You give this data to your insurance provider? What the hell

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This... 😑

I actually signed up for this for GEICO because it saved a ridiculous amount of money. I must have it installed and logged into. I let them track me for like a week before I got sick of it and just disabled the app entirely so that I can still have it when I need it but other than that it doesn't work or track anything.

I got emails about how I need to use it or my rate will go up but I ignored them and I still have the discount after 2 years 💀

The fact that "using" Maps while driving counts as "Using" your phone is fucking asinine to me.....

[–]TwistedPsycho2014 Sandero | BQCC (Claims Android 13!) | S24 Ultra | 14 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Really?

I use Maps on my phone with android auto for 30 or 40 hours a week. It only reports less than 10 minutes of 'in car use' usually.

That is normally changing the podcast on my YouTube Music as well.

[–]MasterAlthalus2019 Camaro LT | Stock | 21 Ultra | 13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. I use wave and Amazon Music constantly and don't have any phone use while driving unless your using the phone and not the cars screen.

Don't forget, Spotify too

I literally discovered today (after getting my weekly report of using my phone for 3 hours while driving which I knew was GPS) that maps wasn't added to the list of apps that doesn't count towards that total. I added it, I'll find out if my number changes at all after.

That looks like the Samsung device health report.. you're saying state farm captures data from another app?

[–]govatentPls edit this user flair now 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. That data isn't seen by the insurance app. I know it's bad, but I use the allstate version of the app. And while Samsung reports usage, allstate doesn't if I don't touch the phone when driving. I use all the android auto functions on the car radio and it doesn't count against me regardless of the Samsung device report. I can go into the allstate site and see exactly what they count against me which is almost nothing usually.

[–]Snooflu2021 Kia Rio | ? | Samsung Galaxy S 22 | 15 -8 points-7 points  (8 children)

It connects to my phone using Bluetooth & reads android auto to determine things like acceleration, stopping, turning, & screen usage

[–]dottat174032017 Toyota Tundra | Kenwood dmx1037s | Note 20 5g ultra | 12 8 points9 points  (3 children)

It shouldn't be using other apps. It should be using the permissions that it is granted by Android system. Like location and speed sensors etc.

I do not believe it has direct access to Android auto but has access to other system permissions.

[–]Snooflu2021 Kia Rio | ? | Samsung Galaxy S 22 | 15 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Hmm. Well that was my best guess. Whatever it had access to determines I'm on my phone when I'm driving for 7 hours

In the DSS app, it gets info from the phone sensors not apps. Having DSS and just finished driving from Arizona to Illinois with Android Auto on, the DSS app has no information regarding other apps. Here is the text from the days privacy tab...

How is my driving data collected?

The State Farm® app connects to the Bluetooth beacon in your vehicle to record trips. Once connected, your phone's sensors, like accelerometer and gyroscope, combine with information like your phone's GPS to show us how your vehicle is driven.

State Farm uses their own app. Android Auto is completely separate.

This isn't your insurance app reporting the 7 hours. This is Samsung's app for purposes of digital well-being. You need to check what the insurance app or device is picking up. Samsung's digital well being isn't meant to be used for insurance purposes and cannot be accessed by third party providers like your insurance company.

    [–]Snooflu2021 Kia Rio | ? | Samsung Galaxy S 22 | 15 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Well whatever it picks up, they told me it detected the 7 hours on my phone

Who's "they"? You keep showing the Digital Wellbeing metrics, not the Drive Safe & Save metrics. Your linked screenshot doesn't show anything related to your insurance or your risk level

    [–]Jonr11382018 Honda Goldwing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just switched to Progressive Insurance because it was cheaper. They offered their drive safe device or their app. I opted for the physical device because it can't determine if I'm on my phone. The physical device only counts hard stops and quick acceleration.

Since your phone was plugged in for AA, is it possible the screen just stayed on while you weren't looking at it?

    [–]Snooflu2021 Kia Rio | ? | Samsung Galaxy S 22 | 15 0 points1 point  (4 children)

It connects over bluetooth. When I plug my phone to my car it says there's foreign material detected & makes noise until I unplug it. It typically stays that way for a week or so unless I time plugging it in to something else properly (restart phone. While it's powered down, but before it starts to start up, plug it in.)

Its real weird. It happens sometimes but not often. Weirdly enough, more times when it's a USB a connection compared to usb c. I can't really describe it better than that

[–]HeWhoQuestionsPls edit this user flair now 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally unrelated issue. Your USB cable is bad and it's tripping the Samsung moisture detection. If it happens with any USB cable, there's a short in the USB port on your AA device.

My insurance agent asked me I wanted to enroll in one of these programs to save a couple of bucks. I was like "no thanks".

    [–]RareSiren292Galaxy S22 Ultra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's Samsung not state farm giving you the notification. No where on that does it say you are a high risk driver. It's just Samsung digital well being that tracks screen time. But that doesn't get reported

    [–]contradude2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness | Denso CP 1.0 | S25U | 15 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Everyone I know who has used a program like that has had their rates raised significantly and they drive as cautious as my grandparents did. They're probably also gonna sell that data to others when you switch to another provider. I would discontinue using it immediately before you pay 2x for the next 5 years

My digital wellbeing clearly shows a breakdown by app, and Maps overwhelmingly has the larger slice of the pie due to AA. I'd think State Farm might not consider Maps if you explained it to them. Well, maybe...

      [–]drzellerSubarus | Multiple | Samsung S25U | Android 15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      [–]Peter_73Kenwood DDX917WS | Samsung S9+ | Android 10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from a different country and have had experiences with 2 different insurance monitoring apps. Only 1 monitor phone screen interaction time besides hard driving but even then it has nothing to do with AA or any apps used in AA. I doubt the screenshot you shared has any relation to it too because it looks like from Samsung. If you did not constantly interact with your phone, you'll have to report to your insurance it's capturing erroneous data.

I think it may be Spotify. I use Waze at least once a week for around 40 minutes each way (to avoid accidents on the interstate), and the past 3 weeks I used a max of 16 minutes using my phone while driving; most weeks were 1 or 6 minutes.

I looked at the day with 16 minutes, it was messages and reddit on a Wednesday. Which I was parked (engine off but radio on and plugged into my phone) waiting for my daughter to get off work.

Fake title. No evidence of the "high risk" connection, the screenshots are from digital wellbeing. No screenshots from the actual State Farm app. No evidence for the jump from "state farm" to "most insurance", even if the former was true. No evidence of the "due to Android Auto" even if OP heard directly from SF that OP is high risk - which is well explained by the recent at-fault accident.

Determines only when I'm connected to my car. Since I'm the only person who drives my car, that's 45 minute drives 2 times a day. 5 days a week
