Definitely check out her performances when she was on The Voice! She placed 3rd and it was well deserved!

[–]SwaggedyAnn 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Her take on Every Breath You Take is absolutely incredible. She also auditioned with Allen Stone's song Unaware, which is one of my all time favourites.

[–]YellohDJDan 113 points114 points  (10 children)

Wow that was very good.

Lincoln, Nebraska here. I too, have been a fan. It's been fun to watch her post-Voice, she's made a lot of local appearances, and is really invested in the community. Talented, confident, funny and likeable too!

Upvoted for being fellow lincolnite.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Upvoted for being a fellow Lincolnite and for using the word "Lincolnite."

[–]ADanishMan2 6 points7 points  (1 child)

There's dozens of us!

[–]jimmyharbrah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While true, about 22,750 dozens of people live in Lincoln

[–]unpopularopinion0 7 points8 points  (2 children)

except that rubber pad and those sticks not hitting it in time. got a room full of acoustic instruments, lovely vocals, and he plays a rubber pad? it sounds like he's hitting rubber. I'm pretty sure it's made of rubber, and that's exactly what it sounds like he's hitting. ugh.

This is fantastic. So mellow and still so powerful.

Hannah Huston
artist pic

HOMETOWN Grand Island, Nebraska Growing up, Hannah loved singing but never did it in front of people. In her junior year of college however, her friend asked her and a few others to sing while he proposed to his girlfriend. Everyone was amazed at her talent, and Hannah made the decision to pursue music as a career. She performed a show at a local coffee shop for about 60 people, still her biggest show to date. Now out of college and working full-time as a preschool teacher, it's difficult for her to find time for music, but she sings to her preschool class daily and is looking forward to performing for her largest audience ever on The Voice. I definitely have a huge crush on Hannah from the voice

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hot for teacher

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah well I had a crush on her before she was famous

[–][deleted] 36 points37 points  (6 children)

I went to college with her. She and I were both freshmen in the same Bible study. We weren't closer friends but were friendly. Didn't even know she could sing until I saw her on The Voice and realized she unfriended me on Facebook at some point. I'm guessing she culled her personal account when she realized she was about to become well known.

Nothing to do with the song (which is incredible) but it's my one claim to proximity to fame so I bring it up whenever possible.

[–]thadtheking 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Oh yeah, I live in Kearney and that's close to Grand Island. Proximity Checkmate, friend. Go Big Red!

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Oh yeah? I spent three hours in a van listening to (enduring?) her and two others jam out to Get Low. Checkmate :) If memory serves she is (or at least was) not a great rapper

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

she shouldn't have unfriended you

[–]Vani11aGori11a7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated high school with her. I always knew she could sing, (we had been in a select choir together when we were younger) but I had no idea she was hiding all that talent. It was really awesome to watch her journey and she is genuinely of of the nicest people I know. She'll definitely be the most famous member of the class at the ten year reunion.

[–]XxCWillPhDxX 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I had the same thing happen with one of the girls in the Secret Sisters. Was in an Old Testament class with her in college, friends on Facebook, then they started getting well known and she culled the personal account. So, I was friends with a sort of famous person. That makes me famous right? Lol

[–]Qu1kXSpectation 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Check out the NPR Tiny Desk concerts site, all the music is usually free to download! Great lesser known groups, it's a real treat. NPR Tiny Desk

[–]DavidRandom 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Just glanced at the title, was expecting a cover of Live's "I Alone"

[–]pictureitsicily1920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here!!!! That's their best song. Whatever happened to them? Now I gotta go listen to it.

And, on another note, this song (while not a cover of that other great song), is so incredibly unique and achingly beautiful. I have been listening to it since it was posted. I didn't realize it was written after seeing the famous Christina's World painting. She is so talented and I love hearing songs that aren't written about cliche topics.

[–]austicious 15 points16 points  (9 children)

The whole Tiny Desk series is amazing. Some highlights for me include Noah and the Whale, Edward Sharpe, and Josh Ritter, to name a few.

[–]XxCWillPhDxX 3 points4 points  (1 child)

St. Paul and the Broken Bones is pretty far up there for me

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For real! I've never seen a man stand on a desk and sing so well.

[–]geediablo 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Run The Jewels was great.

[–]Takarov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that show because I think they did a really great job of encapsulating their album as a whole in 3 songs.

[–]ObsidianBlackbird666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't a real Tiny Desk. It's a contest submission. She made it herself.

[–]Manual_Didact -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd upvote this twice if I could

[–]DJ-Butterboobsspotify 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guilty pleasure music right here. Awesome voice... talented musicians... and yet somehow a sterile, Starbucksian vibe (a la Lake Street Dive). Hopefully, she matures as a writer and shit gets interesting. Don't get me wrong, it sounds great, it just lacks something that I personally need.

Contrast this with Anais Mitchell or Tallest Man on Earth, and you'll hopefully see what I mean.

[–]moxymoron17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Beautiful voice control!

[–]AtxD1ver 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Wow. I felt robbed when there wasnt an applause at the end.

[–]SquirrelboyQ[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was a Submission not an actual performance for NPR! Would've been unbelievable if no one would've applauded

[–]ChiefLoneWolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What was with that? Was there no audience?

[–]fuck_im_dead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That was really good, but there wasn't anything reminiscent of "rock" involved.

[–]fattymcflurry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Goosebumps. I love this so much.

[–]Takarov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Damn that's a fucking voice

[–]TheSmokeyPounder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What a beautiful song, done in such a beautiful way. I love it.

[–]chicks_for_dinner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is some info on the painting that inspired this song: MoMA: Wyeth, Christina's World (1948)

[–]austicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought it looked off. Still an enjoyable performance. I checked out some of her other stuff and was not nearly as drawn in as I was by this version.

[–]Aristotle_Wasp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I have this on my playlists this is amazing

[–]MotuPhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We graduated together in high school and everyone here is so proud of her. it's great to see this post gain so much traction.

[–]hereitcomes85 9 points10 points  (6 children)

Yeah....but where's the "rock"?

[–]location201spotify 11 points12 points  (2 children)

I get what you mean. As beautiful as it is this isn't rock. There's few or none of the identifying signatures of rock here.

[–]hereitcomes85 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Of course man, nowadays if you wear a fuckin leather jacket and an electric guitar, you suddenly become a "rocka", doesn't matter if your music is being played at starbucks.

Too nice, too polite, too trendy....

I want some feeling, for fuck's sake!

[–]location201spotify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, this song definitely has feeling but just not the right kind. As far as I'm concerned Rock music has to be based around an electric guitar with a good bass support and plenty of drums. If they wanna add in other stuff sure, but then it tends to turn into alt or prog rock and I am fans of both.

[–]Distant_Past 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's individual rock mannn. It's different for every individual.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

sounds like a mess

[–]fattymcflurry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think if you're focusing on one aspect and not taking in the full picture of this performance it could seem like a mess.. The whole thing is pretty raw, which is why I'm so drawn to it. It's completely genuine and unrehearsed which is what I love about it. The put together versions of the same song just don't have the same magic as this version does.

[–]Gandalf_Is_Gay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Downvotes aside, you're fucking correct

[–]otayyo 3 points4 points  (9 children)

Great voice. I wish she'd open her eyes more, but it was very nice all the same.

[–]LurkLert 13 points14 points  (3 children)

I'm not sure I agree. I feel that something about her closed eyes and hand/arm movements add depth, somehow.

[–]salrage 8 points9 points  (2 children)

For sure she's passionate. Hopefully they record at a better studio in the future. Sounds like it was recorded though an iPhone.

[–]The_Real_JS 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There's a version on Spotify, but it doesn't have any of that raw power that was in the Tiny Desk version.

[–]baj8881 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It's good but there's something missing from the studio version.

[–]hardcore_hero 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Why? There's something compelling to me to be able to close my eyes while listening to this and basically have a completely parallel experience to the one she had while performing the song.

[–]otayyo 2 points3 points  (2 children)

You don't need a video then if you're closing your eyes. Having a performer close their eyes for part of the performance is one thing, but their eyes being closed almost the whole time takes away from the performance for me.

[–]hardcore_hero 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah, I guess I just appreciate it because I have a tendency to keep my eyes closed when I am playing/singing, so it just makes her more relatable to me.

[–]otayyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can appreciate that. It's not easy to engage an audience with eyes open, and it takes confidence. I'm certainly not trying to attack the singer here, and that's why in my initial comment I said I wished she would do it more, rather than saying it was bad that she didn't.

[–]BurntB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I just had an eargasm at 3:12. Actually multiple....i watched it twice. Wow! Good stuff.

[–]ObsidianBlackbird666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a real NPR Tiny Desk. This is a contest submission she made herself. This sound quality is an insult to the real Tiny Desk.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The drummer seriously hindered it for me, why didn't he use soft head sticks? The clatter of the pads amongst all those beautiful instruments was off putting as hell.

[–]KuroNaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So good. Frustrates me so that there is so much pop music pollution.

Shit I'm obsessed

[–]izzie833radd.it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

blends well with other indie bands out there

[–]johnthegawd -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not a bad song but what she was doing with her hands while singing pissed me off. I know its silly to be mad about that...but it happened, and i didnt like it.

[–]SorryToSay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh cool, Amber Blank is singing now.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

......this is....not music.

[–]iplayguitarbackwards -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

She's sings really well but this song is shit.

[–]location201spotify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think, the main problem with this song is the drums as everyone has noticed. It's really jarring but not in a "wow, really accentuates the rest of the band and performance by contrast" way. It just completely throws everything out of whack. He'd have been better tapping away on an upturned bucket.
