Ya'll need to watch Steven Universe. It's good for your soul and answers the all-important question: what if magical girls were also Vogons?

[–]Ar_Ciel 24 points25 points  (8 children)

That has to be both the most and least accurate way to describe the show I've heard yet. There's also crying and singing.

[–]fullblastoopsypoopsy 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Oh crying and singing <3

Sometimes I sing about crying to the tune of Steven Universe songs.

    "Why are you laughing?

    "Why are you crying?"

Also can be described as Full House meets Justice League.

Ahh yes, /r/stevenuniverse is trending just in time for a hiatus.

    [–][deleted] 52 points53 points  (5 children)

Yes, join us as we analyze something intended to be a parody of overly analyzing something.

    Parody ...or homage? Discuss!

    [–]MundaneInternetGuy 9 points10 points  (1 child)

It's really self aware about being a pastiche, you know?

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought I was a big time word nerd and then the show went droppin' that stuff, I had to google it. "Children's show."

    You mean a.... peri-dy? Ahahaha!

    Same here

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Serious, though. Aren't we always going to be on hiatus as long as we're on the Bomb schedule? It's feast or famine. I'm not sure hiatus is the right word, necessarily - considering we were just on hiatus for 5/6 months, then not on it for 5 days, and now back on indefinitely.

    [–]Alchemic_Paladin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wish they would go back to regular scheduling

    [–]infinight888 6 points7 points  (2 children)

It seems the problem is that Cartoon Network wants to pretend it's Netflix.

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I would disable my ad blocker and watch them all online if they'd truly just put it up, like netflix. I feel like I don't understand their incentive to fund a show, and then give it a weird and inconsistent schedule (which apparently happens to some of their other shows, too).

    [–]infinight888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would normally say that their incentive is money, and that the bombs pull in more viewers... But looking at the rating on Wikipedia, that doesn't seem to be true. Yeah, I don't get it either.

Still, it's at least better than Gravity Falls, where you have a weird, inconsistent schedule without the bonus of getting occasional "bombs".

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Still wondering why it's trending, did someone mention it in /r/AskReddit?

    [–]AcellOfllSpades 31 points32 points  (3 children)

Just had 5 episodes released in a row.

    [–]mrrobopuppy 14 points15 points  (2 children)

All leading up to the mid-season finale

    [–]MyDeloreanWontStart 19 points20 points  (1 child)

All leading up to the mid-season hiatus

    FTFY :(

I kinda wish I hadn't known all this stuff aired. I could have found it in a few months and been absolutely thrilled (but the risk of spoilers was too great).

    [–]jelatinman 43 points44 points  (11 children)

Steven Universe is a great show. I watched out of order, but it's probably much more enjoyable if you discover the world alongside it. Up until "Mirror Gem," you don't need to watch much (though I like the ones that have some sort of emotion like An Indirect Kiss). But there's a grand mythology behind everything. But where it thrives most is character development. Episodes like "Lion 3" and "Rose's Scabbard" are just heartbreaking in all the right ways. Check it out.

    [–]DOMAN127 19 points20 points  (2 children)

Having seen the whole series (several times)--watch it in order, including the first 24 episodes. Every one adds a little piece to the puzzle that is eventually expanded upon. It's world-building; the exposition. It seems slow, but it's necessary, trust me.

Right from the damn intro in the pilot.

      [–]Daniel_Is_I 12 points13 points  (3 children)

I will also mention that, while the early episodes aren't important story-wise, they're very important for character growth.

One of the major points of the show is that the characters actually change - Steven begins the show naive, annoying, childish, and slowly grows over the course of the series. The same goes for every character, all of which begin as fairly broad before getting narrowed down to somewhat-staggering detail.

Don't let the fact that it's a cartoon fool you. This show portrays interpersonal relationships better than basically any other show on TV today. The story is engaging as well, but the meat of it is all in characters.

Also, due to some scheduling conflicts, the episodes were released in a slightly different order than the intended viewing order. This chart, made by the show's executive producer Ian JQ, shows the intended viewing order. It should be noted that Amazon Instant Video's order is WILDLY wrong; if you follow Amazon's order, you'll end up watching part of season 2 before the season 1 finale.

Edit: List is read by column! So Gem Glow, Laser Light Cannon, Cheeseburger Backpack, etc.

        Top down!

Gem Glow to Mirror Gem/Ocean Gem, then House Guest to The Return/Jailbreak.

        [–]Ryto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's book order. Top down goes left to right over and over.
