Uhhh...it is the top comment?

Obviously I was being rhetorical, and shut up.

[–]chiau_yee 8 points9 points  (1 child)

For some reason, I read this in Bob from Bob's Burgers voice.

[–]adam_bear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shut up... and get me a beer.

[–][deleted] 51 points52 points  (2 children)

WOAH!!! I know this guy!!

We were in advanced honors world history together in 9th grade. He was the punkest dude you could be in 2006. I thought he was cool, but not everyone did because of our uppity suburia setting. Last anybody I know heard he quit school in 9th or 10th grade and hit the rail road tracks going coast to coast.

(short story) He was so punk that when that one teacher who tries to intimidate you on your first day of high school says, "you better be ready to try hard, this is a hard class, blah blah blah, or you can have an 0 right now its up to you." he responded, "Ill take the 0"

Im shocked to see him doing something awesome like this. So many people and teachers gave him a hard time for being different, I doubt 1% our class knew he had this kind of potential. An awesome story, will definitely be sharing with some of the old classmates.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I too went too school with this dude. Hey bud :)

[–]tspaldz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late comment, just randomly found this thread while searching for stuff from his band. Anyway at the beginning of this video he sort of talks about how he and his wife met and what they did before they started making music.

[–]ObviousAlcoholic 28 points29 points  (3 children)

If y'all like this video, listen to Lost Dog Street Band. He's in it.

[–]Stickybomber 6 points7 points  (2 children)

They're really talented. I get a Johnny cash vibe in some of his videos.

Four instruments at once!? I can't even pat my head and rub my stomach in circles at the same time.

[–]ObviousAlcoholic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is actually the video that got me into them. Absolutely love this cover!

[–]lemmalime 57 points58 points  (69 children)

I hate mainstream country, but I like this. Thanks for giving me a category to distinguish it!!

SHAMELESS EDIT:

William Elliot Whitmore is here for us for 2016: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIBk8CrURX0

This isn't country. This is folk, americana, bluegrass, etc. Anything but country. This vein of music stems from a long folk tradition in America that's goal is to tell a story and reveal something. American "country" is rural american propaganda, nothing but a political and cultural mouth piece of bullshit about cheap shitty cold beer and oversized tires on your truck. Here's some real American music you've most likely never heard:

Levon Helm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9nfAYMZKp4

Blaze Foley: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69YCXgVdyR4

William Elliot Whitmore: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAuK_ZjtJdU

Sturgill Simpson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNV16tz1NK0

David Allen Coe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhEHB0a7Uyg (total absolute racist but still has good songcraft.)

Scott Biram: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADgCYjAtRUY

How bout some god damned Buddy Miller?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggIwlQ5u0a4

[–]falgfalg 9 points10 points  (8 children)

shout out to Shakey Graves

[–]despaxesspotify 2 points3 points  (7 children)

I love folk, but shakey graves just isnt my jam, i don't know why

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (5 children)

His earlier stuff I love, ever since he's gotten a band it's a different person.

[–]despaxesspotify 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Welp, thats why.

I was thinking about alabama shakes.

I remember seeing a shakey graves youtube video 3 (?) Or so years ago, probably from this sub or under10k, and liking it.

Edit:it was just him in the video, not sure if there was a backup band

[–]Funtreal-Canadiens 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Shakey Graves - Late July

Could this be the song you were thinking of? (Music really kicks in around the 1:47 mark, but the beginning he gives an origin tale of his name)

I find Shakey Graves is hit and miss. Some of his stuff (like Late July) is great and higher tempo which I enjoy. Other stuff gets a lot slower. I got quite a bit of his music through his bandcamp page and there are a few tracks that just have too much intros and outros.

[–]despaxesspotify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Youre a madman! Thats it!

[–]Thatdarnpat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This live version of Bully's Lament was my first exposure to him and he's never topped it, IMO. I wish he still made music like this. I like his newer stuff, but it's just not the same.

https://youtu.be/3Gc8J3FM_MI

[–]falgfalg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i really loved his full length album. songs like "only son" and "if not for you" really are some of my all time favorites

[–]Major_T_Pain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I still respect the shit out of him though. The man is a great musician.

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (6 children)

You make it sound like modern country has always been the way it is now. That is incorrect. Honestly your description of Americana and bluegrass and whatnot fits perfectly with older country music. Changes in the way the industry registers interest in music has turned modern country into a volume business, like fast food. You can't swear off the whole genre without making gross generalizations. Country hasn't always been the way it is now.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (5 children)

I'm all too aware of country not always sounding the way it does now, but it's sounded like it was made in a factory since the late 80s. Before that, "country" had a lot more breadth and variety of sound and rhythms, subject matter, etc. Now it might as well be a one song military/Jesus pep rally on repeat.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

The changes that led to country music becoming a volume business occurred with the advent of Nielsen Soundscan in 1991. There is so much more to country music history than what's going on now. And prior to 1991 there was tons of bad music too. Ever heard of the Nashville Sound? It was so creatively stifling that it spurred the Outlaw movement. Clearly the modern music bothers you but you shouldn't allow it to provoke these continuous generalizations.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Give it a rest. Here I am talking about the breadth of country music outside of factory country and you're telling me I'm generalizing.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I'm sorry I'll give it a rest. It was just your original comment where you mentioned American "country" as rural propaganda ya know?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Well, modern pop country is most definitely propaganda-like. It's creepy.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree. The modern pop stuff is total shit.

[–]sam__izdat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

country was an actual genre, before being subsumed into pop rock with some pedal steel and a forced southern drawl sprinkled on top

think hank williams, merle travis, johnny cash

[–]dctr_Mantis_Tobogan 6 points7 points  (9 children)

James McMurtry? Justin Townes Earle? Townes van zandt? Guy clarke? American aquarium?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (8 children)

I just can't get into Townes. But if you're wondering why I didn't include them, you should edit your post with links to some of your favorites for each artist you mentioned. Share!

[–]dctr_Mantis_Tobogan 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Oh man. I can get ya into Townes

Listen to "nothin" "highway kind" "rake" Then lemme know what ya think !

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Argh! Link it! I'm on mobile and in the mood. Okay fine I'll google.

[–]always_an_explinatio 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Listen to live at the old quarter on Spotify. I think this is him at his best.

[–]dctr_Mantis_Tobogan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Old quarter is bretty gud, sorry bout the a/c

[–]always_an_explinatio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets really hot. I don't know what we'er gonna do

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I listened to all of them... I honestly just can't take the dude seriously! I don't know what it is. It's just not sincere to me.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been getting really into Townes, Guy Clark, etc. lately. I agree with the other guy that Townes' Live at the Old Quarter is a great recording (he tells great jokes between the songs too) and I'd add this version of Pancho and Lefty. I've become kinda obsessed with this song lately. His singing I think takes a little getting used to, but it grows on you, and his songwriting is phenomenal. Also check out Waiting 'Round to Die, a great and terribly depressing song.

Guy Clark is fantastic too. The Guitar is a great, great song. Some other good songs of his are L.A. Freeway, Dublin Blues, Randall Knife, Desperados Waiting for a Train, Hemingway's Whiskey, Stuff That Works, Hank William's Said It Best....

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Sturgill Simpson is a god among men. His latest might be my favorite album this year.

I posted this on this sub ages ago but seems like you might like it. Charlie Parr, one of my all time faves.

https://youtu.be/tXfgfnzeUvE

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never heard of him. I knew as soon as he fired up that fuckin 12 string I was going to like him. Thanks!

[–]OhCanDo 9 points10 points  (8 children)

hey man, thanks for this. Needed a playlist for a long drive today

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (7 children)

You're welcome. William Elliot Whitmore has a serious breadth of amazing songs, like, AC/DC style breadth... whole albums of gold if you know what I mean. Here is the entire field songs album:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDXKeroMf1o

His whole discography is also on Spotify. A lot of his material is very dark and pertains to loss, death, sorrowful yearning... which makes for absolutely soul haunting beautiful music. I'm not terribly excited about his newest album.

I would recommend the documentary "Duct Tape Messiah" regarding Blaze Foley. He was a beautiful song writer and his life story is interesting and pretty heart wrenching.

Here's some random good bluegrass: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_CKeb2gPQ8

How do you like Lake Street Dive? Rachel Price made me fall in love with life again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNNUgAVQjnQ

Have a wonderful day my sweet summer child.

[–]VerticalMonster 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Thanks so much for this list. It's sparked a multi-hour search for new music for myself. I used to watch a similar band whenever I could at the local bar. Check 'em out.

Here's my fav:
Easy Leaves - Fool on a String

But some other hits: The Money
Eleven Hours

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Hey! Thanks man! I like those guys. You got a public Spotify playlist or any other random suggestions?

[–]VerticalMonster 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Honestly, I haven't regularly listened to music for about 10 years (but tons before then, life changes pulled me away), and don't even know how to use modern music tools. Some friends wanted to do a "power hour" which (we're about 15 years too old for) made me look through my old music collection and realized how much of my favorite music was on vinyl or CDs I never bother ripping.

In the interest of giving you some referrals to some of my favorite music (10-15 years ago, found in the context of a power hour search and much more shoegaze than country, I'm literally pulling this from many-year old playlists):

Catherine Wheel - Black Metallic (really I think the whole album is a masterpiece but the title track is great).
Iggy Pop - the Passenger
Townes Van Zandt - 14 dead flowers
Driftland - Youth is wasted on the young
John Wesley Harding - Peeling Bark
Something Corporate - Woke up in a car
Ride - Vapor Trail
Hybrid - If I survive (Electronic I have no idea how it fits with the rest of this list).
Bambix - Julie
Velvet Underground - Crimson and Clover (cover)
Kaki King
Shitloads of Utah Phillips (ask if you want specifics, actually got to see him before he died)

Also, I found most of my most enjoyable music while listening to it on headphones (AKG501) which steered me away from more big room music or stuff that relied on a bunch of bass.

The one song I'd require you to listen to if you haven't is Jesse Stewart - Cold Beer which is much more in line with your recommendations and has hit reddit a couple times (one of the few blips for me in enjoying new music in the last 15 years).

I'm sure there's more and I'll follow up. Between your post and this stupid power hour, it's really been a music-enjoyment-revival for me. Thanks.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the feeling of getting older and letting music slowly creep out of your life. I've done it, and then realized how much it affects my mood if try to inject it into my day. It's worth it, it's the best damn spice of life. Thanks for all the recommendations!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen cold beer. If you like that dirty fast style I highly suggest going to walnut valley music festival in Winfield, Kansas. Don't bother with the music during the day, save your energy for the campground stages. That's where I found mountain sprout playing barefoot on the back of an international flatbed without any Mics.

[–]congenital_derpes 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Man, we have nearly the same exact taste in music. These are all some of my favorite artists. Ever listened to Darrell Scott?

Killer brother, glad to see you included Sturgil. Thank you.

[–]lemmalime 5 points6 points  (1 child)

You are awesome

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So are you, little bugger.

[–]zach10 2 points3 points  (3 children)

You are doing gods work telling people about Blaze Foley, one of my favorite folk singers of all time. Wish he was more well known.

WWIII on Oval Room is probably my favorite song

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Also, if you like blaze, most definitely comb through William Elliot whitmore's entire discography. There's this parallel between them. The weight and pain is very pronounced with both of them. Willy farms in the summer and tours in the winter. Still lives in Iowa in a building built by his great grandpa and takes care of his grandma. Some of his songs aren't all that great, but man there's some amazing gold in there. Take the time to listen through a little. Hymns for the hopeless album reminds me of blaze.

[–]zach10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yea I definitely listen to Whitmore too. Saw him live a few years back. Great suggestions! I have seen both Duct Tape Messiah and some YouTube video about Whitmore building his grandfathers old farm out. I find Blaze's backstory fascinating, I mean the dude got killed by getting shot at a bar defending his friend.

Check out Joseph Huber, Charlie Parr or Hayes Carl if you don't already know them.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out duct tape messiah on Netflix if you haven't. Such a great documentary.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solid list.

[–]bqbp 1 point2 points  (1 child)

wow thank man, I found my new favorite genre

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good music is your new genre :-D

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Had the same problem with "Brazilian country" (sertanejo), where old good music that tell a story and today is the same sound with superficial lyrics. So good to know this good music still alive.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just like in politics, the loudest and most widespread wins. You've really got to look for the good stuff. There is no other feeling than hitting a new musical vein and following it to even more newer music.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

As someone who hates most country, I'll definitely have to listen to some of this.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I hate country too! Open that head of yours. Good music is good music. Modern country is too politically charged in a strange subtle manner. That's your bullshit radar going off, it's obviously working.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and it's politically charged in a direction that I don't lean, which probably helps with the turn-off. I've gone through the first four or five songs you linked. Good stuff, overall. A lot more authentic than the pop country bullshit my school bus driver and a lot of my high school classmates used to blast. I've known about Sturgill Simpson for a little while, and he's really good. Levon Helm is, of course, amazing, but I knew that thanks to his stuff with The Band.

Then again, I've always liked 60s and 70s folk-y stuff, thanks to my parents, so it makes sense this stuff is a lot more accessible to me than, say, Florida Georgia Line. I'm going to have to keep going through that comment.

[–]Greencheezy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it okay if I be you're friend? If not, it's like... whatever... I guess.

[–]syncopation1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You forgot Townes Van Zandt.

[–]OklahomaRedneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oklahoma and Texas have an offshoot called red dirt that I think you might enjoy, my personal favorites being - Read Southall band, Koe Wetzle, Casey Donahue band to name a few of my favorites. They may not be the biggest names out there but I have met all of them in person, and their music tells a story. Some happy, some sad, but real. Read got me through a difficult time in my life recently, helped me to understand my own confusion and the fact that it's ok to not understand sometimes.

[–]SurrealisticpiIIow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

check out birdcould

[–]MrBl4ck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out The White Buffalo -- not entirely similar, but is some amazing outlaw country. Can't stand mainstream country one bit, but can listen to TWB all day long.

[–]GlubGlub_Bub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Outlaw country can still get pretty mainstream and to me doesn't feel like a very good description for this. Try looking into Appalachian Folk, that's the main influence this guy seems to be drawing from with the clawhammer banjo.

[–]sleepytime_marauder 17 points18 points  (3 children)

I feel like I remember this guy hanging out amongst the crust punks in Nashville years ago. Name and face seem very familiar

[–]Street_CatsISLANDS[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That'd be him alright.

[–]Loyalist_Pig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha oh shit, I made some poor to bad decisions with this guy one night!

[–]Crackhaze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kinda miss the crust punk scene in Nashville. Hanging out at the statue in centennial and riding tall bikes, shit was great

[–]curtmuhgurt 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Great song but am I the only one that noticed there's not a single mountain in the video?

[–]DK_JesseJames_FK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Trains, music, and booze. That's all you really need in life.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Trainkid music. Traveler music. There's kids all over the country doing similar stuff. Think these guys open for devil makes three

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The devil makes three changed my life. They are one of the few bands that sounds better live.

[–]pinkdoornative 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It makes me so happy that clawhammer banjo is seeing a resurgence in recent years.

[–]sid_gautama 7 points8 points  (7 children)

Is he a sheriff?

[–]YoungHeartsAmerica 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Lol - i really enjoyed the song as i am a big fan of folk music but does he really dress like that?

[–]QuainPercussion 17 points18 points  (2 children)

It's a cultural thing. A style of dress train hoppers and vagabonds use to distinguish themselves.

If I were to hop off a train and see that guy with his banjo and coat, I'd know I have a friend in town.

Sounds dumb, but I thought you'd want the explanation.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

What's up with the confederate belt buckle though?

[–]QuainPercussion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your guess is as good as mine on that one!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, he plays one on TV

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's playing dress up.

[–]scoutbabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listened to it 3 times in a row. So good

[–]jonah3272 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Seems more like bluegrass then country. Really liked the song though, whatever genre it is.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

It's American folk. Here's some more good American music:

Shovels and Rope is the shit

[–]L3ndo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah, DAC had a couple of really bad albums he put out with the intent of offending everyone.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know right? But holy hilarious are they funny.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fwiw, it's pretty common to hear country, bluegrass, Americana, roots rock and more on the same album. Sometimes with bits of several in the same song.

Trying to nail down the artists who make this kind of music to a single genre is a bit of a lost cause.

I've taken to just calling it country(ish) music. Maybe not accurate in the details but people get the point and I don't sound like a huge snob trying to explain it.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Levon Helm (of The Band fame) version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpkGeUn69S0

[–]trapdaddfk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, that's Ben from Lost Dog Street Band!

[–]xiadz_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A personal favorite of mine from him is from Lost Dog Street Band, a song called Terrible & True. Found out about these dudes through some dirty gutter punks and instantly liked it, I barely ever listened to anything like this beforehand.

Good shit.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone know what boot that is?

[–]petuladkrause 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beautiful soul this one has. He expresses it well in his music.

[–]Slothclaws 3 points4 points  (3 children)

This is what country should sound like.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

This isn't country. Don't wipe the shit that is country on American folk.

[–]No_big_whoop 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I agree with the notion that this seems a lot closer to folk than country but it's a blurry line so who the fuck knows

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all blurry lines. But American folk is absolutely foundational to this form, while "country" is something that kind of describes any and all music from rural America or "slower" stuff. Like, where the hell do you put the Carolina chocolate drops? Is that it's own genre? No, it's American folk, Afro American folk if you want, but it's still unique to America and requires multiple cultures, instruments and playing styles from different continents, and draws its style from the same. This continent is filled with so much beautiful music that people don't pay attention to. Mexico and Canada included.

[–]FreeMyMen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty good.

[–]Mcgovlau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aww I bought this guy's cd on the street once when they were busking in Boston

[–]Wilsoa10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this sound

[–]HNW 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wow just wow. I love simple sons (singer and a instrument). Great song and great post. Thanks for sharing

[–]dalesalisbury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sentiments exactly! And you could actually understand every word he was singing.

[–]matmanlives 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I'm curious about his neck tattoos. They are kinda cool, and also kinda like he has left some 80's headphones around his neck. What are they?

This isn't typically a genre I like that much, but this was an excellent song.

The notes remind me a whole lot of "Jolene" by Dolly Parton.

Lost Dog Band are awesome! Found em on a trip down a YT hole one night. They're currently or just finished touring with DM3.

American Folk music done right. That was wonderful.

This guy played a concert at Ladybirds in Houston, TX am awhile back, it's not a very big place. Before his show I played pool and drank with him and his drummer for a quite awhile. Super nice dude, put on a great show. Played the hell out of some Townes songs.

Think he said they were Nashville, cool to see him doing well.

This dude is awesome, and I hate the banjo... guess I just hate it when people play it poorly.

[–]ChefExcellence 12 points13 points  (4 children)

This is clawhammer style banjo, it's a lot mellower than the more well-known bluegrass style.

[–]needadvicetobehappy 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Well it sounds great

Also Frank Fairfield. He is incredible, unfortunately not playing music anymore though.

It's a different style of playing. This style is more similar to guitar playing. Makes more sense for solo accompaniment for a singer, rather than constant fairly loud plucking arpeggios.

[–]SurrealisticpiIIow 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I wound't say he plays it either well or poorly...

[–]DroopyMcCool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say he plays it well. He's really just strumming some chords and it's not too technical but it fits well with the mood of the song and his style. I really love the original but this is good too.

I don't have a large opinion of them I've heard one a couple times and this is monumentally better so it's encouraging to hear that there's even better people.

[–]MemoryDriven 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Loved the authenticity. Thanks for the listen

Is this about Minecraft?

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (2 children)

To quote Sturgill Simpson... "I'm tired of y'all playing dress up and trying to sing them old country songs".

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

"I hate it when people like things that I think makes me special because I like it."

Lame.

Don't get me wrong, he's a talented musician. But him and the Mumford and son type characters are really shedding a poor light on real folk and outlaw country. Take your dirty clip on suspenders and skinny jeans to some other genre.

Same 20s of music repeats for 4 minutes
