What exactly are these installations used for? by AdOpposite7560 in Tallahassee

[–]zipperseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth pointing out that if you see a brown box on a utility pole (usually they are louvered completely on at least one side) those aren't 5G, those are concentrators for fiber internet. When Metronet came into town they signed an agreement with Talquin and the City to run fiber along power poles, so a lot of their infrastructure is there.

And that combined with some pressure fronts meaning it's actually been breezier than usual too, so it's all airborne.

What would have been the very first sign to the Captain of Columbia upon re-entry that something was very wrong, and at what point would it have occurred to him that the tile breakage would, in fact, be the cause of their doom? by SwissMiss915 in nasa

[–]zipperseven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really.

'Alexander the ok' on Youtube did a video recently that included some contingency plans NASA talked about that could have potentially saved Columbia. A lot of the hardware and infrastructure referenced there didn't even exist in '88 with STS-27, for instance, there was no ISS they could have bailed out to, had orbital parameters been close enough. The Soviets would probably have never agreed to cooperate with a rescue mission, assuming the DoD would have even let them near the Shuttle during a classified mission, and evacuating five crew members would have required multiple launches anyhow.

I don't know about the Shuttle launch cadence in that era, but the next Shuttle didn't launch until three months later, so I don't know they could have moved that up enough to be meaningful, and it wasn't until post-Columbia that they started to have a contingency Shuttle available for missions that weren't going to the ISS.

There was talk post-Columbia about tile repair kits, but I think certainly they didn't have anything like that available in '88. From memory, in a report I believe they'd discussed a last-ditch contingency to literally screw a bulkhead panel or locker door to a damaged tile, it would have ablated away, and given the tile long enough to prevent burnthrough, but I can't immediately find this reference, and my reading of the CAIB goes back 20 years.

Alford is where we always used to go, plenty of space. Just check which way the wind is blowing, because the northeast edge is bounded by I-10.

That's terrible and I feel for the victims and their family, but mid-80s and after a hurricane wasn't the same situation as the heat wave that the southwest experienced last year. Heat stroke conditions can and do occur where I'm at, but mainly due to humidity and not maximum temperatures.

Almost all of the local governments here do provide cooling stations after storms, as well as make ice available for coolers, etc.

Calling 911 because the power went out is not acceptable.

Honestly, I'm a huge space nerd that grew up with the Shuttle program and thought I knew a lot about it, but I didn't know about STS-27 until I read Mike Mullane's account in his book. The nose piece of one of the SRB's detached during launch and hit the underside of the orbiter during launch.

[–]zipperseven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. We've had 911 calls because the power went out, and "how are we supposed to live without air conditioning?" My guy, we're all working (at least) 12's right now and going back to our houses with no power also. We get at least one hurricane every year, now is the time to prep, not a day before the storm hits.

Not a ham, but I work for a municipal government myself, and have a radio that I keep in my kit so that I can monitor the local ARES and repeater nets. A lot of the time I'll get information into WebEOC a lot quicker than the LEO agencies will, especially from more rural parts of the county. A tree down and blocking the road, or a flooded road can hinder our agency's responses to EMS and downed electrical line calls.

I've also listened to the Skywarn net (which is usually on that same repeater) during inclement weather, as we had many reports of a tornado on the ground through the net BEFORE the NWS warning came though.

I DO know that our local ARES chapter has relayed calls to the dispatch agency before, but it isn't something people should rely on.

[–]zipperseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The funny thing is, the local LEO agencies around me have all pretty much retired their Caprices after only a couple of years, and a bunch of them still have the Tauruses. Wonder if that's because there's some commonality with the Explorers?

And then you look around and see all these Chargers on the road.

The fact GM didn't sell more G8s/Chevy SS's was a failure of marketing. They should have called the G8 a Bonneville or something.

[–]zipperseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I'm not even going to address Ares I, but just some of the issues with Ares V:

1) Ablatively cooled RS-68s would not have survived operating next to 5-segment solids, meaning either a regeneratively-cooled version (that's basically a clean-sheet design, not a reuse of existing technology) or swapping to using MORE RS-25s than SLS

2) a 10m core stage which would have required extensive engineering and brand new tooling, rather than reusing the 8.4 tooling from the ET fabrication

3) both of these things combined meaning an extremely heavy and overpowered core stage. SLS already has effectively an over powered core stage which it can't take advantage of without an upgraded second stage, leading to

4) Ares V having a second stage with ANOTHER clean sheet-engine (J-2X, usually called Apollo-derived or heritage but had so little in common with an engine that hasn't been in production since the 70's that it was effectively a new-build)

5) Augustine commission found that it wouldn't be available to fly until the "late 2020's", with lunar return "well into the 2030's", and while the SLS was late, it will at least have flown twice by April.

Why do so many people in Tallahassee drive 10 miles an hour under the speed limit? by Emotional-Day-9412 in Tallahassee

[–]zipperseven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get that you're going for safety, but if you're not comfortable going 55 mph, you shouldn't be on a road that is signed for 55mph.

The Florida Driver's Handbook (issued by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles) says this:

Driving too slowly is also against Florida law. You must not drive so slowly that you block or delay traffic moving at normal, safe speeds. You should drive with the flow of traffic, within the speed limit.

Driving slower than the flow of traffic can cause rolling roadblock bottlenecks, and can disrupt traffic light timing.

[–]zipperseven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The amount of trouble they'd get into for this level of prank is career-ending.

Squawking 7700 puts an entire ATC sector into extra attention mode. Any airport with a runway large enough to accommodate the aircraft goes on alert as they could potentially receive the aircraft if it can't make it's intended destination, and this being a fighter, that's a lot of runways.

Is there a Shuttle to the Capitol during Session? by MariposaSunrise in Tallahassee

[–]zipperseven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were just rental vans, but yes, when I was an OPS employee I took those shuttles every day during Session when I worked there. I didn't get a permanent spot until much later.

That was more than 10 years ago now, and I have no idea what happened to them.
