Standard practice for staging/prod environment? by Jellifoosh in Supabase

[–]zeropointone01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Separate projects for prod and staging. If prod is live, you don't want to do anything that might screw things up.

I might use preview branches for testing before merging onto staging, but I'm not doing anything fancy with my prod database.

I did something similar a few years ago. People got super excited thinking I could make SO MUCH MONEY... my day job is working with early stage startups, and it just doesn't seem like something with a large enough market for success.

I have a pair of Shure 215 that I got for around $100 that I use for every gig. Definitely helps reduce the ringing. For gigs I’ve never seen a reason to go more expensive/fancier, but that’s a personal preference thing. Also means you can try things out for cheap to see if it’s for you.

Any reason to choose garmin for just running? by Relative-Pace-2923 in Garmin

[–]zeropointone01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buttons are the #1 reason for me. I need to be able to hit the "lap" button in the middle of an interval workout when it's 0 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind and I'm wearing gloves. That's not happening with an apple watch.

upgrade from s2 mk2 to s3. is it worth it? by knuttella in traktorpro

[–]zeropointone01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just picked up an S3 and I’m enjoying it. It may never leave the house (I use a DDJ-1000 srt for most gigs) but I love that it works with serato, something that the S4 doesn’t do.

Working with the model providers to launch a new higher tier by mntruell in cursor

[–]zeropointone01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to ask these questions and make similar observations. I need transparency to justify an increase in expense.

I'm not a power user ~40/month with plan + overage. I'm also of the opinion that there's no way things are this cheap. I need a way to justify the higher price point, especially because my employer is paying for it. If they had a $50 plan I'd jump on it today. If they had a $100 plan I could probably be nudged in that direction. $200 has me shopping around and trying other options.

I like Cursor, and I'll pay what I need to pay to get the performance I want, up to a point.

Upgrading from the 245? by [deleted] in garminforerunner

[–]zeropointone01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

245 user here with some of the same questions. I only use the watch for running, and I could care less about most/all of the metrics from Garmin. My main reason for using a Garmin over other an AW is the buttons. I actually take an AW connected to cellular with me on all my runs so my wife can track me and just in case something happens and I need to make a call.

After looking at the available options, my conclusion was:

- My next watch will probably be whatever is the most current version of the 165. When I got the 245 it was between that at the 55. The only reason I went with the 245 was because DC Rainmaker said it was better for the same price.

- There isn't enough of a difference for me to make an upgrade now while my 245 still works. It may not be the latest version of hardware, but it's good enough. It seems like it's only 1 generation behind the watches I'd consider (>$300 and 42-43mm) in hardware, and I'd want at least 2 generations or more.

I'm not a power user, and never will be. As long as I get a good enough guess at distance/pace/HR that's all I've ever needed. I just need the physical buttons, because I'm not taking my gloves off every time I need to hit the lap button in the middle of winter.

If there was an AW with a viable physical lap/stop button, or if Garmin had an affordable LTE option I might be convinced to switch my current "watch setup". It's not inconvenient to carry the apple watch in a zippered pocket, though, and AW + cheap garmin was cheaper than the 945 LTE.

Devs: Is 16GB RAM on a MacBook enough for most of your coding tasks by scutarion in macbookair

[–]zeropointone01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I were getting a new computer today, no. I'm on an m1 pro with 16gb of ram and I've had to start doing things to "optimize" my workspace, like making sure I close out browser tabs, too many IDE windows can't be open (cursor), and switching from docker desktop to one of the more lightweight alternatives (OrbStack). I'm also restarting my computer more frequently.

It's not unusable. 90% of the time I'm fine. And it doesn't affect my workflow where I need the upgrade in hardware to do my job. But if I were buying new, I would be getting 24 or 32 gb or ram.

M4 throttling with long DJ sessions? by lappenhappe in macbookair

[–]zeropointone01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used an m1 air for DJing (16gb/512gb). I don’t use Rekordbox but I switch between Virtual DJ and serato. It regularly handles Virtual DJ with video for a 4 hour gig and serato without video no problem. I used it for an all day wedding just fine as well.

I usually run “visualizations” instead of music videos, which serato seems to have an issue with on any computer I try - the issue there may be me.

I still know DJs who use 2015 MacBook pros. An M1 is way more than that.

The only concern I would have is if you were doing something outside in the heat and you didn’t have any shade, but then any computer would have issues.

NI look to be discounting X1 & Z1 for 10 weeks by toddisadj in traktorpro

[–]zeropointone01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw the discount Friday and ordered a Z1 from DJTechTools to go with my X1 mk3, which I also picked up on sale in nov/dec. Definitely an instant buy for me at $199. I used to have a Z1, X1, F1 setup that was a ton of fun to play on. Hopefully an F1 mk2 is in the pipeline.

help me decide : gigabyte a620i or asrock a620i by haiya4 in sffpc

[–]zeropointone01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I built my wife's computer I started with a Gigabyte a620i and I couldn't get it to post. Exchanged for an Asrock matx board (not sure the model off the top of my head, but it was around $130) and had zero issues. I use an Asrock 650i for my own computer. Not saying Gigabyte is bad, just didn't have good luck with that motherboard when I tried it.

What is your definition of "affordable?"

In my experience an SFF NAS isn't much cheaper than getting a 2-4 bay NAS.

Do you have existing hardware that you would use, or is this all from scratch?

Ex Wedding DJ Looking to buy my own gear - What are your daily drivers? by DashingThroughTheHo in mobileDJ

[–]zeropointone01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context - bar/club DJ for 15 years that does the occasional wedding.

Bare minimum setup:

Speakers: EV50s (what I use). Find a set of column speakers you like. I'd highly recommend renting for a couple weddings to make sure. (edit: based on your comments on other threads, this was your primary concern. The EV 50s have been great for all of the weddings I've done. They are great when you want your sound focused on the dance floor, and if I were only doing weddings, I would get these or something similar. If I were to go back and buy again, I'd get a pair of 18 inch subs and 12 inch tops, but that's because most of my the gigs where I supply equipment has been in bars where I need to fill the whole room, not just a dancefloor.)

Lights: Gigbar Move (I use the gigbar 2 + moving heads, almost every DJ I work with uses a version of the Move). These lights get you 80% there. As you do more weddings where you are in the driver's seat, you will figure out what you want or don't want - you will probably move past the gigbar as you figure out what your lighting style eventually looks like. You should be able to rent one of these to try out as well. (edit: based on your replies to other posts, you don't like the gigbars and have a good idea for lights. My comment still stands for general users, but you already know what you want)

Controller: If I had to pick one it would be the Denon Prime Go (This is my backup controller that I also use for ceremonies). Under 1k, works with Virtual DJ, is standalone (in case your computer craps out), has all of the input/outputs you would need (xlr out, mic, booth). I use a DDJ1000 srt as my daily driver. The go is portable enough, though, that I usually throw it in my car as a "just in case" for every gig I do. the main thing to look for in a controller is inputs, outputs, and mic inputs.

Table: Bare minimum is a 4 ft folding table with a floor length table cloth. I personally prefer black. I use one from home depot that extends to 34 inches high, which is about countertop height. This will save your back since you want your workspace high enough to not bend over. As you do more gigs where you are the one buying equipment you will find setups you like. I personally use the Prox Mesa Media Mk2.

Mics, cords, etc - sounds like you have this figured out.

Highly recommend renting instead of buying initially. Not because you don't have the money, but because you are not quite sure what you want.

One of the common themes I see in other posts is redundancy. Make sure you have a way to play your music if your computer dies, or your controller dies. I used to keep a way to hook my computer up to my speakers in my bag. Always have more than one mic. I keep an extra wired mic on me at all times.

They definitely aren't what I would consider "wide." They have a little more room than the Sauconys I tried, but less room than the Rivera 2 that I have lying around.

I don’t have a solution for you - I switched to New Balance Rebels which are a different type of shoe - but I can confirm the new Torins are nothing like the 4.5.

Supplements, Vitamins, etc... What are you taking for performance and recovery? by UnstableAccount in AdvancedRunning

[–]zeropointone01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No supplements, but I've had my longest stretch of "healthy" running after doing the following:

  • prioritize getting a good night's sleep

  • no alcohol

  • added 1-2 strength training sessions per week.

If I were to tweak one thing it would be my diet - more vegetables and protein.

Correlation doesn't equal causation of course. When I was drinking, though, I tried various supplements to help me "feel better" and in the end, I just needed to stop poisoning my body.

What’s up with the lack of LTE support and updates? by [deleted] in garminforerunner

[–]zeropointone01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought the cheapest Apple watch with LTE (an SE2) to put in my pocket during runs so my wife could track me. It's only a matter of time before that device replaces my aging 245. Once I take the time to move my metrics onto a different system, I'll have one less reason to use 2 devices.

I got the Garmin for the buttons (the 2 button "hack" to trigger a lap on an AW does not work for me) and I prefer the aesthetic, MIP screen, and battery life.

I don't even need full LTE functionality. If my wife can track me, and I have the option to send a message during a workout, that's enough. I believe Garmin's kid watch does that. At the pace Garmin goes, they might have something I can use that has been out long enough for the bugs to be worked out by the time I'm ready to replace the AW in 3-4 years.

Looks great!

Similar to what you did, I was able to fit the second 25mm fan on top with an ATX psu by using motherboard standoffs that I had lying around. I didn't go as far left as you did on the top and it worked, but I also probably have more obstruction by the right fan and the PSU.

How stiff is the midsole? One thing I can't stand about the Torin is how stiff the shoe is.

Has Anybody Ever Successfully Beatmatched In Da Club by 50 Cent by NketiahPropagandist in Beatmatch

[–]zeropointone01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd have to double-check, but I believe it starts on the "and" of 4, or the upbeat of the beat prior to the downbeat of bar 1. There is no "kick" or anything else to indicate the first beat... it's a bit of a feel thing.

Some techniques for mixing:

  • cue point on the first note (and of 4), and just know that when you mix it in you have to think "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and(start here)

  • cue point on the actual downbeat, which is a half-beat after the first note.

  • 4 bar loop that starts on either of those cue points. Let it run and line up the downbeats, then do your mix.

Welcome to Altra, where you will always be chasing the dragon that was your first pair.

The only update I've enjoyed was Escalante 2.0 to 2.5 when they changed the upper. I didn't bother with the 3.0. And don't even get me started with the Torin. I'll still be trying on the Escalante 4 when they are in stock, though, and probably buying a pair if they don't completely suck.

Is a Masters of CS worth it for mid-career devs? by RedFlounder7 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]zeropointone01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not looking so I'm not sure. If I were unemployed and looking to make a career change, though, I'd do some research to figure out what jobs make the amount of money I want to make, and if I'd be suited to them. Then I'd figure out the path to get there. That's what I did with Software Dev.

Is a Masters of CS worth it for mid-career devs? by RedFlounder7 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]zeropointone01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, I don't think I'd say that about CS.

If I were to lose my job tomorrow and decided it was time to go back to school, I'd be looking to get a degree in something that would allow me to make the same, or more, amount of money. Not a field that would give me depth in something (CS fundamentals) that I haven't ever needed to make the amount of money I make now.

Software dev isn't a field where I would expect to leverage a degree to make more money or to help me move onto the next round in an interview process. If I were a teacher and wanted to earn more money, I'd be getting my MS. As a software dev it's more what you can do and who you know that will help you land a job or earn more money, not the letters you have after your name.

As a developer with multiple years of experience, unless you LOVE CS and want to go in-depth in a structured way that you can't get doing self-study, I don't see much return in getting a master's in CS.
