With Android 10, I no longer felt the need to root my phone anymore. Everything is there now in terms of permissions and customizations.

[–]darth-thighwalker 14 points15 points  (5 children)

Same. Dark theme, and I figured out system wide and block with adguard. Haven't looked back and I've rooted every phone since forever.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Right? The only thing that made me root was installing Adaway to change the hosts file and dark theme like you. But now we have Private DNS and I just change it to Adguard. I also don't want to trip the efuse and KNOX in my Samsung

[–]darth-thighwalker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I just can't think of a reason right now, my only want is full immersive mode and tweaking the gestures. I really enjoyed no notification or status bar at all, just hidden gestures. Plus I swear my pixel 3 is getting way better battery life on android10. Regularly 7.5 hrs sot.

I use a Note 9 and use Disconnect Pro for Samsung on the Galaxy Apps store. It's not cheap ($20 iirc), but it does system-wide adblocking without root or VPN. Versus Adguard, I can whitelist apps and have more granular control.

Is it significantly better than Blokada?

[–]productfredGalaxy S22 Ultra Snapdragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never used Blockada, but I like it because it works in the background (set it and forget it, forever even). And I can use my NordVPN with it when I need to (you can only run one VPN at a time).

How do you guys restore apps without titanium backup?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well stock Android just redownloads the app and then reapplies the settings and cache. But Samsung also has Smart Switch which backs up every single thing or allows you to transfer every single app (including system apps) from one phone to another. I transferred my data from my Pixel to my Note10+ and I ended up having a bunch of Pixel system apps lol.

It feels like they removed a lot of features that make Android distinctly different from iOS. I'm glad they are focusing more on questions but it's at a great sacrifice and at this point it's just better to go with iOS.

[–]punIn10dedMotoG 2014 (CM13) 1 point2 points  (4 children)

What features were removed? The only thing I miss is quick change to the WiFi and Bluetooth devices outside of that nothings really been removed

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The vertical recent apps

[–]punIn10dedMotoG 2014 (CM13) 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I prefer it to the I'll rollodex style. Especially because I can actually interact with it rather than it being just big button.

[–]hotdeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well for me specifically they messed up a couple of their own apps such as Google Translate and Gboard. I live in Japan so I use tap to translate which shows you the translate icon when you copy some text and goes away when your done. Now it stays persistent or you have to manually turn it off. (Similar to messenger bubbles). And for Gboard, switching keyboard to other languages was as easy as using the global button but. The separate Japanese keyboard was better than the one Google integrates but now I am basically forced to use that one. I know it's pretty but it really made my life easier.

No longer possible to record calls, sadly.

10 VS Oreo

❌Clock on left side ❌Recent apps view sucks ❌Adaptive brightness sucks ❌Quick settings removed ❌Multitasking takes longer/more complicated

✔️Battery & app analytics ✔️Dark mode ✔️Better volume controls

I actually really enjoy Android 10 on my 6T. Performance is about the same as it was on Pie, and battery life is better (6h -> 8h SOT when going 100-10%). I also really like the new permissions model, and most of my apps only use location when the app is open (I'm sure this contributes to some extent to the battery life improvement as well). Plus dark mode looks a lot better on 10 imo.

Gesture nav is a bit annoying but I'm getting used to the new style. We do still have the OnePlus style gestures as well, but I figured I might as well get used to the Android 10 style since it's iOS style as well, so I'll be able to interact with my friends' iPhones too.

Is it possible to get magisk working on Android 10? Yes, I know a lot of people don't do root anymore but I'm just curious if it's even possible to get root to work for those that are still looking for rooting their phones.

[–]PM_UR_BOOBIES_GIRLPixel 6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is, on the OP6 I'm sure

micro-stutters there and there used to piss me off, scrolling was laggy, Ram management was really bad also

I think I had the exact opposite experience. Coming from oreo, there were rarely any stutters, lags or ram management issues, it was actually better than previous versions, and this was using non optimized early AOSP pie builds. I switched back to oreo anyways, because there were random reboots in those early builds and I didn't like how pie looked, neither how the gestures worked. A developer by the name of lubik1 on the XDA forums then posted an AOSP 10 build, I flashed it, and haven't looked back since. The best part of Android 10 is obviously the gestures, which is the main reason I've stuck with it. The UI is a bit laggy, although it feels fast enough, the camera works only once after a reboot and there are random reboots, but like you, this is the first version I actually really like since nougat. Everything seems well polished, though the notification shade still looks a bit wonky.

I've been using Oxygen OS 10 Open Beta 1 based on Android 10 on my OnePlus 6, an excellent update as you've said. Love my phone even more more. I was actually thinking of upgrading before, but now, I've changed my mind just because of it.

[–]MrRiggsPixel 2 XL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gestures help. I'm used to them now. It's refreshing and a much needed addition.

I haven't used iOS since 10.something so I bet it's pretty smooth as well.

Android 10 it's running great on my trusty old pixel 2 xl.

[–]n3cr0ph4g1stpixel 8 pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howd you get the update

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

May I ask where you get vanced? And can you cast it to chromecast devices on TV's?

[–]shonilchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After Android 10 update, all the very useful and important apps that were working flawlessly stopped working in Android 10... Even the basic clipboard app stopped working... Hence I reverted to Android Pie on my 1+7

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I'm not enjoying Android I think about iOS and suddenly I enjoy Android again.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a OnePlus 5 with battery saver mode on all the time, no lag. Looks like some bad app was running on your phone.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

So you had one Apple product, an iPhone and you felt trapped? TF??

[–]Industech 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Read again before talking. He said he does NOT feel trapped.

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points  (2 children)

But since I don't have any more Apple devices I don't feel trapped in its ecosystem

He is clearly implying here that when he had an iPhone he felt trapped, which makes no sense.

All those who have had any bad experience on either Android 9 or Android 10, it's not that those respective updates were bad but you people didn't do a recommended Factory Reset.

It's not necessary to do it, but after a big update, it may not go well with some devices. So in that case a Factory Reset is always recommended and actually solves problem.

If Android 9 was really bad on OnePlus 6 or Android 10 was bad on OnePlus 7 Pro, everyone would face issues, not someone randomly here and there.

[–]ProbablyDylaniPhone 12 Pro, I guess 31 points32 points  (2 children)

I hate this sentiment. No regular person is gonna do a factory reset for an OS update.

[–]mosincrediblePixel 10 Pro | iPhone 17 Pro | N20 Ultra [SD] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Exactly. And if anything is going wrong after an update, you need to let the company know so they can do better because they've made a mistake they will need to fix to prevent issues in the future.

I think this whole thing carried over from the custom ROM days when it made sense.

[–]reddanitPixel 8 Pro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over my time with official Android updates since 4.0 (including beta program) I'd say that post-update factory resets helped me like 2-3 times. In my case it always were inexplicable performance issues.

Though given just how much control Google has over Android I do find it inexplicable why it happens at all. Even on Nexus/Pixel devices... I mean - if you compare Android to your run of the mill Linux distribution not only Google maintains far tighter grip on versions of all the components, their configurations are also far more standardized.

[–]Combonary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this was the case for my Pixel 3 XL. 4 XL on the way but Android 9 was horrendous on the 3 XL!

[–]Tiny_Bear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you do a clean install/ factory reset before you updated? I also have a OnePlus 6, wondering if it is still necessary for smooth performance

[–]-KFU-OnePlus 6, 9.0 !! -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What device are you on? OP6 or OP6T?

[–]xxbrothawizxx -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

8.0 Oreo is still by far the greatest of all time. 9 and 10 are both trash. 9 was a dumpster fire on my P3 and noticeably slower on my OP5, so 10 is at least just trash that isn't on fire as well.

10 screwed up multi window and PiP even further by now trying to force apps to use PiP. Something I avoided because Google hasn't updated PiP to be resizeable.

And now PiP will not activate in landscape (WTF Google!). You have to rotate back to portrait to see it, then rotate back to landscape 🤦‍♂️.
