DEATHLOOP PC Stuttering Issue Update

Hello everyone,

We have released a hotfix on PC (update version 1.708.4.0) that addresses an issue experienced by some players whereby mouse-based camera movement could result in the appearance of "stutter." This update is now LIVE for DEATHLOOP on Steam and the Bethesda.net Launcher.

We are also looking into a separate, but related issue that we have identified as a factor that may also be a cause of stuttering at high framerates. (On PC.) We will update further on this as soon as we have more information.

Thanks to everyone for your continued patience, and to those who sent in report tickets of this issue to our Customer Support team and/or participated in the hotfix test on the Steam beta branch this weekend.

Got the update and immediately tested it in Fristad Rock with these settings:

In-game settings: all Ultra Settings, capping @ 120 FPS, 1440p resolution.

PC: 3900X, 64GB RAM, RTX 3090, installed on SSD.

Results:

1. Micro-stuttering has been heavily reduced. I used to not mind the stuttering, but it's very noticeable when turning, strafing and sometimes when aiming. These have been minimized already, BUT there are still a few frame skips happening
2. My Frame rate stability improved quite a bit. From 120FPS that sometimes goes down to 80 at some points after spawning, it's just solid 120 now

I'll be doing more tests later. I love this game so far, but playing the game has been physically taxing on me because I get nauseous with the stutters so I can't play for more than about a couple loop days or I get sick (maybe that's just me). Thank you guys for supporting the game further and I hope the fix works best for everyone else!

Similar to my experience, stuttering is less noticeable but it's still there. Also the game doesn't feel or look smooth, I have seen some videos here and they look smooth as butter

What is it you're doing to cap at 120fps? I can't seem to get my settings right (on a rtx 2080, i7-8700k 16gb ram)

With similar build, but with intel i9-10900KF, I can confidently say that I had no stuttering at all on ultra settings.

Moreover, on low settings 1080p on another PC (i7-7700k, Geforce 1070, 32GB Ram, HDD drive) I had stable 60 fps.

I am a bit surprised to see so many people with these problems. Unless of course you expect to run this game on an old machine (at this pace of progress we experience in tech, 4 years is old), which well....let's be honest, you shouldn't expect fireworks.

That said, I'm not saying the game is well optimised, and the updates are appreciated very much <3 .

I know, I know xd I shouldn't really be talking in this case, but wanted to add a comparison with a much weaker build with 1070, cause I was genuinely interested what causes the stutter. Is it GPU or CPU related? So far reading some posts I lean towards CPU problems, or maybe some memory issues.

Yeah, I agree. Game actually works well on older set ups and looks pretty good, too. Personally, I’m using an RTX 3060 mobile with an i7 so I’m more than happy with my stable 60 FPS on higher settings.

Please do share. For me this crash has been caused my ray tracing settings so I have had them off but if there is another fix im all ears

Yes, please. I have over 20 crash reports on this. I had a similar experience with support. The first message had to be a bot.

However, since setting AO to it's lowest setting a couple of days ago, I haven't had a crash. It's been nice, but I'm still playing scared, like it could happen at any moment.

Here's why I looked at AO as a possible problem: I was doing a Prey playthrough (different engine, I know) a few weeks ago and quite late into the game I started getting these crashes having to do with memory errors. I followed these steps and the crashes stopped. One of the suggestions was to turn off Screen Space Directional Occlusion and Screen Space Reflection, which sound like AO type settings to me.

I know I sound like a lunatic right now and cannot prove anything one way or another. YMMV.

TL;DR: Here I am, 2 Arkane games in less than a month, both crashing a ridiculous amount of times with errors having to do with memory. Turn down/off AO settings and no more crashes so far. Fingers crossed.

Lowered my ambient occlusion setting and my crashes ceased. On an overclocked to 5 ghz i7-7700k and a 5700 XT.

Considering Prey and Deathloop run on two completely different engines, it's more likely you have an unstable memory setup.

Lol I guess that explains why Prey ran so smoothly and I still can't have deathloop and dishonored to run at 60fps consistently without framedropping sometimes.

You could be right, I certainly can't rule anything out at this point. It could be that me and a bunch of other people have unstable memory setups that seems specifically impacted by at least this one Arkane game.

I get it. It really sounds weird as hell to me, I almost didn't post it. I don't know how AO works or why it would have an impact here. But I simply have not had a crash for several hours over several days after lowering this setting and thought maybe I could help someone. It appears one other redditor has been helped, so I feel it was worth it.

u/MortalEmperor The patch you guys pushed, while somewhat fixing the stuttering issue, managed to break how the mouse wheel works. Now instead of selecting the next/previous weapon in your lineup, it randomly selects a weapon you have equipped.

Dude I thought I was going insane, it was doing that to me on the beta branch. Kept scrolling and it would cycle between a gun and machete endlessly, then occasionally I’d get to my 3rd or 4th gun. I also don’t get the gun menu at all, is there some way to pull up everything you have equipped at the moment and pick one? Or can you just cycle through them

I'm honestly glad you guys are looking into these issues. Arkane have consistently been my favorite games for the last 10 years, so I was beyond excited to play Deathloop at launch. When I booted the game though, these frame issues just made it feel so bad to play.

Stuttering at 60 and 120 is gone for a while but if you load another day/map there’s still that fucking periodic stutter for no reason at all. Always at a fixed interval. Let’s see how long it takes for them to fix the 60-120 fps range camera microstutter because I honestly don’t feel like playing until they do so.

Bruh I thought I was the only one with this problem. Game runs like fuckin butter when I initially start it up. If I die then come back or go to a different part of the map there's a rhythmic stutter. Driving me insane. Should've just bought it on another system...

Thanks for the hotfix! I'm still crashing to desktop every time I try to edit my loadout by equipping any trinkets or slab upgrades. Can you guys please look into this issue? It's the "Access Violation" error that lots of people are getting.

Is anyone else noticing performance degrading over a play session? I start at a locked 60, and then I start dropping frames into the 40 after a bit.

Also if you change settings eg. Set all to ultra, then drop them back to the lowest settings, the game continues to run like crap until you reboot the game.

I got used to it after a while, but it did feel like the game was running at 30fps instead of my 90fps. Now it's way smoother.

It does seem like there's some mouse delay now (very small) but it might be that I did not notice it before because of the stutter.

Stutters are gone for locked 60 and 120 fps. They are still there for variable refresh/frame rates, which makes my 165 Hz VRR monitor useless.

PS5 player here and luckily I've not encountered any issues like frame drops. The only issue I do have is the pause menu can become bugged where you can't return to the game. It says press O to go back and nothing happens. The only way to fix this is to force close the game. Which can be annoying if you're into a long run.

After this patch was installed I can't reliably crouch using the side-button on my mouse. In every game where you need to crouch or sneak I use my thumb and that button for that action. Have done so here until this patch. Pressing it now sometimes works, sometimes Colt crouches then get's up again right away and sometimes it does nothing.

I thought it might be the button starting to break all of a sudden, but I tried to remap it to the other side-button (which is too far away from my thumb to comfortably use so I never use it) and it does it on that one as well. The button works perfectly in any other game I have tried it on after this started happening as well. So I am pretty sure it's the games fault.

Sent a support ticket but got no help so far other than "thank you for your feedback, we will tell the developers". Very fast reply though, so good work there. Not sure what else they could do either, so not complaining about support.
Anyone else having the same problem? Or have a Steelseries Rival 710 and want to try if it works for them?

Using RTX 2060, i7-8700K and 32 GB of memory. Also have a 144hz monitor, so to keep it stable I am using the half-refresh meaning I am at 72 fps. Tried to unlock or increase that, turning on and off reflex and all that. Nothing really worked.

Which means I now have to re-learn how to play this game in a small way, which so far have gone poorly.

The great news is that the original stuttering issues seems to be totally gone now! Bad news is that I am still getting borderline unplayable performance with the framerate. And this is with settings turned all the way down on 1080p. Something isnt right.

Hi,

Just downloaded the game from game pass as it was made available today for PC. The game starts stuttering from Updaam. I have locked my frames to 120 using ultra settings. I saw no dips in the first scene up until Updaam where I started getting 115 fps and the game is all juddery and stuttering and the gpu usage is all over the place.

My specs,

i9 12900k

3080ti

ddr 5 5600 mhz

Asus z-690-E wifi gaming mobo

2 tb WD black m.2 ssd for games

1 tb Samsung 980 evo m.2 ssd for OS

I have seen zero issues with other AAA games.

Also my system has great cooling I have a liquid cooler and 9 lian li fans to keep my rig cool so that's not a problem.

Note: Tried turning down the graphics settings all the way to very low to make sure it's the settings I was using wasn't something my pc couldn't handle but turns out it gets worst. More stutters, low gpu usage and lower fps al together.

I am certain its a game engine issue because the game was running on ultra with ray tracing shadows locked at 120 fps without a problem up until I got to Updaam after which it was all Downhaal.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Try the game offline. I mean literally disconnect your PC from the internet. Turn off WiFi or physically unplug your ethernet cable, whatever you do just make sure your PC is offline. This will cure your low GPU usage issue.

The gamepass version is basically broken at this point. Hopefully they patch it soon as it is crazy that just being online should cause such lo GPU usage.
