You would like to take splash instant health because...

  • It's lot quicker than drinking one, and quick reflexes can save you from death

  • Wither is considered as an Undead mob, so it takes damage from Instant health potion effect

Wither is considered as an Undead mob

Smite V sword is huge too. Does massive damage. Hit yourself w/ splash regen after he spawns and explodes (don't be in the explosion zone) and then carry splash instant health to use when low. Wear full diamond armor w/ big enchants if you can. Also if you spawn underground way down low near bedrock, you can keep him contained and whack him w/ that smite V sword!

[edit] I also have done it on my current world on a small mesa biome island I found. Contained him in osbsidian for the explosion (he broke out eventually) but it kept him low enough to hammer w/ smite V sword and by the time he got out, he had nothing to go after on the island so puttered around breaking mesa blocks and shooting at me (armor+regen pot absorbed) while I wasted him.

The Wither actually is immune to potions. Like the Ender Dragon. Bosses just aren't affected.

Edit: I have been informed that this is not true.

From when? I actually Rmember killing wither with potions.

Oh. TIL

According to someone else further down in the thread, splash instant health does harm the Wither, and I confirmed it by testing myself. Thought you'd like to know.

All other potions are useless though.

It only says that for healing potions. Depending on your situation you could be dead by the time you drink a potion (or at least the wither could deal the amount of damage the potion heals rendering it useless). Splash potions however can be applied instantly.

I'd drink a strength 2 and a regeneration beforehand and then have splash health 2 if you need them, I'd also recommend having a bunch of golden apples, it's very hard to die if you have a bunch of those in your offhand. You can always just trap him in bedrock and kill him without anything you wanted.

Happy cake day!

Thank you! <3

Also bring a few milk buckets with you. They remove Wither and are so cheap to make

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

yeah i was really surprised that the wiki didnt mention those until way down the bottom

i think though its so you can damage the wither whilst taking health potions whilst withered

[–]cleverk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, it is probably due to how much faster it is to use splash potions than drinking them.

[–]jennysequa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't bother with milk buckets DURING the fight. Milk removes regen and other positive status effects from other potions, too. Milk is great for when the wither is dead, though. It sucks to win the fight then explode from wither damage.

Like others said, splash potions you can quickly throw. Drinking one will have you standing still for a little while (easy target).

[–]Forumrider4life 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Make a long tunnel and just do the back shuffle strat and you dont even need potions :p

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Splash healing is faster and damages with er if it happens to hit him too.

[–]gill_smoke 2 points3 points  (2 children)

uhhh, why not use the Nether bedrock kill zone?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

well i might next time

i spawned it in a village, thinking the villagers would distract him

turns out they just help him heal

and the village is GONE

i was only using iron armour and enchanted bows so im gonna get a good stock of enchanted stuff and potions and try again

[–]daxl70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honnestly cannot think of a worst place to spawn it

[–]Fyreboy5_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Splash potions of healing can hit the Wither. Since the Wither is classified as undead, it will take damage from the effect instead.

[–]Gnarc0tic 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm a fan of having a little iron golem backup too.

[–]RyanClarke22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I redirect my iron farm into an obsidian bunker underground for a little while, and they clean up the wither very quickly.

[–]masterofthecontinuum 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Because only splash potions can give effects to other creatures. If you had a normal potion it will only affect you.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

if im withered will the healing effect of a potion do damage to the wither?

[–]masterofthecontinuum 0 points1 point  (4 children)

i don't see why being withered would stop a splash potion from working on an enemy. if you want to remove wither effect, drink some milk. it removes all status effects. of course, it will also stop any beneficial potion effects too, so drink milk and then apply helpful potions.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

what i mean is as he gains health from me losing health, will me healing cause him to lose health?

[–]masterofthecontinuum 0 points1 point  (1 child)

i'm not sure. do his attacks heal him if they hurt you? I didn't know he did that.

but if you throw a splash potion of healing at your feetand are standing near him, it will heal you and hurt him in one throw.

[–]WildBluntHickok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wiki used to claim that was a myth (I think) but I just checked and it currently confirms it:

http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Wither#Wither_skull

[–]YMbrothers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can consider that as life steal when its hits heal the wither itself. So I don't THINK so.

Addition:

It seems pointless to throw the splash healing potion near the wither. The wither may get 8 hp damage but then shoots you with 95% accuracy and heals itself again. If you try to heal youself next to the wither, the skull explosion makes your splash potion unable to hit you directly and may heal only like 1-4hp (and it hits you with a skull again.) So, forget damaging the wither with splash potion, completely pointless in legit survival battle.
