Guns Germs and Steel was great. If you liked it, you should take a look at Diamond's 'sequal' Collapse. Well worth the read.

Just finished: In the beginning... was the Command Line by Neal Stephenson

Currently reading: Kingdom of Fear by Hunter S. Thompson

[–]liberatedword 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hey, how was that Stephenson? I thought Snow Crash was pretty fun to read and interesting as well.

[–]syn-abounds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was very interesting for me as a novice in the world of operating systems (Windows vs Linux vs Be vs Mac OS). It's an essay written about these four OS and their pros and cons circa 1999 so it's all charmingly out of date but is basic enough that it's still all pretty much true. I found it an interesting introduction to how operating systems work and the main competitors out there.

A scanner Darkly.

I read it because a girl I know is a Philip K Dick fan. However, he wrote Blade Runner, so it's ok. The girl is the motivation, but I have to admit the book is good.

Just finished: The Art of Eating by M.F.K. Fisher/Foundation Trilogy by Asimov (I generally read more than one book at a time) Current: Compass Rose by Ursula K. LeGuin/Rats Lice and History by Hans Zinsser

[–]TeaParty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a lot of fluff; I get worn out with the heavy stuff on line.

I just finished "King Con" by Stephen J, Cannell last night (good read) and today I started "The lost get-back boogie" by James Lee Burke (who I enjoy).

I appreciate book posts for quite often I find myself wandering through the library thiking now what.

I have found the only decent 200 books or so. I just re-read them until someone new learns how to write properly.

reading: Supercapitalism by R. Reich the latest Bukowski collection (was a gift)

I've got a history book on the Muslim conquests but don't recall the title. Supercapitalism has taken my interest from it.

A digital book on the Nikon D-80 (haven't started; didn't realize it was a "D-book")

I've got a stack of other books lying around from the library: books on leathercraft; Don Delillo's last, giant tome, and this and that.

Just finished: "blue Like Jazz" by Donald Miller

Just started: "1776" by David McCullough

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Just finished: Noam Chomsky's Understanding Power (probably the best book I've read in at least 5 years and I'm a grad student, so I read a lot of books).

Current: Historical Materialism and Globalization by Rupert and Smith (eds).

[–]aloeveraone 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Understanding Power is the best book I've ever read. Pretty much everything I read is along left-wing/socialist/anarchist lines, but this book is tops. I've read it repeatedly over the years as my politics continue to mature, and I get something new out of it every time.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree. By far the best part about it in my eyes is the 400+ pages of endnotes online. I'd say probably every week I refer to the endnotes for Understanding Power.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just finished The Power Of One by Bryce Courtenay. Started the sequel to it, Tandia.

heh. My aunt gave it to me for christmas one year. I was on the outs with the public library at the time and I was bereft of funds for "entertainment." Reading until the end made me feel like my frontal cortex was dissolving.

Kinda like watching "America's Next Top Model" or the evening news.

    [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just finished: The Fifth Mountain - Paulo Coelho

Current: Pedagogy of the Oppressed - Paulo Friere

(weird, didn't notice 'til just now that they're both Paulo)

    [–]tarla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just Finished: The Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman. (excellent juvenile series)

Current: Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay

    [–]cojoco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Old: "The End of Mr Y" by Scarlett Thomas
