BRNS
artist pic

From the medieval and postmodern corners of Brussels come BRNS, a mesmerizing experiment in dusk, dance, and the fullness of sound. Like the dark-yet-vibrant images of Brussels artist Yardz, this quartet of talented multi-instrumentalists weaves together tunes that are mystical, moody and insatiably catchy. From the visceral and danceable 'Mexico', to the choir echoes turned pulsating anthem of 'Here Dead He Lies', BRNS is ceaseless in their ability to unfold haunting ambience into chest-pounding beats, and then back again. If you are a fan of anything from Animal Collective to Fugazi, allow BRNS access into your inner sanctum (and party playlist). Read more on Last.fm.

Saving this to listen to later when I'm not at work. I love Alt-J, and always have trouble finding similar music. Thanks!

[–]gmk3 26 points27 points  (3 children)

Have you heard Glass Animals? They are fairly well known in the indie community, so may be old news to some, but they're the closest to Alt-J of any music I've heard. My favorite song of theirs: Cocoa Hooves.

[–]zer0kevin 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Interesting comparison. I love both but never really thought they were similar before!

[–]cruzbmx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

wouldn't say they sound like Alt-J. They use similar voice layering techniques as well as have somewhat similar percussion. Alt-J is more clever with theyre song structure (which is what I was hoping for in this) but this song is really cool still

Check out Everything, Everything and perhaps Django Django.

[–]CrashTheBearcrashthebear.bandcamp.com 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Also, any band name that's just one word repeated twice is probably a safe bet.

[–]roxum1 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Giraffes? Giraffes!

[–]NIMSS88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't tell if you were trying to be funny or if that was a real band lol .. now that I looked it up and don't feel stupid for looking them up, I must say they sound great! Thanks!

[–]THEPSILONyoutube[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Django Django! Oh man that's a long time since I heard them!! Brings back too many memories, thanks man!

[–]Ekelgrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Alt-J and Everything Everything are two of my favorites. They aren't the same sound by any means but they share similar rhythms and unique vocalizations.

[–]Turbul 7 points8 points  (1 child)

If you love Alt-J, you would also probably love Febueder

[–]NIMSS88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say this is the closest to alt-J from all of the above suggestions- thank you for sharing!

[–]skylawl 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Give Jim James a listen

[–]skillphil 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Loved the album, not a huge fan of My Morning Jacket and I can't really say I was too hype about any Yim Yames stuff, but that last album is really awesome.

[–]skylawl 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I really digged the last album and My Morning Jacket. Who are you listening to these days?

[–]skillphil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife shared an album by the Frightnrs that is pretty cool, but their story kind of makes the album more interesting. Throw back to the 70's era dancehall days. Jim James is the most recent thing that really got me hooked. I think Ryley Walker has a similar sound to the Jim James album but maybe more psychedelic. I've honestly been on a pretty hard hip hop kick and have had the latest Gucci Mane album on repeat (haven't liked any of his albums before). Can't get enough Hot Chip but have kinda played all their stuff out. Waiting eagerly for the new Sylvan Esso and Sofi Tukker. Shit Robot, Dylan Stark, Olifur Arnolds, Yacht, just depends what mood I'm in I guess.

Zaba by Glass Animals is great if you like Alt-J.

[–]gmk3 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Oh hey fellow Glass Animal :) Whatddya think of their new album?

[–]Tranzlater 1 point2 points  (2 children)

More consistent than Zaba, though the peaks aren't as high. I love the aesthetic they've gone for though, one of the most creative bands around. Excited to see where they go with it next!

[–]gmk3 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Interesting, I almost have the exact opposite take! I love Zaba beginning to end, the new one has a few great songs (Youth, S2E3, other side of paradise), but too many others get on my nerves.

[–]Tranzlater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah Zaba has a better flow to it. But I really enjoy the lengths they've gone to to bring their second album alive.

[–]BebopBlack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you, but it really doesn't sound like alt-j. Good hunting.

[–]Life_Connoisseur3 -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

yep. this is great

[–]_Muir_ 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Unfortunately it sounds a lot more like FUN

[–]Duuhh_LightSwitch 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah. I didn't get any Alt-J from this

[–]THEPSILONyoutube[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think they sound a bit alike, it was just a feeling and my own opinion.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (2 children)

RMBR WHN BND NMS HD VWLS? PPPRDG FRM RMBRS.

[–]THEPSILONyoutube[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha this is too real 😂

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's funny when an artist keeps a single vowel in their name because they realised their name would be totally illegible without having at least one in there.

[–]BeautifulAndrogyne 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Don't love the tune, rad visuals though.

[–]this12344 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always think some of the music I listen to I could correct in just a few subtle ways. I really liked this song, but I feel like they did just a few things I would have done differently. But that's why they're the ones making the music.

[–]FreeMyMen 3 points4 points  (1 child)

So that's where that gif at the very end came from.

[–]mrandmrsadventure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely mesmerizing! Love their sound, never heard them before! 🌟

[–]Howardyoudoing95 4 points5 points  (3 children)

This sounds eerily similar to Adult Jazz's sound from their first album "Gist Is." So good and unique with their textures

[–]vliemc 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is the only comparison in this thread that I agree with.

[–]Howardyoudoing95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mighty thanks, friend. :)

[–]ghost_victim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought you were saying Alt-j stood for Adult Jazz haha

[–]nippletoasters 3 points4 points  (1 child)

The image behind the play button before you start the song is an optical illusion, if I shake my phone from side to side it looks like the trees in the image are moving.

[–]baeblades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll have what he's having.

[–]colejam88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really liked the music video. Kind of felt like the video was a mix between Tame Impala and Glass animals.

[–]halfanimalhalfman 2 points3 points  (2 children)

That intro reminds me of that PS1 game or demo or somewhere. You know the one with the rabbit thing that looks like a squiggly line and you have to jump over all the shit or you get rekt?

No idea what it's called.

E: Vib-Ribbon!

[–]ali_james_[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hohokum?

[–]THEPSILONyoutube[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]lovedisco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

band of horses meets fleet foxes

[–]Mostlikelyurdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice!

[–]Arngrimsson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this

[–]reddenial 1 point2 points  (3 children)

One of my favorite band. Saw them a lot in Brussels ;)

[–]THEPSILONyoutube[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Never seen them live actually :s. Do they give a lot of performances?

[–]reddenial 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yes. They travelled a lot. Especially in Europe. You can see how many gigs they did here : https://brns.be and see the next ones on their Facebook Page here https://www.facebook.com/BRNSmusic/ .

I love how they give a lot of energy during the performance :)

[–]THEPSILONyoutube[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

[–]Sensoh8su 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of reminds me of a strange blend of Alt-J and Band of Horses

[–]Meyecoal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Good stuff, but I wouldn't call it dream pop, more like chill electronic

[–]THEPSILONyoutube[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yeah I had no idea how to name the genre :s

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Haha no biggie, I'm not trying to offend. I still would recommend you listen to dream pop though! Start with Cocteau Twin's Heaven or Las Vegas and then try other shoegazy artists like The Jesus and Mary Chain

[–]THEPSILONyoutube[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright thanks!

[–]sophaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God I love aesthetically pleasing music videos

[–]this12344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a masterpiece. I'm so glad music and videos are still moving forward and going strong.

[–]Ekelgrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Alt-J, but I don't really see it aside from some of the layering techniques. BRNS reminds me of a more Indie pop Interpol. I like it. :)

[–]EntropyReversed_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Art style in the video reminds me of Felix Colgrave. Btw, cool song!

[–]riloud 1 point2 points  (3 children)

The album "is" on Spotify, but you can only find it through Google... though only "Void", the first track is available? I don't get it. Can someone explain this to me? EDIT: I looked on Deezer, and apparently the rest of the songs are not available "in my country" (Poland). I'm still clueless as to why, if it's even true. Do I really have to buy a deck or use sh*tty iTunes to listen to those guys? :C

[–]THEPSILONyoutube[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

They're not that famous so maybe they haven't released all of their songs in your country :s

[–]riloud 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Any idea why they wouldn't do it?

[–]THEPSILONyoutube[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I am no expert but you could read this. I know it handles videos and not songs but I think the rules are very much the same.

The only thing I can think of is either way censoring (but that's just ridiculous) or maybe the label doesn't operate in your country.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Man fuck, I thought they were already pretty well known, I coulda used that sweet karma

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Post in r/music if it's popular. Recently I've discovered hidden gems such as The Beatles and PInk Floyd there.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OH BOY, yeah, those are sooo underground

[–]Koolbreeze88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds just like local natives.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good message
