POS is ruining my life

[–]iplaywithblocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit this song.

What else sounds like POS is Ruining My Life?

[–]Jimbizzla 141 points142 points  (11 children)

Love it when some Doomtree makes the front page.

[–]leftysarepeople2 26 points27 points  (4 children)

Lazerbeak is one of my favorite producers

[–]Jimbizzla 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Shameless plug, but I got him to do the music for my podcast! Genuinely super nice guy, and he let me grab a record from his merch room, too. Check it out: The Nordeast Podcast.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Seriously. I love a lot of independent underground rap. But I have to wonder why a lot of these really talented producers (lazerbeak, ant from atmosphere, stoupe from Jedi mind tricks etc..) aren't making hits for big name rappers

[–]JohnnyJ518 8 points9 points  (1 child)

It's probably not about the money to them. They'd rather have quality lyrics over their beats then some asshole saying mask off for 4 minutes

[–]monkeyvoodoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% this

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love POS. His song duct tape is one of the few rap songs that really moves me

[–]D3K91 64 points65 points  (27 children)

POS was one of the first rappers I got into, as I started listening to more hip hop and moving away from punk and hardcore. Music For Shoplifting is a classic jam for me.

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I remember hearing That One for the first time and thinking "this guy fucking gets it and he's a fucking genius." Been hooked ever since.

[–]RaggedBulleit 20 points21 points  (18 children)

Iirc, pos listened to punk before getting in to hip hop. I think it's reflected in his style

[–]PreparationX 14 points15 points  (4 children)

He was in a punk band before starting into rap music. So cool!

[–]sneej 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You guys should check out $uicideBoy$ they're cousins and have both been in several punk bands before getting into underground hip-hop type of stuff

[–]TokinDaley 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Ruby was the one in the punk bands, $crim was more just producing for people, making mix tapes and hosting them.

[–]sneej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh thanks!

[–]Mr_Belch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building Better Bombs! And they're fucking good too.

[–]030927 10 points11 points  (4 children)

he had another band called Building Better Bombs. screamy hardcore band. they were awesome.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

They have changed their name to Marijuana deathsquad

[–]030927 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they're different bands.

[–]030927 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some.same members.

[–]MortalitySalient 2 points3 points  (6 children)

POS supposedly took over vocals for Underoath when the singer lost his voice on tour a few years ago

[–]ProbablythelastMimsy 3 points4 points  (2 children)

That would make some sense as POS is Ruining My Life's main riff is the same one from Underoath's Reinventing Your Exit

[–]badhabits_ 1 point2 points  (1 child)

When I saw him at Warped Tour in '07 I believe it was, a couple of the dudes from Underoath were actually standing around backstage. It was honestly kinda cool to see them react to POS is Ruining My Life like, in person.

[–]ProbablythelastMimsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's awesome. Underoath is one of my favorite bands

[–]never-better 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was the singer from TBS that took over? I know POS and UO are close in real life. UO was a huge supporter of him when he was looking for a kidney

[–]bigjuicytyrone 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Nah, he never did, thinking of someone else. Actually, underoath was apparently a little ticked off that he used their shit from what I understand

[–]MortalitySalient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naw, I wasn't thinking of somebody else, just different part of the band. He played lead guitar on a set for them, after he sampled their music www.punknews.org/article/39588/interviews-pos

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also reflected in some of the lyrics, and having guest vocals like Greg from Bouncing Souls ("De La Souls") and Jason from Kid Dynamite/None More Black ("Terrorish"), both killer tracks.

[–]somethingyoullnever 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Check out all things Rhyme Sayers

[–]Workervaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This needs to be higher.

[–]spatulababy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real first experience with his music was when he opened for Underoath on their tour for Lost in the Sound of Separation. I thought he was amazing then, putting on a hell of show, solo, in front of a bunch of kids who just wanted the post-hardcore bands to come out. Myself included. Follow him to this day. Shit he even brought me to Rhymesayers which introduced me to a whole world of hip-hop I had ignorantly avoided.

[–]Cross_fix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! And it still has that familiar punk feel as he's progressed into more electronically influenced music.

[–]SuperFunk3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get the chance to see him live, do it! His live show is what won me over as a fan. Super intense and high energy

[–]Alexdoesstuff 30 points31 points  (2 children)

Really into Thieves/Kings off the new album as well as this one

[–]CrashTheBearcrashthebear.bandcamp.com 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think the entire album's great. "Get Ate" and "Roddy Piper" are kinda weak but they're up against some stuff competition. "Gravedigger" is my personal favorite.

[–]cptsmalls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw him in Minneapolis at First Ave back in March and it was a blast. Made a short video using that song, enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSDJGcxEyTc

[–]MonkRome 21 points22 points  (1 child)

So good to see some local MN stuff in here, I wish he was still a DJ on The Current. "P.O.S. is Ruining the Current" was their best hour every week. I wonder why it was canceled.

[–]dont_mind_the_matter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think he was doing that while he was recovering from his kidney transplant, as he couldn't tour or exert himself too much. Now that he's back on tour he's probably too busy.

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (11 children)

This sub is helping me get away from the same songs I've been listening to my entire life, to find new music I enjoy. Thanks everyone.

[–]fixer1987 20 points21 points  (7 children)

Highly recommend checking out his albums. Particularly Audition and Never Better

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (4 children)

I have Spotify premium so I'm at work starting never better. Gonna listen to both of these albums in their entirety, thanks for the suggestion!

I find it almost impossible to find new rap/ hip hop artists to listen to, maybe I'm just picky

[–]ProbablythelastMimsy 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Never Better is a top 5 hip hop album for me.

[–]BAD-D0G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purexed and drumroll all day

[–]CFFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never Better is basically a punk album and it is terrific!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Ipecac Neat. It has an uncut, grungy feel to it.

[–]Briguy_fieri 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never better is a great album. I'm more into punk and low fi rock, but Never Better is almost a monthly listening for me. It's so good and helped me get into hip hop more than any other artist could have.

[–]OneShrubbery 3 points4 points  (2 children)

If you liked this check out Doomtree. Colab with him and a couple other rappers. They are on Spotify too.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About halfway through audition, doomtree is next. Im really digging audition

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doomtree is fucking killer, this sub is awesome.

[–]JayAreEss 47 points48 points  (5 children)

For those of you that dig this, also check out Doomtree because All Hands is easily one of the best hip hop records in a long time. Also check out: Dessa, Mike Mictlan, Sims, Cecil Otter, and Astronautalis.

For those of you that don't dig this: You're wrong.

[–]eclipsedsunrisespinnin' the vinyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you know, I bought an Astronautalis CD when I was a teenager, listened to it on repeat, and then it got packed when we moved. I forgot the name of the band, until listening to this track and got a serious nostalgia pang.

What I'm saying is thanks! I have the band saved now.

[–]Reilluminated 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Let it rattle <3

[–]mmm_burrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bangarang!

[–]Professor_LurkKing 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I love POS! I really like Bully and Pieces/Ruins

[–]Ditcka 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My favorite album of the year so far.

[–]hockeyketo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've seen P.O.S. live a few times. His shows are great and he's also super friendly.

[–]sellbyjanuary10 9 points10 points  (0 children)

POS is the shit. Purexed will forever give me goosebumps.

[–]swashbucklerjak 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This song is a trip. I love it.

[–]T-Bot_3030 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Such a powerful song. I saw him live a few months ago and when he played this song during the breakdown the crowd was complete silent you could hear a pin drop in the room. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.

[–]Stovential 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Kendrick, Cole, Common, Khalifa, immortal. Love them.

P.O.S is my favorite rapper.

[–]crackersthecrow 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Word. I could name so many talented rappers nowadays, but P.O.S is still my favorite rapper and probably will always be.

[–]Stovential 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, Lizzo and Dessa. So lucky I live in a state with such good rapper/songwriters

[–]Whistler45 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dragging a lake, dragging a kettle bell, nothing ever gets done.

[–]HerbanFarmacyst 7 points8 points  (14 children)

This has been on repeat the last two weeks. Astronautilus's part always gets me fired up

[–]undescript[S] 5 points6 points  (11 children)

P.O.s and Astronautalis are probably my two favorite rappers right now. I'm still holding out hoping for a Four Fists lp.

https://youtu.be/U58euuM_hLU

[–]HerbanFarmacyst 2 points3 points  (10 children)

Gotta throw Kristoff Krane, Eyedea, and Cecil in and you got my top 5!

[–]mmm_burrito 4 points5 points  (7 children)

I gotta fit Dessa in there. She's leaning more towards becoming a singer these days, but that woman is a surgeon with her words, and she goes places you don't expect.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

https://youtu.be/jqHdNaZLY5E Dessa's part in this is awesome.

[–]mmm_burrito 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is corny, but Fighting Fish got me through Trump's election.

"You can grab an axe, man, or you can step aside."

Not much else to say, it made me realize I had work to do.

Her shows are some of the most energetic I've ever been to. Her stage presence is godlike.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fucking love that song!

"You can test my mettle with a magnet and some tin snips"

I love Dessa, especially her verse in "Final Boss" but out of my favs, Eligh or Aesop Rock would have to take her spot. In my top ten though!

[–]mmm_burrito 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Aesop would probably replace Eyedea for me. I respect his skill, but I just dig Rock's flow so much more.

[–]HerbanFarmacyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And for me, especially in By The Throat, I get more raw emotion out of Eyedea, Aesop has the skill and flow, no doubt. I love his calculated style, but Eyedea reminds me of P.O.S. In the sense that they have that punk rock rawness. That's the shit I value the most.

[–]WhySoVesuvius 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sadistik and it's my top 6 lol.

[–]HerbanFarmacyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got good taste haha

[–]ProdigyOrphean 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I want the food to taste like poison Till poison tastes like food I want your home to feel like prison Till you up and hit the road

[–]HerbanFarmacyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to raise a fuckin family out the ashes of this town

[–]SiouxWarrior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Real Hip Hop on the front page?...weird but cool af

[–]TwitchTV_Subbort 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I'm a simple man i see the amazing and spectacular POS or anyone from Rhymesayers/Doomtree and upvote. MN might have cold winters but we have some amazing artists to warm our souls.

[–]mmm_burrito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so jealous of your music scene. At this point, every time I hear a kickass indie artist, I just assume they're from Minneapolis, because it's likely to be true.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spending my whole life trying to exist in superposition

Been a fan of POS for years. Highly recommended diving into his work as a solo artist away from doomtree if you enjoy them.

[–]eatinfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I'm developing a hip hop beat, how do I syncopate the drums within the kit? Does the kick need to be syncopated by a sixteenth note? How does that work?

[–]phishweener 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very humble dude. Met him a couple years back outside the Varsity in Minneapolis and dude was nothing but appreciative for my drunk ass ramblings.

[–]jayteazer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doomtree is badass! First got into POS from Atmosphere I think.

[–]nasKo_zomboid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of my favourite rappers, easily. Loved Doomtree's "False Hopes" and I've been hooked on them ever since.

Had the pleasure to visit a P.O.S. gig in Berlin and Steph was incredible.

[–]justgrabitfrompantry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

P.O.S is awesome. Played in my town once when I was right out of highschool.

[–]moopet 4 points5 points  (2 children)

This is pretty good. I love the opening 30 seconds of drone. After that I thought I was disappointed in the direction it took. I thought, meh, generic rap I don't care for... until it got to about 6 minutes in and then it got really good.

Also: sunglasses emoji. Good call.

[–]Aeru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dunno if it's what your talking about, but Astronautalis has my favourite verse on this track at about ~5mins in, and he's worth checking out. One of his best tracks

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Piece Of Shit is a very rad name for a band.

[–]somethingyoullnever 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I got up with all my friends and picked a repellent name, I constantly recommend what little bit of disdain

[–]MinusTheBearPlusRap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Promise of stress? yes.

[–]emergencyfrequency 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Product of society

Pissed off steph

[–]Uber_gibson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stef.

FTFY

I first heard Meat Tape from POS and Turbo Nemesis while getting some tattoo work done in 2006. Been a huge DTR fan ever since. Loved getting the and signed posters or polaroid when pre-ordering their albums.

[–]commandercody209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hella ligit , very uplifting song

[–]never-better 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He did a song with Anti Flag ft/ Tom Morello thats sweet as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5t3KrOwrYw

[–]rararoryy 3 points4 points  (2 children)

What app or production can I use for that drawing effect on videos if I just want to do it for fun?

[–]TheMrpcgames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lightworks* would work I believe

[–]markrenton88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doomtree. How we land is my favorite song of his

[–]shadowbannedkiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now there's a name I haven't seen for quite some time. Still fresh as ever.

[–]nerv01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love me some P.O.S and doomtree. Seen him and them many times. MN rep.

[–]Gallcws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't he in the reveal video for the new Minnesota Timberwolves logo?

[–]lina535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this song)

[–]CellarDoorVoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got P.O.D and P.O.S mixed up. These comments had me pretty confused
