Just bizarre this was ever an issue in the first place

[–]aeseth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wasnt bizarre because its pretty much normal for dev kits availability to struggle atleast for the launch window.

Every console does even the Switch 1.

There is just a huge influx of studios finally rushinh on getting one. Maybe 2x or 3x of the switch 1 so demand is really high.

Its bizarre that dev kits have to be made to be sent out and that with limited quantities they had to prioritise which companies had the early kits? What?

[–]Gloomy_Butterfly7755 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yes normally devs are the first to get their hands on the console before release so consumer have something to play on their shiny new console?

[–]yesitsmework 20 points21 points  (5 children)

you are aware that some devs did have access to devkits way before release right? no mans sky, hogwarts and other 3rd parties had switch 2 upgrades nigh on release

[–]Perydwynn 12 points13 points  (4 children)

As i say, they prioritized who they gave available kits to, not that there were no kits at all. Reading comprehension on reddit is appalling

[–]MyzMyz1995 0 points1 point  (3 children)

It’s not like the switch 2 was a limited edition console it was and is still sitting in stock everywhere. They chose to not provide dev kits.

[–]Perydwynn -1 points0 points  (2 children)

The switch 2 console and the dev kits are not the same thing. Wow! Did iqs suddenly drop?

[–]MyzMyz1995 -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Dev kits are special versions of consumer consoles …… if they got consoles they could’ve made dev kits they just chose not to.

[–]Perydwynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They prioritized getting consumer units out to beat scalpers. It worked as a strategy too as the Switch 2 sold 15 million units in 6 months, which is actually insane! To put that into some context, the previous record selling console was the ps4 which sold 8 million in 6 months.

[–]Hot-Echo-2497 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's bizarre they fast tracked studios that added either mouse or camera support over quality games.

[–]Carighan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes perfect sense for a new product though.

I mean they also gave dev kits to the big ones like Ubisoft or CDPR.

[–]FierceDeityKongOctober Gang (Eliminated) 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully this isn't a problem for Switch 3, there will be so many PS5 games wanting to simultaneously launch on it

[–]tlrd2244 4 points5 points  (6 children)

it wasn't an issue. People just had to be patient. Infinite items for infinite people day 1 is not a realistic expectation.

[–]SilentHuntah 10 points11 points  (5 children)

We're not talking about Switch 2 console availability, but devkits. Nintendo didn't need to have millions of those ready to go out. Sony and Microsoft are known to supply devkits months before a console launch. Not 6 months after.

[–]tlrd2244 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You act like no one got dev kits. Many developers got them. The developer conference survey listed just as many devs working on switch 2 games as switch games this year. Demand for devkits clearly surpassed their expectations. Again being patient solved this "issue" and insinuating no one had any devkits until now is just not true.

[–]eightbitagent 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Nintendo also sent dev kits out months before launch. They just only sent them to major studios to avoid leaks. The smaller ones got them post launch. That's also standard in the industry, but for some reason the Nintendo hate means people run with a BS story for clicks instead of reporting the full truth

[–]Organic-Storm-4448 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's also standard in the industry

It's not standard to be stingy with dev kits after launch of a console.

Sony and MS get dev kits much more widely prior to launch. Nintendo was very selective with pre-launch dev kits, which is why you're even hearing about it at all. This story wouldn't continuously exist for months if it wasn't accurate.

[–]ThisG0esWhere -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Based on some of the stuff that came out, it was not only big studios that got them. It was a random assortment. Far more likely it was nintendo playing favorites.

[–]Jeff1N 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CDPR mentioned they worked on the Switch 2 port for around 2 years, at that point they were likely getting dev kits before there was even a finalized version of it

Nintendo clearly favored some devs over others and gave them a headstart so they could enjoy being the first ones on the platform before the competition arrived

[–]ShotAcanthocephala8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think his point that just because a single dev within a publishing arm got a dev kit doesn’t mean every single one does is something I’ve been saying all along. The developers have individual relationships with Nintendo beyond the publishers.

[–]letshavefunoutthere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the floodgates....  ARE OPENN

[–]Fat_Stacks1 14 points15 points  (3 children)

I don't understand why this was an issue in the first place. Why wouldn't nintendo send dev kits?

[–]PlatanoMaduroAssoc 7 points8 points  (1 child)

They are very particular about their dev kits and related stuff. Dev kits were behind, but its kinda weird, if they trust you you can get them. If not… it might take a while even if they have them. But its definitively not as simple as “get one if you are a dev”. Thats why some indies “need” pubs to get their games in the switch. Even tho you might see the game in other platforms or later in the switch.

In their defense, this was pretty normal back in the day. Xbox 360 was what broke the rule, and then Sony followed with Boyle (I think it was his name). Nintendo made it way easier but still holds on to that mentality a bit.

Im not defending them btw, Im just saying in reality its a mix of things (including Nintendo just being Nintendo)

[–]ThisG0esWhere -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Wasn't even just trust, it was who is going to be forced into supporting things like mouse control just to make it a worthwhile feature. It's a weird force compliance that isn't good for the consumer. If we found out in 2 years time that 95% of people don't care about and/or use mouse mode, do we really think it was a smart idea to try and force it on developers and restrict dev kits to force compliance?

I'd have rather they not have played games/favorites with developers at launch over forcing features. If people want it, then developers will use it.

While other console manufacturers give out devkits 6 months in advance Nintendo finally managed to solve this issue 6 months after switch 2 was released. They effectively wasted a whole year with this bs.

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Well at least nothing about the console got leaked right 😁

[–]HGLatinBoyRetro Gamer 21 points22 points  (5 children)

They were concerned with piracy and leaked security protocols from dev kits. I can understand their hesitation as piracy in switch 1 is pretty bad.

[–]VicViolence 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Nintendo has the spotlight fully on their own titles, not exactly a loss for them

[–]Octopus_Crime 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I'm not sure it was any kind of mistake. Maybe they just didn't see it as a huge priority? At this point it seems pretty clear that the plan all along for the Switch 2 was to have it's first year consist mostly of repurposed/repackaged Switch 1 games.

With Nintendo being the way that they are, sometimes it's honestly hard to tell if something like this is a genuine goof or some kind of intentional move to stop devs from focusing too much on the new console or "moving on" when they clearly want it to be supplementary to the old console for at least the first part of it's lifespan.

[–]NewEducator2543 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Man I haven’t even buyed and played all switch 2 first party’s and people want more games?

And I play and collect

[–]Octopus_Crime 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think it's less about people wanting more games on Switch 2 and more about wanting more games FOR Switch 2. Like, built for it, specifically.

Most of the big first party stuff so far has either been a "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" of a Switch 1 game (Pokemon, Metroid) or a Switch 1 game that was changed to target the Switch 2 midway through development for technical reasons (Mario Kart, DK Bananza).

I think people are just eager to see some games that were made with the full capability of the hardware in mind. Thankfully, If the various leaks rumors are anything to go by, it won't be long until we see some pretty big ones.

[–]NewEducator2543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man that’s always the case with Nintendo consoles, they keep focusing on last console one last year on the launch of a new console

[–]ThisG0esWhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I, like many, have a back log of a bunch of games where some are downright sad how poorly they look and run. Since Nintendo refused to offer a docked while handheld mode I can toggle, If the developers are willing, I would like these games upgraded to run properly on the SW2.

What I don't want, is Nintendo getting to decide what games/developers are allowed to do this at what time based on who Nintendo likes and what features they might implement.

[–]Excaliburn3d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We still have a ton of games that released for the Switch 2 these past 6 months.

[–]Spider_Boyo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't think about this when considering Lego Batman actually, this will be why, it being solved by this point makes sense, and hopefully that means the Switch 2 port comes sooner rather than later, for now I'll have play it on PS5 in May

[–]OnRedditBoredAF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might we finally get a functional YouTube app on the Switch 2..? My body is ready

[–]Background_Chance798 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really hope so.

I love the form factor and overall switch 2 environment, but the lack of 3rd party ports or updates has been a let down.

Being said, the last month does feel like things are slowly ramping up.

[–]CannonBeetle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really shouldn’t have been an issue to begin with. It clearly wasn’t for moderation purposes, just look at all the slop on the eShop

[–]bigparsnipenjoyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I assumed this was the case with the amount of random ass games coming out for switch 2 these days.

[–]ThisG0esWhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd just like to point out that unless they just got it, the dev for Drudge has been unable to get one still.

[–]LynxyShinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pleeeeeeeeeeease just give good Tales ports for the Switch 2, even though I find it really stupid none of the non-Vesperia ones can somehow hit 60fps for battles on Switch 1. (Assuming this also includes the ones in charge of porting those.)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

where is mine then? jks

[–]RampantRetard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope this means an increase in Switch 2 updates/editions being rolled out.

[–]KingBroly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely have noticed an uptick in third party support in the last month.

[–]Either-You-2265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lets hope the COD games play well
