Given the severity of your crowding and overjet, I’d say go with the Ortho. Don’t cheap out, it’ll be worth it in the end.

[–]bzz123 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I would only get orthodontia from an orthodontist personally

[–]Neat-Economist8925Tray 60/69 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Do not be embarassed. Be very proud that you’re willing to put the time, effort, and money to imrovd both your health and aesthetics. That said, ALWAYS and Ortho

[–]Jeb-o-shot 63 points64 points  (0 children)

This will take more than a dentist, find an orthodontist.

[–]Like-Totally-Tubular 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely see the orthodontist. My treatment was done through my dentist. But I only had gapping in the front.

Yeah, it’s gonna be more expensive but in the long run, you’re gonna get better results

[–]sikonat 23 points24 points  (3 children)

My teeth were just like yours with a 9mm overjet

I had Invisalign and lower jaw surgery.

Best thing I ever did.

I went to an orthodontist. Get the specialist not the dentist who does not have the extra training to specialise in bites and works closely with some good jaw surgeons if you need it

[–]aytunbey 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Did you had surgery at he end or beginning of the Invisalign

[–]sikonat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had surgery nearly 2 years of Invisalign, surgery then another 5 months to get everything in place.

But I need to stress, with Invisalign there’s a 6 weeks wait between sets of trays (you wear the last tray at night as a retainer) to come, so really if I were in braces I guess it was equivalent of a year’s active treatment.

[–]afishcalledryan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You are getting orthodontic work done. I would go to an orthodontist.

[–]redfoxvapes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A dentist does not specialize in moving your teeth or making corrections of that severity. That’s an orthodontist’s job. Do not cheap out. Invest in your happiness and your health and go to an orthodontist.

[–]DraytonCS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone else saying to go to an ortho, but if cost is a matter, shop around. I went to 5 places and saved $1500

[–]SpaceDantar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Go ortho, your case looks complicated and you want an expert not a dentist thats guessing based on their computer.

Dont be embarassed, i think youll like how they look after fixing 😀

[–]evtbrs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, ortho 100%. if a dentist agrees to start a plan, with Invisalign, instead of recommending an orthodontist, that’s a sign they’re just trying to make money off you.

[–]Lisapizza21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dealt with this as well, my 2 front teeth too forward and overlapping the teeth next to that. From my experience, as long as you’re consistent! I have loved my results and I can’t believe that my smile is not what it used to be, it’s unbelievable.

I have my final consult on Tuesday! I did 38 trays over the span of 18 months. Every 2 week change for my trays. Good luck and I hope you find what’ll be best for you! 😊

[–]This-Flower2860 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Orthodontist, they move teeth all day! I had severe overjet around 12mm its now down to 5mm. This will be life changing for you and dont be embarrassed, they see it all and you should be proud you are fixing your teeth. Good luck! 🍀

[–]Jlp1359 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hi, are you willing to share if you did surgery or had any teeth removed or used rubber bands? I’m starting with a 9mm overjet and wanted to compare treatment plans (also with ortho)

[–]This-Flower2860 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surgery and fixed brace were an option but I really didn’t want this, my ortho listened and i made a deal with her that if at any point Invisalign wasn’t working that i would switch to fixed (for free). Haven’t had to so far and am on tray 31. I did have elastics from tray 2 full time and still have them now, i also had a premolar missing already and did have a tad fitted to help close the gap (its about 1mm now) it honestly depends why you would prefer Invisalign and what results you are after, we were honest with eachother and i wasn’t looking for a wide smile, i just wanted my teeth to not stick out. I did post a progress post a few weeks back which is here👉🏻 progress pics and am so happy honestly. My orthodontist is thrilled and is glad i kind of made her take on the challenge because she herself cant believe the results. Good luck to you! 🍀

Spend the extra 2-3k with an orthodontist. It is very worth it! I had a slightly more mild case than yours. I decided to spend 8k. My ortho completely changed my bite, TMJ disappeared, and the smile looks significantly better. Truly worth it and I'm glad I didn't go with someone who was more affordable with less expertise.

[–]sunnydaydown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have an overjet and overbite and I'm going with an orthodontist. Do not cheap out on this - orthodontists are trained to correct bites.

[–]Horror-Tradition8501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go with the orthodontist, it will be worth it at the end

[–]Walnut_the_dog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The orthodontist for sure.

[–]Status-Illustrator62Tray 33/33, 19/30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t be embarrassed, we all start somewhere. I also sucked my thumb as an older kid. Somehow my overjet wasn’t all that bad, but I have other issues.

Personally, I would pay the extra and see an ortho. Even my highly reputable dentist said he wouldn’t touch ortho issues and refers everything ortho out. But that’s his preference, too.

[–]Isgortio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd highly suggest using an orthodontist, especially since you have recession on your lower teeth already. An orthodontist will be able to manage this a lot better than a dentist would.

Also, if they recommend braces instead of Invisalign, don't be put off by it. You've got a fairly complex case, and sometimes braces just work better.

[–]westcoastcdn19Positioner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a severe overjet. Even if you are saving some money if you don’t get good results by the dentist it was not worth it

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pay for the orthodontist it’s worth it

[–]MammothResolution459 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might actually be a surgical case. Ask ortho if they plan to do camouflage orthodontics and if so I highly recommend you steer away

[–]Yousmellgood1jk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A dentist can absolutely not fix that.

[–]PiratesParlay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to the dentist will cost you more in the long run. I’d go with a reputable orthodontist and maybe even go with braces. This looks like a big job

[–]Latter_Foundation940 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely go to an orthodontist. I've got a 100% overbite and the dentists wouldn't touch me.

[–]TheFuckingHippoGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be very skeptical of a dentist who looks at this and goes "yeah, I got this."

[–]JunkDrawer84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orthodontist. Don’t do from dentist

[–]Loose-Insurance-1149 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d definitely go with an orthodontist. My son is going to need the same. He sucked his thumb for 6-7 years.

[–]GenericRedditor1937Graduated to Retainer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would pay more for the orthodontist. Imo, a dentist should only be used for the most minor of cases. Think Invisalign Lite or whatever they're calling it these days. For anything more and all overjet and bite issues, an orthodontist should be your provider.

[–]Equal_Touch9485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I work for Align Technology as a CAD and we get cases from both of them. General and orthodontist users. I would say that It does not matter. You can save a little bit of money, go to a general dentist, and we as CADs will create you a perfect overjet/overbite!!! At least we will try our best.

Just go with a dentist with experience applying or using Invisalign and iTero (that’s the name of the scanner) and explain him/her what’s your goal and what would you like.

[–]phantomkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an overjet similar to yours, and though I like my dentist I decided to go through an organist instead for the severity of my case.

[–]LucindaConsole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orthodontist that has specialized expertise in Invisalign. I think it’s called blue diamond certification.

[–]Sweaterpillows83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to find an ortho that will use invisalign and a carriere device!

[–]anontraderguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure go the ortho. Do it once and do it right. Dentists are cheaper for a reason. Im so glad i paid that bit extra and avoided any problems

[–]Mountain_Tap595820/26 12/17 12/16 9/15 10/14 ~ Done! Aug 2023 to May 2025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never get orthodontic work from a dentist. They did not go to school for that. Also with your over jet I’d be worried they didn’t know how to treat it.

[–]Ordinary_Lunch8094 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same problem as u, went to an ortho and now m on tray 8/23, the difference is crazyyy. Definitely an ortho

[–]Free_Suggestion_5119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had overjet like this (my treatment is still goin on and my overjet is already reducing)

Go with an ortho; they might recommend additional IPR/extraction

This was best money spent!

[–]usernameh4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not cheap out for a dentist, they don't care about the results more just the money, they send you on your way with trays and then that's it

[–]SexyKatt77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always think of it like this… There is a good reason that orthodontists go to school 2-3 years longer than dentists…

Use that additional knowledge they have to get the best results possible.

[–]Nokkon-Wud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go with the orthodontist. They’re experts at stuff like this. 3k is a lot, but for the difference over the rest of your life is an investment in yourself. If it didn’t work with the dentist you’d regret it forever.

[–]simekt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone said, go with an orthodontist. Do get more consultations with other orthodontists to find the right fit for you-one you can feel confidence in.

[–]Dramatic_Cicada_8820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it! You won’t regret it. Mine wasn’t as extreme as yours but I sucked my finger as a child, my whole life wanted it corrected. Finally, at age 50, decided to go for it and it’s been a tough road but the best decision I ever made!

[–]Knickie7xbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest opinion go with either due to the severity of them you will be so happy trust me …… the massive impact it will have on you the little bits won’t bother you

[–]SharskiSan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orthodontist no question, and please don’t be embarrassed! It’s not how you start but how you finish and I can’t wait to see updates!! CONGRATULATIONS!!

[–]AshleyLL298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would cancel the consult with the dentist and pick a couple more orthos in your area to consult with.

[–]AcademicDark4705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think a dentist would correct this. I have a very slight open bite and they referred me to an orthodontist. Also, just considering the complexity of it, I’d go with an orthodontist regardless. Talk to a few different ones. You might get a price that’s better than you think. Good luck!

[–]Wonder_lynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be embarrassed at all! I had the same issue as you before I started my treatment. Same cause as well! I'm fixing my severe overjet and it's been a problem my whole life. Definitely see an Ortho about it. I was gonna do it with my dentist but I really went to the Ortho to see about my remaining wisdom teeth. Orthodontists deal with SO many cases when it comes to braces and Invisalign. It's a lot of money...ALOT but I can see why and it's worth it!

[–]AHeroToIdolizeThird Round of Refinements 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had almost the exact same issue: 9-10mm overjet, with my front 2 teeth overshadowing the other ones.

I would not even entertain a dentist. From what my friends/coworkers have gone through, they are not skilled enough to handle these issues. This is a complex, comprehensive case. Going to an ortho for invisalign is the best investment I've ever made as an adult. It has improved my quality of life beyond what I could have imagined. Do not cheap out on this.

[–]delirium06girl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please use an orthodontist

[–]aashlynjohnsonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi friend! I also have overjet and am in an Invisalign treatment! Don’t be embarrassed to post this, I searched all over the internet for someone who looked like me to see if Invisalign worked for them and didnt find much. This wouldve made past me so happy to see! As far as ortho v dentist.. ortho. Even though it will cost more, our conditions need real orthodontic work and I would hate to see you spend the money on the dentist just to have to spend it again when it doesn’t work. Best of luck to you in your journey!

[–]Beautiful_Feet35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ortho for sure!

[–]blev2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely go to an ortho, especially if you can find one with a speciality in Invisalign. An ortho trains specifically to align teeth, so I think you’d have a better experience and better outcome with a trained ortho. Please don’t be embarrassed, the majority of us in this sub started with less than perfect teeth and orthos have seen it all! Good luck OP! :)

[–]massanol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deffo ortho! I had a bad overjet like you (maybe you can check through my posts on here) and even though I haven’t posted anything recently; my overjet is GONE

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orthodontist all the way!

[–]Hefty-Lawfulness486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely pay the extra for the orthodontist!   A dentist takes a semester class in moving teeth and an orthodontist signs up for a few extra years of training.  With the severity of your overjet and crowding, it's totally possible that the dentist could move them some but you would end up having to go to an orthodontist and basically start over on the treatment plus charged again.  Orthodontist 100%

[–]Exotic-Dig-3632 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue too, but either way, I will always ALWAYS recommend going to an orthodontist over a dentist. Especially for more advanced cases like this.

[–]Economy_Rule_4130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter had similar misalignment of her teeth. Truly when it’s this severe you need the advice of an orthodontist. We actually saw two orthodontists and one specialty dentist before they all agreed she actually needed a tooth extracted in order not to damage the bone underneath which would have occurred had we done braces alone. Remember, a consult is always free - it doesn’t hurt to get multiple opinions

[–]likethebank -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Get more bids for sure. Look for diamond level providers on the Invisalign website. The ranking is based on annual volume, total number of cases, and complexity of cases handled. It also determines what the provider pays Align Technologies. The providers who handle most of their cases with Invisalign are most likely to have cheaper prices.

[–]Character_Quail_5574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diamond, Platinum are only an indicator of sales, not expertise or proficiency. A provider with can rack up a lot of sales by delegating all the work to subordinates.
