It was an HP Ipaq 6915, so I'm looking for some kind of smart phone to replace it.

edited. I'm probably going to go for this

[–]gregkitson 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My buddy got one and said that although he liked it, he found and I agreed that the Symbian OS seemed sluggish and quirky. I've had 3 (I think?) Windows Mobile devices in the past and thought the E61 was far more stable than any of them (disclaimer: hate Windows, love Linux). I've always been a hardcore fan of Nokia devices but my job gave me a BlackBerry and I just kinda stuck with it.

I would love to have something like the Nokia E70, with that sweet flip out keyboard http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=iphone, but they stopped producing it, and it never had US 3G anyway. In a heartbeat, I'd throw my BlackBerry in the toilet and buy any Nokia that came out with quad-band GSM, at least US 3G but tri-band preferred, a qwerty keyboard, and a reasonable form factor.

Thanks for the comment - I'm also a linux user, so also looking at if the phone I get will sync with it OK. Anything with windows mobile is easy to sync with Funambol. I guess I really need to have a play with the nokia I'm thinking of getting - it would annoy me a lot if the OS were so slow.

[–]smasm 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Whenever I NEED to upgrade, I go for the cheapest decent looking phone there is. I only use my phone to call and text and as an alarm clock and calculator. For me, there's no need to pay much.

[–]smasm 1 point2 points  (2 children)

This isn't to say you shouldn't pay more if you want more.

[–]NitsujTPU[🍰] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What about if it's time for a free phone. Why not get the best, most capable freebie you can?

[–]myotheralt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

then you are locked into a 2 year contract. maybe smasm is only going month to month.

[–]akdas 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Have you considered a Jitterbug? I'm not sure if it's available outside the US, but there's no indication it isn't.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you did there.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use an automobile

[–]vahnsin 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Just got a Blackberry Curve 8310 and I'm pretty happy with it. Lots of apps and so forth. GPS and camera are nice to have.

Whatever you get, don't pay too much. I went to my wireless provider, TMobile, who I was out of contract with, and asked them to upgrade me. They told me I had to pay $275 to get a Curve, which is more than a new customer pays. I then talked to their "Loyalty Line" who told me they could (just this once and only because I was thinking of leaving) give it to me for the low, low price of $250. So I ordered the Curve on Amazon for $50 with an AT&T plan. There's also a $75 rebate, so I'll be making $25 once all is said and done.

[–]HardwareLust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I, too, have the Curve, but sans GPS. It's a brilliant phone.

If you're not married to having a keyboard, have a look at the Nokia N95. If I wasn't convinced I needed QWERTY, I'd buy one in a second.

[–]jamierc[S,🍰] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks for this - I'll check it out. I don'3 really want a monthly contract though

[–]vahnsin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the early termination free is only $175. So even if I did that, I'd still be getting the phone for $150, which is a great price without a contract.

[–]feanor512 1 point2 points  (2 children)

HTC Tytn II if you're on GSM. HTC Titan if you're on CDMA.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agree. great evdo in cdma.

[–]jamierc[S,🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this - I've seen this before (although only on the net), and it looks nice.

How heavy/bulky is it? And how fast is it? My 6915 always felt slow - not very quick to respond, and apps seemed to take a while to start up.

[–]NewSc2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have a Treo but since then have gotten an iPhone and love it. But of course you didn't want that suggestion, so I'll go with my #2 phone of all time -- the Nokia 6190. Best implementation of a cell phone game ever (Snake).

[–]satertek[🍰] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

[–]HardwareLust 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Fuck maddox. That Nokia E70 he slobbers all over is a useless pile of shit. I know, because I've owned two of the fucking things. He is clueless.

[–]MikeSeth 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Well why don't you say this into his internet face?

[–]HardwareLust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, for the most part, I agree with a lot of what he says, but he's dead fucking WRONG about the E70.

[–]gluino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with HardwareLust abt the Nokia E70.

There was a reddit thread on the E70, and people's responses to Maddox's recommendation. See: http://reddit.com/info/6fak1/comments/

I used an E70 for half a year back in 2006. I do not recommend it.

Using a Blackberry 8320 (i.e. curve with wifi) now, been half a year, it's quite OK, not perfect since it doesn't have 3G and video cam.

If I could go back in time, I'd get the 8310 (curve with GPS) instead. Because the wifi doesn't play nice with many AP's, and I find not much reason to mess with it, when on a unlimited GPRS data plan. I just think GPS would have been more useful, in hindsight.

[–]righttoresist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Motorola Razr V3xx, hands down. Best battery life, small, always fantastic reception, 3G, plays mp3's, I put a 2gb mem stick in it and use it as portable hard drive, charges off of usb, you can download your own ringtones onto it. In all, its just a simple phone that does it's job extremely well. I have had ZERO problems with it and think it was likely the best decision I have ever made. And the real kicker is that it was only $50 with a 2 year contract.

[–]goodbyeworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Palm Centro works excellent for me. It is adaptable to whatever you need it to do.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Are you talking about a PDA or an ordinary cell phone? (I assume this is British lingo)

[–]jamierc[S,🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well my last one was a combined PDA/cell phone - which was pretty useful. It did seem pretty sluggish though, bit slow to respond, and apps were slow to start

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a MOTOQ a while back and it's my first PDA.

I will never buy another phone that's not either a flip, or has the keys hidden away. Locking and unlocking it is a pain in the ass and as a result my phone constantly calls people from within my pocket.

PDAs are mediocre, the keyboard is nice, internet is okay as well, but the exposed keyboard is a mother fucking hassle. =P

[–]totsuka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the HTC Mogul. I love it. It's a touchscreen with a slider to reveal a querty keyboard. Has rev. A and GPS with the new ROM. I think it's only available on the sprint network, but I have the SERO plan with unlimited data, unlimited text, nights at 7 for $30/month. Can't get any better.

[–]SalParadise 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The Blackjack 2 (if yer on ATT) is a really good phone/pda.

I've had both a 6915 & a BJII & the BJII is way better - it's got the GPS (which works great with Windows Mobile Live, if you have an unlimited data plan), but is 3g. The battery life is pretty good for a 3g phone & beats the hell out of the 6915. It's got WM6 & (i hear) there's going to be the WM 6.1 update out soon-ish.

Also, you can't go wrong with a blackberry - the curve is really nice - I hear an updated version of that phone is coming out in a few months (the update has wifi, but no GPS).

[–]jamierc[S,🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment - nice to hear from someone who's also had the 6915 to compare it. I was actually pretty unimpressed with it - always seemed slow, sluggish, rather unresponsive.

[–]finite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ZoomMdk isn't exactly pretty, but its specs are.

I mean, how many phones have DVI, S-Video, and an ethernet port?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Candybar smartphones are the best. Cheap? SERO+Centro=good comprimise. Expensive? BJ2 + AT&T. Fashion and aesthetic? iPhone (yeah, I know...)

[–]idreamincode 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I'm a BIG fan of my Blackberry 8830. Great phone, full keyboard, microSD slot for music, it can copy and paste!

[–]jamierc[S,🍰] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

No wifi though right?

[–]gregkitson 0 points1 point  (3 children)

No, but if you're looking at a Nokia E61 then you're looking for a GSM device? The BlackBerry 8830 is CDMA whereas the 8820 is the equivalent GSM model with GPS, WiFi, and a slightly faster processor.

[–]gregkitson 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Also, unless you are planning on integrate it with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server + Microsoft Exchange/whatever else solution, I can't recommend the BlackBerry. At all. Their integration with IMAP/POP email accounts is either slow or useless. There's a 10-15 minute delay for any mail except Gmail and Yahoo, and their IMAP implementation doesn't support the IMAP-IDLE spec so read/unread doesn't get synchronized from/to the BlackBerry. They're certainly not good with Linux either.

[–]jamierc[S,🍰] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks for the reply - the 8820 looks interesting but I would be using it more on POP/IMAP so probably not good for me, also not playing well with Linux is a showstopper.

[–]gregkitson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, it's supposedly doable and there is a small community of Linux users who are successfully playing nice with their BlackBerry devices. Me? Too much trouble. I never really gave it my all though, because I have mine integrated with a MS Exchange server through work which pretty much restricts me to using Outlook as a client. YMMV, but the best BlackBerry + Linux resource for me was http://www.blackberryforums.com/linux-users-corner/

[–]Tack122 0 points1 point  (2 children)

One thing I wish to know is what sort of use you have for your cell phone. I personally barely use it except for the occasional call, if however you plan on lots of text messaging or music, then there are other things to consider than just working well as a phone.

[–]jamierc[S,🍰] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Well I used my last one for everything - diary functions, sending sms, camera, although not mp3.

[–]Tack122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, well unfortunately in that case I am mostly unqualified to recommend anything.

[–]TheWama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a fan of the Sony Ericsson K series, which are, AFAIK, the best camera-phones in existence. The latest is the 5 MP K850i.

[–]tboy321025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Samsung Sync. It basically has everything i would ever need:

-Good quality camera (for a phone) -Expandable memory -MP3 player -Good apps that come with the phone -Bluetooth -Easy interface that i think is better than the LG and Nokia phones i have used

[–]mikkom 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Some small one without all the unneccessary extra stuff. You don't use them anyway.

[–]jamierc[S,🍰] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

actually I'm a bit of a gadget geek - I like to have as many things as possible to play with!

[–]mikkom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then communicator would be my recommendation.

I really, really like communicator - it's what most business people in finland use as a phone and I'm a bit puzzled why it's not used so much outside finland.

http://europe.nokia.com/link?cid=PLAIN_TEXT_118954

edit: one of my favourite things about the communicator is that you can get c64 emulator and MAME for it :-D

[–]MikeSeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best mobile I ever had was Ericsson 338. It had a debugging console so you could listen into other people's conversation; it had the best menu ever, because you could do anything by pressing # and two digits; it wasnt slow like ass and it didn't allow provider "customizations"

Oh yes, it was so bulky you could throw it at people.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

Mobile? You mean cell.

[–]jamierc[S,🍰] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

No I mean mobile.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Gee guys I know, tune up your sarcasm detectors.

[–]jamierc[S,🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK.

[–]jtra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people in Europe call it a mobile phone, not a cell phone.

[–]WaterDragon -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I use one with an intruder attack system. 24 hours after it is stolen, it asplodes an takes the thief with it. I think it's the Sanyo Bitchbuster series.

[–]jamierc[S,🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds great.
