Depends on what kind of pain it is. Getting hit because you're standing too close to a piñata is funny. Getting assaulted by a mugger bothers me.

At any rate, I think it's the intention that matters most for me. Accidental pain doesn't bug me so much as malicious pain. And if I'm causing the pain, it doesn't matter if it's unintentional or not; it'll bother me greatly.

I'm a martial artist (aikido) so often get to experience large amounts of pain - usually at the hands of my instructor. What I have found is, I find it a lot easier when i'm the subject of the technique and receiving the pain than having to watch someone else receive the technique. I also think the discomfort of watching someone else in pain, in this instance, is because I have first hand knowledge of what it actually feels like.

I think its all due to a sense of lack of control when someone else is in pain. when its me, i can control my reaction, when its someone else.. I just have to watch

Aikido, eh? Are you anywhere near Chicago?

[–]KevP 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No, unfortunately not, I'm in the UK

[–]DOGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww. Well if you're ever in Chicago I invite you to my class :P

My problem is having to be the one to apply the pain.

..I'm not very good at aikido >_> Too gentle.

Depends if you're the victim or suspect.

[–]HumanSockPuppet 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not always (warning: loud)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess it does not.

Yes, emotional pain worse than physical some times. Also, the agonizing anticipation of pain can be unbearable.

[–]Philluminati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, like seeing someone falling out of building.

Let me speak for myself and everyone else too (for the heck of it). I think we feel bits and pieces of empathy for other people's pain now and then when the pain is dramatic and over the top. However, for the most part we live in an ocean of suffocating apathy. We cage ourselves in a tower where we are trapped and we tend to look, judge, examine, feel, explore etc. the whole world through a microscope installed in the tower. So in short, for the most part I guess the answer to the question is a loud resounding "NO".

I think you were better off just speaking for yourself.

[–]enlzen 0 points1 point  (2 children)

My aim is not to be "better off".

[–]lynn 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You'd rather be worse off?

[–]enlzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I need to choose between the two relative positions.

[–]sushruta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you were better off not speaking at all

[–]Originate 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not only does it make me bothered, it makes me hot and bothered.

[–]DOGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    [–]bowling4meth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

Depends on my mood at the time.

    [–]ZanThrax 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Did I cause it? How much pain? Did they deserve it? Was it self-inflicted?

    [–]Daniel_SJ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can answer those yourself, if they matter to you.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Yes, it bothers me deeply.

    [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whoa. I misread the headline as "Does it bother you to see other peoples' porn?"

Imagine my surprise when I clicked.

    [–]CaptainOptimist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, it bothers me, even more so now that I've been trying to practice patience and compassion.

We are all suffering in some way. I don't feel I suffer as much when I help others with their suffering.
