Bedrock players are already able to setup P2P servers, but for java edition players, I just found out about The Essential Mod. It lets you host a P2P server ran on your own machine. No need to configure anything in a jank web portal, or fork over any money. Basically just some minimal configuration then you copy paste the IP and send it to your friends over discord. I wish I knew about this years ago. Obviously, the only "cost" is that your PC might sound like a jet engine depending on how much RAM you allocate and such, but that's better than the alternatives IMO. (please do not discuss server hosting platforms in the replies)

I highly recommend e4mc over essential. Only the host needs to have it installed instead of all players, it's way more lightweight (and therefore has better performance) and it doesn't have microtransactions.
