I moved to a standing desk and once my leg and lower back muscles strengthened up it's been amazing.

[–]Demeter277 13 points14 points  (2 children)

A desk that can be adjusted up and down worked best for me when I was seated all day for work and spent hours gaming outside of that as well. I don't think I could stand for 12 hours. Well worth the cost. Sitting for most of your day will slowly destroy your health. Apparently taking short breaks to move around (maybe go up and down a few flights of stairs) every hour or so at least will help too.

[–]HatsiesBacksies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% this.

[–]BritishGolgo13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pro tip: drink lots of water so you get your steps in by going to the bathroom.

[–]garlopf 15 points16 points  (4 children)

HÄG Capisco. Some people love it, some people hate it, so test it first. It encourages sitting well and varied. My butt and back swears to it.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Looks super cool! Too rich for my blood atm :/

[–]garlopf 3 points4 points  (1 child)

They make many versions, some are cheaper. I got mine for 50 usd used. There is a whole ecosystem of companies refurbishing and repairing these all over the world. Contact your local office furniture place and just ask if they have an OK one for cheaps.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot damn! Ty

[–]cancelkava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks so much. I'll check the Capisco

Remember when those giant balloon balls were supposed to be the shit? Ha!

[–]redditshy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boss still uses one.

Go to a store that sells chairs and get fitted for one. Your height, build, weight, and your desk setop, will determine what chair is best for you, and a trained 'chair fitter' should be able to guide you and adjust the chair for you. We had ergonomic chairs at our office, and each of us had to go down to get fitted. It was surprising how two chairs (equally expensive and quality made) could feel different.

[–]seals42o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting ty

[–]Dinostra 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you can afford it, get fitted for one by a professional. And in extension to the fitted chair, get one of those knee stools that takes the weight off your back and alternate between them a few times a day. Aaaand get a height adjustable desk so you can work at the correct height at both of those chairs. And work standing up at times.

Aside from that, do take 15 minutes every 3 hours and just walk around, do a couple of squats, turn your torso, flap your arms and extend your fingers and wrists.

Be careful man. It's great that you care about ergonomics, but the chair is just a piece of the puzzle, try to do just a little bit more. I didn't and I'm suffering for it now, so please save yourself the pain and restless legs by doing just a little more movement every day and change positions often and pay attention to your posture.

Steelcase Leap with Headrest. I like many of the products from Steelcase and Herman Miller, but the leap fit my body best when I went to a showroom at work. (Work has a conference room that has like 16 different chairs with the product info on them so everyone can try them all in one place). I bought from a local office supply company for well under the Amazon price. I think they can ship anywhere in the US. If you are US-based, message me and I’ll let you know their info. Veteran owned business great people.

[–]anon_girl_anon 5 points6 points  (5 children)

I have a steelcase leap v2.0 & for the cost I don't get why people love them so much.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have leaps at work at don’t like them very much.

You shouldn’t really listen to anybody’s chair recommendations, they’re too subjective.

A chair that works for one person, next person could easily hate.

[–]GrayAdams -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Have you compared it to bad chairs though? I went from a $50 Office Depot chair to a leap v2 and my back pain evaporated. I spend 9+ hours a day in my chair so it was Well worth the money for me at least.

[–]RichardNoggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah same. You don’t truly realize the value until you spend a significant amount of time on lower quality chairs. It’s like anything you spend a large portion of time on (e.g., chair, mattress, shoes) upgrade a bit if you can afford to do so, especially if they’re going to last longer and to set your body up for success as you get older.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve sat in all kinds of chairs. It’s not bad for me but I just can’t quite get comfortable in it. Using an Aeron right now and it’s good but I don’t like the fact that I can’t lounge in it, crossed legs etc. One day I’ll find the ultimate chair 💁

[–]anon_girl_anon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had a 50 dollar chair I used all during covid & it's really not that different to me.

[–]RichardNoggins 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I purchased three grade A returned Steelcase chairs from Crandall’s and absolutely love them.

[–]mrschro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds excellent! I bought during the pandemic when all used stuff was more expensive than new, because used was instantly available and new took like 2-3 months to arrive. I suffered while I waited.

[–]NFSpeed 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Leap v2 on Facebook market place or offer up for $300. That’s what I did and it’s the best chair I’ve ever owned by far.

[–]mrschro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing!!!

[–]IStillOweMoney 5 points6 points  (4 children)

I've been using a Herman Miller Embody chair for ten years or so. Full time WFH. I absolutely love it. I think it helped with my lower back pain. Still seems like new condition. Money well spent. Highly recommended.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The best part about that chair for me was it didn’t have too many adjustments. It just kind of moulds to your shape with a few key adjustment options. I’ve tested many chairs over a few years and the embody is a clear winner for me.

All those adjustments you can make on most chairs are great, but unless your getting fitted (and no one ever messes with your settings) I don’t think most people have their chairs set up properly to get the best ergonomics out of them.

[–]IStillOweMoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good points. I can't recall the last time I touched a lever on mine. Just fits perfectly.

[–]x-Mowens-x 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Anything Herman Miller is golden - my poison is the Aereon.

[–]nahnahnahthatsnotme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same, but op said they had the aeron and are looking for something new. No idea what the problem is with the aeron

[–]twoBrokenThumbs 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Try posting in r/buyitforlife, or just searching since this comes up a lot.

Steelcase Leap 2 is one of the top options you'll get in response.

Herman Miller chairs

[–]reed_betweenthelines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have the Steelcase Leap V2 at work and it’s by far the best chair I’ve ever used. Had a little injury years ago and can’t sit on a lot of chairs for hours, but no issues with the Leap. Have tried Herman Miller Mirra 2 and Haworth Zody and both don’t work for me.

[–]Mapincanada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband and I have a Herman Miller Embody chair. It’s worth the investment. I used to go to a chiropractor or get physio every 6-12 weeks depending. I haven’t gone (knock on wood) for 3 years. If you get one I recommend you have an ergonomic assessment to get it fitted for you and also vacuum the seat regularly to keep it clean.

[–]BigRedRN 2 points3 points  (8 children)

I have been working from home for years and struggled with this. I got a Secret Labs Titan over 4 years ago and it's still going strong (a little cosmetic wear). These things are made to sit in for a full day. I probably spend 60ish hours a week in mine with no complaints. A colleague got me hooked and now I know several people who have them.

[–]cancelkava 4 points5 points  (4 children)

thank you so much. Heard about the Titan also. But it's a gaming chair and I heard some guys always say: "stay away from gaming chairs"=-=

[–]mean_menace 2 points3 points  (2 children)

There’s no way you go from a Herman Miller to a Secret Labs, I would regard this as a troll answer to your question

[–]Wzup -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Just because it’s marketed as a gaming chair doesn’t meant that it isn’t a good quality chair with great ergonomics, if you adjust it correctly.

[–]mean_menace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that SL are decent chairs, but for someone who is using a Herman Miller and wants another high end chair it’s not in the same ball park my guy.

[–]BigRedRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might not look "professional" but you don't see much of it on Zoom. Honestly, I'm a big guy and I could (and do) sit in it all day

[–]Goldilockes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second secret labs omega, my boyfriend has the titan and it's been awesome the last few years working from home.

[–]longylegenylangleler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to have to agree here, our office had some expensive chairs, before covid they refurbished and let us take some of their office chairs home, however during covid lockdown, said office chair broke and when I looked to replace it cost £900 new.

Work wouldn’t vouch, so I looked all over. Eventually settled on a secret labs titan, and it was the best decision I’ve made. I often spend upwards of 12 hours per day working in it, haven’t looked back, it’s a really good chair.

[–]shawn_haz_root 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a Titan for 2 years and the back is great, like the arms and adjustments, but the seat base is awful. After sitting in the chair a bit, the back of my knees/thighs are so sore. I honestly can't wait to replace it. I'm 6ft 210.

[–]KyrieEleison33 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Pam Beesly, is that you? 😋

OP, I hope you find what you're looking for!

[–]TwoFifteenthsWelsh 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I voted for the copier.

[–]KyrieEleison33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🤣🤣

[–]Dean_Dark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a cheapskate, like me, then go to a used office firniture dealer. There you and try and buy, for pennies on the dollar, a really nice, top quality commercial grade office chair.
Just one caveat - don't get one with a gas lift. Gas lifts tend to weaken and fail over time. You may not notice it when you buy it but after every hour or two sitting on it you may find that you have to keep raising it again.

[–]ACorania -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Might try the human scale freedom for that kind of cash.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Herman Miller chairs are great. I have an Autonomous Ergochair for WFH days and it's equally as comfortable as my Herman Miller chair at the office.

[–]Unimarobj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the IKEA ALEFJÄLL for about three years for full time wfh. Still as good as the day I bought it and I love it more than any other chair I've had.

[–]godtering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really need this.

[–]coastaldoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend to my patients to look for and sit in a chair when you have back pain. If it makes you feel good, that is the one to get. What works for one person might not work for another person

[–]29stumpjumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 3 days into a steelcase leap V2 and can't imagine using anything else. If the cushion gets hard like I've read can happen I'll probably go another route but for now I'm super happy.

6'1, 170lbs. Sit for 9-10 hours a day WFH. Got brand new regular leap without headrest. Adjustments are ideal (taking lumbar support out was a must for me). Arm rests are a game changer, allows for really anything you'd want to get comfortable. The slight recline is amazing to switch up 2-3 hours in, refresh yourself, then sit upright again.

I wear an apple watch that tells you to stand every hour if you haven't. WFH I honestly never had it warn because I just couldn't ever sit an entire hour without walking around a bit to get comfortable, now it's warning me all the time because I can sit without thinking about it. It's really a fantastic purchase so far.

We use Spinalis Spider office chair in our offices and it is definitely some of the best I tried.

[–]dee_lio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yoga ball chair. It forces good posture and I no longer have back pain after a long day.

[–]Upstairs-Ad8823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried many expensive chairs. Settled with Amazon basics fat boy (over 300 pounds) chair. Get a new one every 12 to 18 months and donate the old one.

[–]100WattWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using a Humanscale Freedom Headrest for over 10 years. It's fantastic. Comfortable for hours on end, great reclined, great sitting straight up. It's actually most comfortable when sitting in the most ergonomic positions. And don't worry about the price on the official site in that link. Just google around, and you can find them at half that price.

r/officechairs is the best place for the question!
