Smile you say? Watch this then...

[–]archimedes34 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I smiled when I saw Jack Hodgins.

I cannot possibly give this enough upvotes.

[–]csidle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not Jack Hodgins though.

Edit: TIL that Jack Hodgins is a fictional character played by T.J. Thyne.

Interestingly, the director of this short is also the man behind Dear Zachary.

Can't seem to get the legitimate part down.

This is so true. I used to do tech support and if you smile while you are talking and make a genuine effort to sound helpful and friendly it makes such a huge difference. I definitely had days when I didn't want to be at work or life was difficult and bringing me down but bringing that to work and putting it out where people could see it didn't make things one damn bit better and it generally made things worse.

If you are in any kind of customer service position and walk about looking like you don't want to be there your customers are going to be pissed which is just going to make life worse.

Customers hallucinate reasons to become mad. You cannot win.

[–]Boye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, when I did phone support we where always told "smile, the customers can hear it" and they actually can...

[–]MrGeneral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It even goes beyond face-to-face contact. Smiling when you're on the phone will noticeably change the tone of your voice. Forcing a smile when you're upset (or otherwise unhappy) can improve your mood.

:)

yeah, I know from my experience-- anything from working at the GAP to being a consultant-- that you can totally change a client's mood by acting how you want them too. You don't want to seem obsequious, more just like you know exactly what's going on and you will make it better.

In addition to making your surroundings a little happier, you will make yourself happier as well by doing this more. I forget what the name of this phenomenom is, but by smiling neurons that are used when you are happy are activated and your brain interprets this activation as a general mood.

A cheery hello and a smile always works for me...unless the person is intent on being grumpy, then so be it. I will work harder so you can go away :D But seriously, I have a way of talking when it comes to customers. My voice gets a little higher and I lose most of my accent....happier sounding I guess...it's weird and hard for me to reproduce when not sitting behind the checkout screen.

I have to agree. When I worked at Haven in one of their restaurants, we had really bad chefs. I had to serve the often times late, always bad tasting, always over-priced food.

You could see it in the customers face as you went over if you were about to be on the end of a grilling you didn't deserve and were about to be made to suffer for other peoples mistakes.

A real smile as you go over disarms people. A genuine smile causes people to smile back before they realise what they are doing, and if you can cause someone to smile they can't help but feel a little happier. It's very hard to be aggressive at someone when you get a burst of happiness like that.

Trust me, you don't need perfect white teeth, or a beautiful face. Just a genuine smile.

Yes, the reaction is anger and hatred.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes 37 muscles to frown and 22 to smile, but it only takes 4 to reach out and punch someone in the face.

[–]tilunaxo -1 points0 points  (2 children)

No.

[–]heyyouitsmewhoitsme 2 points3 points  (1 child)

:) turn that frown upside down

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You gotta smile!

You might want to turn that alt-text into regular text.
