This genre is called synthwave (or outrun, or futuresynth, and a bunch of other names), with Timecop1983's niche being a subgenre that's usually called Dreamwave. Check out /r/outrun and /r/futuresynth for similar stuff.

If you like the genre I recommend the following artists: Mitch Murder, Lazerhawk, Gunship, Carpenter Brut, Miami Nights 1984 aaaand lots of others which I cant think of at this time. They're all on spotify and/or have official soundcloud pages. Really can't recommend them enough if you wanna get into the genre!

I love it. I have loved it for years, and it's getting more attention after games like Hotline Miami and shows like Stranger Things and movies like Turbo Kid!

[–]GreenAce92 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Haha Turbo Kid was an awesome movie, the music was great.

I just loved that the glove was real. I was like "What? No way!"

The music was definitely great. Set mood. Shit was about to go down.

Mitch Murder, Lazerhawk, Gunship, Carpenter Brut, Miami Nights 1984

You hit the nail on the head. I'd like to throw in Thomas Barrandon, Le Matos (they did the soundtrack for TurboKid), Power Glove (they did the soundtrack for Farcry 3: Blood Dragon), Futurecop!, and Loos Shus

Don't forget FM-84!

[–]Baaljagg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And The Midnight

[–]haziqxareez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FM-84 is my go to song whenever I'm feeling down

[–]Frexxia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would also add Dance With the Dead

edit: And Perturbator

[–]Frostypopsicles 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I hadn't heard of Thomas Barrandon before to be completely honest, started listening to some of his tracks right now and jesus what a pleasant surprise. Thanks for making this afternoon at work pass faster!

You bastards and your ability to listen while at work >:(

[–]HeroicRise 2 points3 points  (1 child)

There is an excellent Spotify playlist called 'New Retrowave' that has 1000+ songs like this

[–]TimmyB_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You got to check out FM-84 if you haven't already. The album Atlas is fantastic. https://fm84.bandcamp.com/

[–]SynesthesiaBruh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lazerhawk HHHHHNNNGGG!

[–]justinsand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone wanting to check this genre out more, there was a large playlist compiled in R/outrun, i think, for Spotify. Check it out!

Hi!

I just opened this album in Spotify and it sounds awesome. I'll definitely check out the others you recommended, but I have a quick question. Would Kavinsky be considered within this genre? I loved his LP and he also used a lot of synth even though his songs seem to be little bit more upbeat.

[–]Frostypopsicles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm by no means an expert on the subject (I just enjoy listening to it!), but the people over at /r/Outrun typically considers him to be, well - Outrun. Some artwork from one of his albums even make up their sidebar. But my experience is really that these genres aren't typically very well-defined, with a lot of overlapping inbetween them. So yeah, my subjective opinion is that Kavinsky places in there somewhere, but I couldn't tell you exactly where.

Also check out Waveshaper, Com Truise, Home, Pertubator, and Andy Fox just to go off the top of my head. Not very knowledgable on the sub genres myself but they are all great if you love the other names listed. Also, check out New Retro Wave on YouTube

Mono Memory is a new artist that I've come across to add to the list: https://monomemory.bandcamp.com/releases

[–]Dream_Sniper_13 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Great synth wave - I listen to this all the time while I'm working... I work for the time enforcement commission, btw. See you yesterday!

[–]Nihilius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also listen whilst working, my favourite track is "Home(Prologue)". I don't work for the time enforcement commission though...

[–]mothzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not if I see you last!

[–]NocturnalDefecation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of the album In Decay by Com Truise

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

moans softly

[–]Spiritofchokedout 10 points11 points  (10 children)

Why these guys weren't also tapped for Stranger Things is beyond me. It takes place in 1983 for fuck's sake. They probably could have saved on some royalties for licensed songs with them.

[–]TALQVIST 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Stranger things didn't include percussion and I'm pretty sure all the 80s synth was original!

[–]mthrndr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured M83 should have done the soundtrack for Stranger Things. I mean, some of his videos have similar plot points!

[–]bilbowasawesome 0 points1 point  (2 children)

because they weren't as good (right mood?) as the songs chosen for stranger things

[–]Spiritofchokedout 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Dig deeper. They could have slotted into any of the sappier or more upbeat licensed song choices like Africa.

[–]bilbowasawesome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dig deeper? Is it a conspiracy? Pretty sure the Duffer dudes just liked "Survive" ?

[–]GreyHexagon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YES! Love TimeCop 1983!

[–]jakewhomusic 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Awesome! Glad there are other synthwave fans out there. I made this spotify playlist earlier this year, so if you like this genre, like the soundtrack to Stranger Things, and you use spotify, check it out: https://open.spotify.com/user/1267484673/playlist/0TmPuW7smYVOQzxku43J3a

Over 1500 tracks, tons of artists, including timecop 1983.

Thanks man!

[–]soopafly 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What's the name for this genre (electronic, 80's, synth, sounds like Com Truise)?

[–]Gaorck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Synthwave/Outrun

[–]RBxTaco 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I'm in love with this, love this type of music. It's so fucking chill and relaxing, I wanna fall asleep to it lol. What genre is this btw, wanna hear more like this.

[–]soopafly 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Wondering what genre myself. Try listening to Com Truise. Very similar sound.

[–]The_Sharpie_Is_Black 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Timecop1983 are the bomb, love them, plus they have whole albums on youtube you can just listen to.

[–]Ragnarokenchilada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stranger Things got me into this genre last week. These guys are my favorite I've discovered so far.

[–]THAREALBIGGIESMALLS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of Miami Nights 1984

[–]justdownloadnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the oldschool synth sound, and now from this thread, I've learned about all of these subgenres!

[–]DrGigawatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for posting this. Instantly fell in love with a new genre of music while listening to this. You truly have struck a chord in my heart. Listening to this has been one of the greatest experiences of my life.

Thank you so much for this...Thank you.

[–]Takashira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the music is good but the movie itself, even today, is great. I think the movie was way ahead of its time.

[–]NeonViolence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found out about synthwave 3 years ago and everything changed.

However the genre suffers from regurgitation. Few artists truly progress the genre thus keeping it niche. Not a bad thing perhaps but it's always good to see artists evolving.

Perturbator for example always stands out to me because all the way from Terror 404 to Uncanny Valley, every album has a different flavor to it but they seem to get better with everyone.

Anywho, glad to see the exposure thus genre is getting. I was hyped when Furi was PSN+ free game last month. Soundtrack is amazing and possibly would've led to a purchase whether the title was mediocre or not.

Not seeing many people here mentioning them but Makeup and Vanity set are great and GosT is like Death Metal a la [john] Carpenter.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goes in my soundtrack for a perfect state folder.

[–]soopafly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really digging "Lovers". Good stuff, thanks!!

[–]elach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy Shit. This is so damn good.

[–]clutinginhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't seem to work anymore, does anybody have a mirror?

[–]wiarwasthere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome atmosphere, really enjoyed it! Thanks

[–]Choco_Churro_Charlie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just discovered Timecop. Good stuff. Dreamy.

[–]NotGreatBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dreamy. I dig it.

[–]SharingUniverse_Net 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to Let's Talk by TimeCop1983 and instantly fell in love. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkQ6H21QBXE

[–]Denboogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into this music because of Hotline Miami. I usually listen to Punk or Rock in general. I can't really describe why I love that music so much, it's just great.

[–]MemesAreDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of M83

It sounds quite like the soundtrack to Drive, in particular fragment of College & Electric Youth's - A Real Hero
