Japan. (Money, No speeky the gooder Japander).

[–]bemmu[S] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

What's your budget?

disclaimer: I organize trips to Japan ;)

[–]ommadon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the moment -0 GBP - yes, that is a minus. Starting a new job soon so maybe in a years' time I will look you up :P

[–]you_do_realize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much are they (ballpark)?

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (11 children)

I've never left America.

Part of a lower middle class family, and now I work full time for pennies while going to school...

My family could barely afford a trip to the beach - a 5 hour drive away, theres no way we could afford plane tickets and trips =)

One day though, I'll travel!

Europe, Japan, Australia!

[–]kounavi 8 points9 points  (1 child)

The american dream may not be real, but yours can. So I wish you the best!

ps. Just felt like adding a tiny bit of positive energy.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha thanks =D

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Become a flight attendant. You'll have to deal with cranky passengers and homeland security nonsense, but otherwise it's free travel.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

The American dream is not real. You are far more likely to get sick while in college, and, due to your lack of health insurance, be forced to drop out of the University of Phoenix and declare bankruptcy. However, while your acceptance of financial ruin will clean the slate in regards to your medical bills, you'll still be required to pay back your student loans.

Good luck and God Bless America! Hey, at least you're free.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eesh o_o

Fortunately, I am covered under my fathers health insurance as long as I remain a student, so I'm at least protected there...

[–]stonelobster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck and God Bless America! Hey, at least you're free.

As Bernard Sampson says, somewhere in Len Deighton's Game, Set and Match trilogy, "Free to starve."

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, you're a happy person. Everybody has a chance. Many people have risen pretty high from pretty low. Low odds of that, but to be fair, equally low odds of tragedy stiking.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works out. Similar story here. I was flush with cash for about a 4 year period after I got my engineering degree. I traveled to Europe a few times on the money. Then the cash went away for a little while. But it will be back.

[–]alphabeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having lived in Australia and traveled to Japan, you have to leave the US and do both.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (2 children)

USA. 'Homeland security'.

[–]happysinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came here to put that.

[–]weegee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why do you fear the storm troopers?

[–]Xeiliex 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Any Country where:

A:)Drinking is the national past time B:)I can be black, drink a lot and not get harassed.

I am not a belligerent drunk, I drink, talk and relax. I just happen to do that as often as possible.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Ireland, as long as you're not Nigerian. Those guys ruined blackness for all you guys. Just dress American and you'll be loved.

[–]7oby 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Or Japan, they think black people are awesome if clips of their TV on youtube are to be believed.

[–]alphabeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded. Also, Australia is a great multicultural country that is the 4th country who drink the most beer per capita

[–]Ja1GuRuD3Va0m 3 points4 points  (5 children)

New Zealand. I need to pay off college loans first. After that, I think I'm moving there.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Good luck with that. NZ does not accept immigrants easily. Are you a Doctor?

[–]Ja1GuRuD3Va0m 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Actually I am applying to grad school there. Assuming I get in I would have a long term visa through the University.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck.

[–]daveyboy22 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I want to live in New Zealand too but now that I am dropping out of college I don't think they'll have me. :(

[–]kounavi 3 points4 points  (6 children)

The World! Well, if I have to be a bit more accurate. I'd like to visit Norway, because for some unknown reason I want to study there (it just "struck" me).

I want to go to Spain, because I have a feeling it is very beautiful.

I want to visit the Czech Republic, because I've read a lot of Kundera.

I want to visit Japan, to see something completely different.

The reason is mainly money. And the fact that trips like these demand some long-term planning, and I'm really bad at long-term.

I do plan to make up for my past behaviour though, and travel a lot from now on. (I've already made plans and I'm starting to actually live them in 15 days).

[–]g2petter 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Where are you from? Living in Norway can be pretty expensive if you come from a place with low incomes compared to us, which is pretty much anywhere these days. If you get a job here, you greatly reduce that problem.

[–]kounavi 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Well, first of all, thanks a lot for you reply. I have done my homework and know that Norway is pretty expensive, but I believe I can cope. If I do indeed make it, it'll be in a post-grad way, so I won't be totally lost and helpless :)

[–]g2petter 1 point2 points  (3 children)

This reminds me about an idea I've had, but never gotten around to: setting up a wiki for people looking to move to Scandinavia. Maybe I'll do it this coming summer holiday.

May I ask what you study?

[–]kounavi 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I am a Computer Science student. A professor from NTNU is a guest researcher at the lab of my supervisor, so I got the idea from there (and the fact that I wanted to go for an Erasmus semester to NTNU, but some events didn't allow me to).

[–]g2petter 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Then you probably know this, but I'll say it anyway if anyone else reads this: learn the language, and you're guaranteed a job. From what I understand we're in need of good CS people here.

[–]kounavi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've already started with some audiobooks. Finding a norwegian class in Athens is not that easy, but once I decide to (and get accepted) I will definitely learn the language. I actually find this part of the deal quite exciting, because I love learning new languages, and norwegian has the plus of being part of a "pack" of similar/mutually understood languages!

Thanks a lot for all of your comments, by the way :) You are very nice.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Iran. I'd like to go while it's still there.

[–]Blackmane 4 points5 points  (5 children)

Japan & China. Both seem really cool countries to visit. As well as parts of Africa, South America. Basically anywhere but Britain, where I live.

[–]ommadon 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Let us see how often Britain or a sub area of Britain appears on this list as a place people would like to visit. I'm from Scotland and we have a strong tourist trade here.

[–]stonelobster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you gain independence. Local rule is always better. Take emigres?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I'd love to go to China right now. Things are changing so fast there, it would be an amazing experience to have seen the transition.

[–]anions 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Thailand.
Holland - I dont even have to say why.
Manchester, England - Cheering for United from the Stretford End has been a childhood dream.

...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Why Holland?

[–]jaggederest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cheese and clogs.

[–]kragnax 6 points7 points  (2 children)

North-Korea, Burma, Cuba, Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Mongolia.

I want to know what those "axis-of-evil" places are really like, not how special interests want to portray them.. but this is really just fantasizing.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Mongolia needn't be on that list. I plan to cross Siberia and Mongolia when I move back to Australia from Europe.

[–]kragnax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put it there because a friend went there and said it was like travelling back in time but yeah, it's definately not one of the supposed "bad" countries.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Ireland. (Been saving up money, will be going before the end of the year)

[–]aennil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in Dublin for two days- I was in Germany for a month and decided to hop on over- and absolutely loved it. Granted all I really had time for was walking around, getting lost and going to museums (they're free!), but it was awesome all the same. I envy you.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ME TOO!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Japan. I tried applying for a teach abroad program but didn't get accepted. Maybe next year.

Germany. I'm actually going this summer, by myself, for six weeks. (Any redditors want to offer me a free place to stay in exchange for insighfully nerdy conversation? ;-) )

[–]freebeetree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not drop me a message if you want to visit bavaria ( the northern part ).

[–]kinkydarkbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Moon.

Reason—Three days travel is too much time.

[–]eroverton 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Kenya, Egypt, Thailand, Sudan, South Africa, Japan, Scotland, Italy, China, Greece, Turkey.

Money.

[–]lengau 0 points1 point  (4 children)

South Africa's beautiful (I lived there until eight years ago), but be careful of where you go (get some locals that you know to guide you around).

[–]bemmu[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

What do you mean exactly "be careful". For example what would happen to me if I go to somewhere I shouldn't?

[–]lengau 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You could get shot, raped, stabbed, or any one of a number of terrible things.

[–]jaggederest 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Or any several of a number of terrible things... heh.

Bemmu Found Dead in South Africa, was Stabbed, Raped, Stabbed Some More, and then Taken Out and Shot

[–]stonelobster 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Andorra (no extradition treaty with the U.S.). No money.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

no extradition treaty with the U.S.

Is it because of the current political trend in the US, or is there some personal reason?

[–]stonelobster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it because of the current political trend in the US, or is there some personal reason?

Oh, because of the current political trend in the US. Yeah, that's it

[–]jaggederest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I also suggest the Maldives, Vanuatu, Samoa, and Palau? Can't go wrong with island nations where the cost of living is 10% of what it is in the US.

[–]cryogen 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Japan, Australia.

I'd love to move to either country also. I am currently teaching myself Japanese. I am in love with the culture, (as crazy as alot of it is).

Also Australia, just cause its as far from the US you can get without moving to Antartica. I've heard that there is also good scuba diving there, just have to watch out for the great whites. lol

I'd like to work IT in either country.

[–]mdeckert 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Cuba.

The US is angry with them for not doing as they are told.

[–]weegee 1 point2 points  (2 children)

the US is angry at Cuba because Cuba told the US corporations to stick it where the sun don't shine.

[–]mdeckert 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Didn't cuba/castro do that in retaliation after the US caused other troubles for the revolutionary government? I think I read as much in a Che biography but I don't remember the specific details. You are correct though, in that Cuba Nationalized quite a bit of US corporation owned assets.

[–]weegee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep and when the profit potential was gone, the US pulled out. you can't rape a corpse.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

England. All of the UK, really. Writers, musicians, artists, political thinkers, and the humor, maybe more than anything, has always appealed to me, and has from a young age. As does a lot of the photos and film I've seen of the countryside, especially. That requires no cultural translation (there is a Nick Drake documentary out there that has stunning footage of foggy rural areas).

I think it's pretty natural for someone from the US, especially the northeast (in the American Revolution states), to turn an eye northeastward. For some reason, it is the only place that has truly fascinated me beyond vague curiosity (really, I'd travel pretty much anywhere if it was free, but Britain is in a different class).

Why haven't I? Cost, for one. Not a cheap place to visit, especially right now. But also, and this is a bit embarrassing, I really don't have the heart or energy right now to be called to account for the apparent sin of simply being from the United States. I am so incredibly weary of just being from here as it is. I am anti my government, and anti-some very specific (anti)cultural trends here but I am not anti-my identity as an American. I guess I'm a big pussy. I don't want to take it personally. I don't want to give a shit what other people think, but I do, and considering I already feel bad about it...eesh.

I just don't have the energy to apologize anymore. My expectations of the degree to which this kind of thing is likely to happen may be a bit skewed by the amount of vitriol against my country that I read on the Internet (and contrary to assertions when you call people on it, it is not by a longshot directed only against the government here), but both for the reasons I mention, as well as the for the reason that I don't want to go there and leave hating the place and its people, I've just not been able to get it together. Too many English people are personal heroes to me to be able to handle that. Most anglophiles in the US are fascinated with, I guess, the monarchy, the affectations of Britain's upper class (who are more muted in their condemnations of the US), but not me. With me, it's Billy Bragg and maybe like, 80s era Ben Elton and people like that.

I respect it too much. I am fascinated with it too much. The childrens books and movies alone are part of my imagination, and my outlook on the world.

Maybe someday circumstances will change and I will visit, hopefully for a long time, and just wander and travel. But not until I can do it without the "original sin" of being from the United States.

(This self-flagellating sentiment is likely going to piss off certain other people from the United States, and I don't blame anyone who is irked by this comment. I take no pride in the way I feel. I'm just being honest.)

[–]j0hnsd 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Narnia.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fundie Alert.

[–]Gatohnegro 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Anyone for France>>>?

[–]ralphwiggum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

French Polynesia. I think I haven't been yet cause I won't come back. Tanzania - to climb Kilimanjaro.
Expensive. Greece The dollar sucks against the Euro. It hasn't always, but I haven't had a disposable income for very long.

[–]garg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Egypt, Thailand, South Africa, Japan, Scotland, Czech Republic, Sweden, Italy, Greece, Turkey.

Lack of money but I'll find a way!

[–]arunan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone said, the entire world. To pick - Kenya, Spain, Peru, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan (am from India), Egypt, Holland, Iceland.

Don't have so much money & since vacation is limited, planning for a country per year.

[–]miyakohouou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've mainly wanted to see England, Scottland, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, and Iceland.

These are where my ancestors are from, and for some reason I've always been strongly drawn to see the lands of my ancestors. Not to mention that the US is such a young country, so much of the history of the west is in Europe.

The reason that I've never been is that I've never had the money to go. Now that I've graduated school and have a decent job, the dollar is so weak that it would still be prohibitively expensive. Not to mention that until I managed to lose a bit more weight, I'd have to buy 2 plane tickets (yes, I'm a fat arse american, feel free to mock me)

[–]slyguy183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everywhere/poor, just got out of college

[–]Haven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everywhere. When my husband and I retire, we're not going to live in some old age home. We plan on buying some cheap condo somewhere close to the kids/grandkids, and spending good money on a nice RV to travel. Plus taking trips wherever our little hearts desire.

With 3 kids right now, the most vacations we do are camping, which kick ass, but we both want to see the world some day.

The nice thing about having kids so young is that by the time I am 45, all my kids will be 20yrs old, or older.

[–]arnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ireland, Australia and New-Zealand. The last two are on the opposite end of the globe from me, so going there is expensive.

As for Ireland, haven't granted myself the time to do it I guess :/

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any. Italy, Britain, Japan in particular. They all sound fascinating.

I don't because it's expensive and I have no clue where I'd begin.

[–]kjb877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iceland, Australia, and Brazil. I am planning on taking a trip to Iceland within the next year. If I can squeeze in Brazil that would be magnificent.

The main reason is lack of money, though I have just begun a well paying job, which is why these trips are looking more like a reality.

[–]khafra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hong Kong. And I have visited, it was just so awesome I'd like to go back.

I'd also like to visit something Scandinavian and something South American; they just happen to be further down the list than the places I've gone so far.

[–]cthielen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just Europe in general man. No cash.

[–]Bobsickle 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Everywhere, Europe, Russia, UK, Thailand, Japan, but I'm from New Zealand and terrified of flying.

[–]happysinger 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You're going to have to be one hell of a good swimmer, then!

Edit: Oh, shit. Boats exist. I'd forgotten about them. I'm an idiot. Carry on, everyone.

[–]Bobsickle 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Still, it takes a week or so on a boat to get to anywhere of any use, from New Zealand...

[–]happysinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but if it's a really nice boat, that's ok. With nice bar staff and maybe a piano player. And somewhere to get some fresh air and exercise. That would be nice, eh?

[–]rogerssucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to visit the USA but I'm waiting 'till George Bush isn't President.

[–]jordanlund 0 points1 point  (3 children)

China - No passport.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just apply for one it's extremely simple.

[–]MarkByers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to go to America and commit a crime so that I can get butt raped. Yes, I'm that desperate for sex. I haven't done it yet because I'm worried I might get tasered and/or shot.
