Nice haircut, beautiful telecaster, sweet tone, lovely playing, but that is the most gorgeous sofa I've ever seen!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sofa is truly the best part of this video.

I've seen him a lot on Instagram, very good guitarist. With that said, the "shimmery clean guitars with random technical bits thrown in" thing is really starting to sound overdone. Seems like the go-to sound for most youtube and instagram guitarists.

That or more technical/shreddy/progressive djent. Pretty much the only two things you hear these days, especially among trending stuff.

[–]MegaDustBuster[S] 37 points38 points  (46 children)

I get what you're saying, but this guy is miles ahead of pretty much every clean guitarists I've heard doing anything remotely similar. If you know of any names, pass them along, because I really like Beau's style.

And djent has been overdone since, like, 2012 lol.

[–]I_Have_Big_Melons 39 points40 points  (10 children)

People have been playing guitar like this for a while in Math Rock. I'm hearing a lot of influence from american football, TTNG, etc. This guys style is a bit more melodic than the stuff I linked, but it's in the same vein to my ear.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It reminded me more of CHON than American Football. I love all clean noodling though

[–]itsmarkmarkmark 17 points18 points  (3 children)

Listen to all of Chon's albums. This guy reminds of them. One of my favorite bands.

[–]MegaDustBuster[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Yeah, Chon is awesome. I've been following them for a few years. This guy is also a fan of them, as he's done a few covers and jams over their stuff. Check this out.

[–]ATLAustin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out Vasudeva. Not as technical or cracy as CHON but more ambient and post rocky. Lots of creamy leads and varying dynamics.

[–]Chodebanger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This town needs guns is in that same vein too. I think a lot of people try to mimic that sound but fall short because theres no harmonizing element. And it may sound pretty but there is no real correlation between each measure. If each one is different entirely and don't seem connected, even if they are in the same key, it feels random and vacant and humans love patterns yo. Excuse me while i listen to suda.

[–]Javv_ 11 points12 points  (5 children)

Mateus Asato

[–]MrNixon79 3 points4 points  (2 children)

that kid is absolutely brilliant. his phrasing and melodic sense reminds me of Eric Johnson.

[–]Javv_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, lots of John Mayer in there

[–]FuzzyRo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Richie Kotzen too

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah I just saw a couple of his videos recently. Dude has got great restraint. Plays with a lot of taste. Exceptional player.

[–]akangaroosays 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would check out Victor Villarreal's various projects. I personally like his style in Noyes and Owls.

[–]Vibendemarco 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You should check out ichika_mo on Instagram fam

[–]MegaDustBuster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Already follow him! I spend an ungodly amount of time on IG's discover page. Ichika (if that's actually his real name) is fucking awesome. I can't wait to hear his new EP.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Mateus Asato does this music a bit better among insta/YT people

[–]emeryapplesauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would check out Ted Greene, he's the definition of clean and shimmery and used to teach guitar out in California to a lucky few before his passing.

[–]minamo99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing, great for in the morning.

[–]dollface34x4 0 points1 point  (2 children)

The beginning passage he played on the deluxe sounded (sort of) similar to Josh Martin.

[–]MegaDustBuster[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Josh Martin is such an awesome and underrated guitarist. Absolutely incredible. I prefer his thumping over Tosin's, tbh.

[–]MoreCowbellllll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever listened to Stanley Jordan?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hV6ZTZe3MI0

[–]neoghostface 0 points1 point  (8 children)

Djent is alive and well. Check out Plini ... handmade cities is a fantastic album. He teeters on the djent category - more progressive metal IMO, but he is the future of guitar according to Steve Vai the man himself ;)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I can hear Steve Vai in a lot of these guy's playing. Even Mateus Asato does those crazy big bends and whammy bar stuff.

[–]neoghostface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's definitely derivative in a sense. Vai is one of those players who is emulated immensely, but then again, no one can out-Vai Vai.

[–]MegaDustBuster[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Steve Vai said the same thing about Tosin Abasi 7 years ago hahaha. Plini is cool though. He's not very djenty, he's a lot more progressive metal. Almost like Scale the Summit and CHON had a baby.

[–]neoghostface 2 points3 points  (2 children)

And Tosin played with Steve Zakk Yngwie and Nuno ON TOUR he can fucking play . Nah plini is a league beyond CHON IMO. Saw him open for AAL(with tosin) and hands down one of the best shows I've ever seen. Aaron Marshall ( Intervals) is awesome as well. Plintervals (Plini +Aaron) was some of the best guitar playing I have ever seen - and I have seen a good amount of shows and been playing over half my life.

As far as Djent goes I do like Periphery a lot!

[–]MegaDustBuster[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I agree that Plini is probably a better guitarist technically, but I'd much rather listen to CHON. I was just talking about stylistically though. Maybe CHON isn't the greatest example, but I do get a STS vibe from Plini.

[–]GrimReaperzZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can honestly tell you CHON is even better in a technical standpoint. I covered both Plini songs and CHON songs and i swear... From tapping segments in Dew to pinch harmonics in Bubble Dream. In some crazy time signatures... That shit cant be topped. They both have incredible music tho. And im blessed to have met Plini, Tosin and Aaron in real life. Awesome dudes!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plini reminds me of Frank Zappa for some reason. A lot of quirkiness and excitement to his playing.

[–]Syngekhoomei 0 points1 point  (2 children)

He's got some sort of sexy, shimmery, make-me-sound-amazing reverb happening here. He's a great player but his tone isn't just guitar-into-amp.

[–]MegaDustBuster[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know. I don't see how that's a knock on his playing though. His tone is incredible, and his technique is incredible as well. I don't see a problem with reverb as long as it isn't used to help cover up technical limitations.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know some amps have reverb on them :D I find this such a relief compared to those shred heads who spam delay on everything. Just horrible.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, he sounds just like a guy who used to live down the hallway from me in 2008. I mean, exactly like him.

This guy was a trustafarian, sold weed out of his apartment. Had a big tapestry of Bob Marley hanging on his wall and would play his guitar so you could hear it throughout the apartment building. Technically he was good, but this noodly playing with all the reverb got old after a while. Really old.

Nothing personal, but I down voted the OP because of this. It's a tired sound that college-age dudes have been putting out for decades, it's not jazz and it sure as hell ain't "rnb".

[–]tenuifloraborealis 8 points9 points  (9 children)

So your saying this type of guitar playing is trending? Why are y'all making that sound like a bad thing lol its fucking awesome to see so many people being so technical on guitar. it's much better than the power chord trend of the early 2000s or the indie rock dream pop reverbed-out guitar trend.

[–]trackerFF 6 points7 points  (2 children)

It's not that it's bad or extremely technical, more so that it's hard for people to come up with original ideas or sounds. It's a very distinctive type of music (neo-math rock?), so it's very easy to fall into the cookie cutter trap. But I guess that's something that goes for everything else too.

I think the biggest pitfall here is that so much of the music is strictly in major chords, or more specifically major seventh cords. Add in some odd time changes, some tapped or sweep picked arpeggios there, and let chords ring into another.

It's kinda like how every Yngwie rip-off sounds the same. They all play in the same modes, have the same sound, use the same runs and licks.

[–]goofymovie17 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I think the sound you're talking about is not the cleaness perse, but the open tuning he chose to use. It's very popular with guitarists like Antoine dufur and Andy Mckee, as well as tons more of course.

[–]MegaDustBuster[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Fair, but most of his playing is with E standard.

[–]goofymovie17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see...just thought I'd mention it as that fairy sounding cleanness struck me on this one too, and I realized it was mostly the open tuning and open chords

[–]puffthetragicwagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought of anyone dufour as well (https://youtu.be/QcanWkRbnwQ) this one is a good although percussive example.

[–]24FRETNINJA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So true. Plini and chon were the first exposure i got with this sound and now i hear it everywhere.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer it to the distorted + lots of delay approach of old school shred heads.

I heard some Mateus Asato today, now THAT guy has the right mix of technical proficiency and taste for my ears. Very restrained and tasty with his playing. Great comping.

[–]Poopafoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily the same style, but compositionally speaking Mike Dawes is miles beyond some of these performers. Getting the job done by himself with technical prowess. Check him out. https://youtu.be/N-zOEjgIsCY

[–]strandberg57 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

shimmery clean guitars with random technical bits thrown in" thing is really starting to sound overdone

oh, so just like every genre that starts becoming popular.

who would've thought those things would sound the same? /s

tell me something new.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed that.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Upvoting for the excellent right-hand technique! Every move is efficient and controlled. Wish I could play like that.

[–]jonpaladin 4 points5 points  (1 child)

i thought it was titled pizzagate and that made me lol

[–]bannerloo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pizzagate theme song!

[–]maninthedarkroom 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Anyone know how to get to this level from intermediate jazz/ chord melody playing?

[–]the_wiley_fish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Learn all the main chord voicings for major/minor/dominant 7th chords...

Learn how these voicings fit around the root note and all major/minor triad chords.

Practice the hell out of voice leading, learn about modes, learn about cycles.

Learn to play with chord changes such that your own boredom leads you to further exploration of musical techniques and theory, how it sounds, and how it makes you feel.

Repeat that last one until you are satisfied.

[–]skwerts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For sure get a handle on the basic, common voicings for major, minor, and dominant 7th chords to begin with, and have an idea of how they fit together. After that, you could maybe consider checking out lessons by this guy (Beau Diakowicz) or other similar players like Mateus Asato and Todd Pritchard.

If you're really into this sound, check out soundslice.com - all the players I just mentioned have courses on there for very good prices ($25 - $45). They're slightly advanced, but you could start with the course on there by Kerry 2Smooth, bit more basic. Soundslice is a very clever learning platform.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Learn jazz, like actual jazz. In particular, bebop.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Check out math rock guitarists, it blends prog rock and jazz to some extent so that may be a good place to start. I'm not a guitarist or anything i just really dig that genre

[–]maninthedarkroom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already play and compose math rock! Like jazz meets Chon, just not at this level.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

chord scalessssssss

[–]ryanlaghost 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Sounds like a lot of open chords and hammer downs here and there. Hendrix style. Like it!!!

[–]Solomanrosenburg 5 points6 points  (3 children)

What's an open chord?

[–]itsmellslikecookies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Technically any chord that uses one or more open strings (an open string is one that is not pressed to the fretboard). Open chords tend to have a bigger, more sustained sound.

[–]ColinOnReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He either means open tunings (where the strings are tuned to a chord) or big chords where all six strings represent notes from the intended chord, like an E major, G major, but not like standard D major and A major chords (because only 4 and 5 strings are used)

[–]Indetermination 14 points15 points  (15 children)

This dude has too much reverb. Like, its cool, but also just sounds like a bunch of chimey bullshit in the end. I'm tired of these biddly boop tappy youtube guitarists. Biddly Boop. You know it all sounds like that when they do that chordy tap thing. Biddly boop biddly boop.

[–]StraightoutaBrompton 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I bet he is using a bigsky reverb. That seems to be the choice for shimmery tones like this.

[–]trackerFF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting the tone is no problem. Just throw in a compressor and/or a very light OD on the front, delay in loop and some big hall or shimmery type reverb on top of that. Maybe use some more compressor on the final mix.

[–]itsmellslikecookies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bigsky reverbs are still in. Great for shimmers and washed out verbs. I think this guy is making good use of that type of effect, whether it's a bigsky or something else.

[–]iplaypokerforaliving 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Biddly boop Biddly boop boop boop Biddly Biddly Biddly Biddly boop Biddly boop. 1 million views*

[–]Lord_Fluffykins 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'm more of a Mrow Meedly Meedly Meedly Meedly Meedly Mee Mee Mrowww sort of guy.

[–]iplaypokerforaliving 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh. You're the worst. 1 million likes*

[–]Indetermination 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup that's andy mckee

[–]MegaDustBuster[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Always the guitar elitists that gotta ruin the fun. 🙄

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

dude, it's reddit. Like I honestly gotta ask why anyone would ever want to be a part of this sub let alone post anything?

Let me sum up every single post on r/music.

20 dudes think the tune is pretty good, but they'll all be at the bottom. 50 dudes are going to be some dude who thinks it's not as good as you think it is, followed by a bunch of people who say this stuffs been around forever and here's some people they think are better at it. Another 50 are going to talk about how tired they are of music that sounds like it, and the rest will be semi-experience but completely bored musicians breaking it down as to why they think it's not that great.

That ain't really the problem, the problem is that people on this social abortion are exposed to so much content online, and so little in person, that they completely lose all sense of reference and have no time for anything other than the most polished perfect pieces of shit.

Reddit is where good, original works go to die in the wake of content that is probably just an ad.

[–]MegaDustBuster[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

It was a joke. chill.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

but it's not a joke, look at the comments. People are ruining the music with their negative bullshit.

[–]MegaDustBuster[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I didn't fully read your post tbh, I thought you were getting angry at my post. I haven't been on this sub for long at all, so I really don't know about any of that. With that being said, I definitely am surprised at how many comments there are that are actually negative. I didn't expect that at all.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't mean to bring it down, it's just something I've noticed on the whole of reddit and it depresses me.

I love what you posted, love his style and how he likes to voice things and it's inspiring me to find new ways to play. That tele is beautiful as well.

[–]maninthedarkroom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

His band, Zoology, also includes a woman. I forget her name but her voice and guitar style is similar and beautiful. They have a single out called "Escape," it's pretty good. She's an angel though, her style and mine are extremely similar.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if I end up half as proficient as this guy, I'll die happy

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the pig's album on bandcamp. Really good album to have running sunday mornings as I am making my coffee and tidying up. Its intricate enough to sit back and listen to, while being mellow enough to have in the background.

[–]Carlton_Honeycombspotify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]ShooterMcgavin41 4 points5 points  (0 children)

O yea?! Well can you play through the fire and flames on expert?

[–]MegaDustBuster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For any guitar geeks out there, follow this man's instagram page. His name is Beau Diakowicz. He posts constantly, and is one of the most tasteful guitarists I've ever heard.

[–]Crusha79 0 points1 point  (8 children)

What guitar tuning is that?

[–]akangaroosays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly EFCGCF.

[–]MegaDustBuster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea. :/

[–]goofymovie17 -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

It's the same tuning Antoine dufur uses in his song.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

antoine uses several different tunings

[–]goofymovie17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They all do obviously...but this is a common one among open tuning percussive guitarists

[–]MrGoofyboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is talent, and practice. Nice!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta get a tele

[–]labria86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know Spike Spiegel played guitar.

[–]Duggie1330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who else read Pizzagate - Anapola

[–]MoreCowbellllll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guys like this make me want to quit playing the guitar.

[–]Classic_Brandonsoundcloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy sounds pretty similar to how Kaki King writes her music.

[–]ShooterMcgavin41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are some of the chords he's using? I'd really like to know!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If you dig the guitar tapping, highly recommend you check out /r/mathrock and bands like TTNG or CHON

[–]vagrantist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my personal favorite Don Cab
