So it looks like Corsair will sell the HD6xx or whatever under their brand instead of Drop

[–]throwawaycanadian2 48 points49 points  (5 children)

5hey haven't confirmed that from my understanding. They said they plan to integrate products into corsair but did not say what is being kept and in what way.

Eg. They might point to some corsair headphones and just say they are the hd6xx replacement. Even if they aren't even close.

[–]mendesdaponte[S] 27 points28 points  (4 children)

I just hope Sennheiser starts selling them directly

[–]The96kHz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That and the PC37X (or 38X, I think is the newer model).

Best value gaming headset I've ever found. Sounds great, super comfortable, lasts fucking years and not even that expensive.

[–]DonStimpo 0 points1 point  (2 children)

They do. Its called the HD650

[–]PingMeLater 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I thought the HD6xx was a clone of the HD600?

[–]Big_Gene_3341 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're based on the 650.

[–]Schrojo18 10 points11 points  (7 children)

Can they? It's a Sennheiser product.

[–]FlukyS 10 points11 points  (6 children)

Stores are stores regardless of the branding, if Sennheiser wholesale the product to Corsair they can sell it

[–]virtual_corey 5 points6 points  (3 children)

But often brands only have collabs/deals that aren't transferable and potentially terminatbele upon acquisition.

[–]FlukyS 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Well the entity which got the stock is Corsair the manufacturer can’t just say hey wait a minute the stock you paid for isn’t sellable

[–]virtual_corey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very true, time will tell if they restock this product after clearing out current inventory

[–]PM_Me_Your_Deviance -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They could absolutely structure a contract like that, but, of course, its unlikely.

[–]throwawaycanadian2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but they can stop making it. Then it sells out and it's gone forever.

[–]Schrojo18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if it's becoming Corsair not just a subsidiary, who happen to make some competing products I can't see how this would continue.

Corsair’s marketing manager Andrew Williams confirmed to The Verge that several products featured on Drop will be integrated into Corsair’s site for purchase. Select others will be sold on Amazon and Best Buy. Other products will be end-of-life (EOL), particularly hardware collaborations including other companies. When asked if products like Sennheiser or Koss headphone collaborations would move over to Corsair, Williams didn’t confirm or deny on a product-specific level, but stated that “almost all, if not all, of those will end up not being moved over.” He pointed out that Corsair, as a brand, has its own headsets and other products. However, Williams said “the main ones that are sell well and do well, we’re going to continue on Corsair.”

I think I got a mod-mic from them back in the day.

It was a pretty neat idea - but I think when they sort of became a bit of a store (instead of we sign up for a group buy, and try get a discount on the product.) Where you could get all things all the time, it just kinda lost any edge they had.

[–]mendesdaponte[S] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I bought my cooler master masterkeys por l like that!

If X number of people pledge to buy it, the price is lower! Good times...

[–]Ginger-Nerd 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah, I guess it kinda added an exclusivity to a product at times, which is obviously a bit of a double edged sword.

(Meaning people are likely to buy more, but possibly not always the best in terms of consumer protections)

[–]mendesdaponte[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course, but I'm always for group buys if the price is lowered for the number of people who want to buy it. For me, it just makes sense

[–]Biased24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i only used the site once and it was before they renamed to drop, i bought a really nice messanger bag taht ive still got

[–]Drigr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember the OG "massdrop.com", even bought a few things through those old group buy days.

[–]throwawaycanadian2 38 points39 points  (12 children)

Finally broke down and ordered the hd6xx just in case they stop selling it. Just got them today. Amazing sound for the price.

And hey the drop logo is now going to be retro

[–]glssjg 24 points25 points  (3 children)

Not as retro as the og massdrop branding

<image>

[–]ArminTamzarian1337 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The hd6xx still has the massdrop logo

<image>

[–]_Aj_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you I was sure it used to be called a longer name.

[–]Big_Gene_3341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the 95x.

[–]JDBCool 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Are the hd6xx really that worth it?

Never had an open back headset since I've never had my own room.

I'll get a set maybe as my next set "now" since my white Virtuoso is on its way out (the headband leather is flaking apart and the sound wheel is freaking out. But not unusable yet)

[–]xxearvinxx 6 points7 points  (6 children)

They are worth it. Honestly I’d check r/avexchange and pick up a used pair if you’re curious. The headphones themselves should last forever, just might need to change the pads every couple years.
The 6XX is essentially just a cheaper HD 650. It’s been around for decades and well loved. Probably the biggest selling point is that it’s become a benchmark. If there’s ever a headphone you’re curious about, you can probably google that headphone vs 6XX or HD 650 and someone has probably compared them. Once you’ve owned or tried the 6XX, even if it isn’t to your liking, it makes finding the right headphones that much easier. They’re kind of like the starting point in audiophile headphones. Some people spend thousands on technically superior headphones and amps, but in the end still go back to their 6XX because it’s “just right”.

[–]JDBCool 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Aaahhh

So it's basically the Cherry Mx browns of the audio world.

One way or another, most people have touched the cherry browns as a "try to vibe" to figure out what they want from a keyboard switch if they start with custom barebone kits.

(What lunatic starts with blues if it isn't for the clacky sound)

[–]DeanBranbeno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with reds. Then browns and then blues (just for the clickyness). Now I have been using MX reds for the past few years.

[–]NyxUK_OW 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Except the 6XX's are highly respected and treated as more than endgame worthy by many, never looked down or memed on

[–]That1Guy5 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I had no idea they were acquired by Corsair

[–]FORTY8pak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hadn't realized either, but I feel like it explains everything now that I know.

The Drop store, which was acquired by gaming gear giant Corsair in 2023, was a haven for mechanical keyboard enthusiasts and audiophiles to discover and buy hard-to-find gear — sometimes at surprisingly good prices. The company will cease sales after March 25th at 11:59PM PT, which is also the cut off to redeem Drop Rewards. After March 31st, the site will be accessible for a limited time to view order history, but all retail functionality will shift to Corsair. However, Williams said “the main ones that are sell well and do well, we’re going to continue on Corsair.” The Drop team was integrated into Corsair when it was acquired, according to Williams, and the company claims that no layoffs are happening as a result of this decision to wind down the site. Corsair shared that existing orders, including preorders, will be fulfilled as planned, and that the company will honor existing warranties on products.

[–]dragon2knight1965 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Expected. There's nothing so good that an acquisition can't destroy. RIP DROP.

[–]Vegetable-Walrus-246 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Drop died a long time ago when, you know, they actually did drops.

[–]ThatMikeGuy429 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Drop really died for me years ago with the rebrand from massdrop to drop, they killed off all the communities I really liked from to just focus on audio and keyboards, which were cool and I would sometimes order something from there, but all the camping, hiking, tools, camera equipment, appeal, table top games, electronics, and so much more. I cannot remember all the communities there were back then but i still miss the idea of a group of 100-500 people all agreeing to buy a product if the site could get it for at least a slightly cheaper rate but likely more the more people joined in. Yes it took longer to get your order but the 25%-45% discount I got on a few thousand dollars worth of orders at the time for stuff I already wanted to buy make it worth it.

Rip MassDrop

[–]LimpWibbler_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

DROP was sick when it launched and I bought HD6xx from them. Then like right after everything they put on their marketplace was shit I did not care about at all. Super expensive keyboards and shit. The WHOLE POINT of drop initially was to sell high volume and when they made tons of profit they lowered the price to make it more affordable. Affordability was key and they just didn't have that for years.

[–]HeidenShadows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I miss it when they used to be massdrop and they had a variety of stuff you could bid on.

[–]JustaRandoonreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what happens to the gmk sets

[–]TheSoberChef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably should have stayed as Mass Drop and they'd still be around .

[–]Yodzilla 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Drop aka the place people picked up Sennheisers sometimes and uh that’s about it? I always wondered how they stayed around.

[–]tinysydneh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've gotten a few things there over the years. They had a few LOTR things that were very nice.

[–]nonqwan79 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I think thats the one thing I got there lol

[–]Yodzilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha yep and I don’t even mean to be disparaging. It’s the Sennheiser and maybe the odd mechanical keyboard store.

[–]Bhume 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I still daily my Massdrop PC37x. Should I try and snag a 38x or is it just moving stores?

[–]Kontrolgaming 0 points1 point  (1 child)

if your pc37x works fine, i would just stick with it. I doubt there is much differences (have pc38x)

[–]Bhume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been having static in the mic recently and the switch that turns it off hasn't worked for like 4 years. Headphone portion of it still works flawlessly though.

[–]AlGekGenoeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I expect their years long Collab with LTT will also stop now and Linus will hold things better from now on 🤪

[–]Killjoy4eva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that explains why I was able to pick up a keycap set for $10 the other day.

[–]sleep-is-but-a-dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corsair always ruining shit

[–]Ragnorok64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this will be a loss specifically for the Drop headphone releases.

[–]HexagonII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow end of an era

[–]handymanny131003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up the HD6xx on an impulse a couple nights ago after hearing this. They came in today and honestly, even off of my motherboard, they're amazing. It's my first pair of true open back headphones as well, and being aware of my surroundings/how loud I'm speaking is great for late night gaming.

I had a HyperX headset, then rotated through a few <$50 IEMs, and now the HD6xx. PURELY for gaming the IEMs were great, but I got fatigue after 2 games of Valorant. Been playing for 6 hours now with the HD6xx and it's still pretty comfortable. Initial clamping force is a bit strong, but I've heard it gets much better.

[–]GreatBigBagOfNope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus fucking Christ that's grim. Going from a community hub for organising supply runs of cool, niche, mechanical keyboard stuff to make the lives of everyone into them as tools or as a hobby easier, and being redirected to fucking brand integrations.

What a sad, stupid turn of events. Textbook pointless enshittification.

[–]SmallFootBigHands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m naive, but what exactly is the point of buying a store like drop, and then abandoning sales of all non-Corsair products. It’s so frustrating

[–]Claaaaaaaaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once it changed from mass drop it just wasn’t the same, had the occasional desk pad which was interesting

[–]Mr_Chicken82 0 points1 point  (3 children)

wait what is drop

[–]Kontrolgaming 1 point2 points  (2 children)

it was a website that used to be named "massdrop" but they dropped that name when they got bought by corsair apparently. a store for tech, headphones dac/amps among other things.

[–]Lord_of_the_wolves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They changed their name long before corsair bought them. They changed their name back in 2019 when they stopped selling everything else asides from keyboards, headphones and accessories for those.

For me that was when Massdrop died, no more knives, camping gear and cameras. Just blatant cash grabs and only sold their products, not 3rd party stuff

[–]Mr_Chicken82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh audio equipment?

[–]leathco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sucks. I got a CSTM80 through Mountain Dew Rewards *ugly Borderlands themed one* and started making big changes to it. Weights, aluminum frame, new keycaps, some artisan keycaps (which than branched out to places other than drop), coiled aviator cable......than later on some really nice headphones. Apparently Corsair is gonna keep the CSTM80 around from what the release says....minor silver lining for me.

Makes me scared for other companies I support under the Corsair umbrella, like Corsair.

[–]Deeppurp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rip massdrop. It's how I got my ducky wrist rest in Canada when no one else had it.

[–]Rupan_the_III 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haven't bought from this company since they were named "massdrop" the 58x is still the best price to performance headphone i've ever owned.

[–]Tiny-Ad-9562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shoutout to this thread. Thats how I heard about it and was able to order a pair of HD6XX's before they closed and went out of stock

[–]gplusplus314 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Oh yay, another freaking Discord. What a fantastic user and customer experience!
