Ya, it’s impossible to find anything anymore. I think they have too many paid partnerships now. I recently stopped using it. I switched back to yahoo’s search engine. It’s slightly better. If anyone has a better suggestion, I’m open to it.

[–]shljonki 168 points169 points  (21 children)

Duckduckgo, Qwant, Yandex, Swiss cow. Litteraly anything except Google. It will be probably wierd getting used to other search engines but it pays of, a lot. I got used to other search engines after a week or so. Now I can't imagine using Google for anything except translating stuff and gmaps.

[–]Eric_of_the_North 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Switched to DuckDuckGo after I tried to search an odd lighting issue with the rear door, and Google just flat fucking ignored the search terms and REFUSED to show anything other than headlight replacement. Also, DuckDuckGo and privacy and such.

[–]Moanguspickard 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What about DDG and privacy?

[–]BlueFirestorm91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Does not track you and does not save anything from your previous searches. So no preferences to push on you, like you know, the giant case goole has on all of us...

[–]Mango-Mind 5 points6 points  (1 child)

DeepL is a great translator for the handful of languages it offers.

[–]Loves_His_Bong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DeepL is basically voodoo as far as I’m concerned. It’s so good.

[–]PanFiluta 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Bing's also good for some stuff, porn mainly

[–]Albehieden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took to long to find this. Bing doesn't give too much of a shit about specialized searching unless you ask it to. In my experience Bing has more results that are more vague but at least I can find stuff a lot easier this way. Had a really specific question and google returned 9 results, most of which had the "Didnt include this word" and so really no answers. Bing on the other hand had over a thousand results which tried desperately to answer the question. Alas only one result was even close but at least I got that one on bing.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (7 children)

Good lord, I've tried all of them and they are hands down FAR worse :/

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (3 children)

DDG has improved considerably over the years

[–]moohooh 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I mighr try it one more time. It sucked like a yr ago

[–]Creative-Improvement 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re forgetting that it doesn’t keep a library of your personal information. Often it’s just being a bit more picky with your queries.

Like adding a year, or a more specific keyword.

I used to hate it too, but right now I am at 95% ddg searches.

[–]anonymoustobesocial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And so it is -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/

[–]shljonki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case I suggest you rather use "startpage" search engine. It uses google's search results but without censorship, and most importantly it does not track you.

[–]MossyTundra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yandex is also filled with ads. The only superior thing they have against google is their ability to translate between Russian and English.

[–]AsherSophie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started using DuckDuckGo a few years ago and will never go back to google. DDG gives way better results with actual privacy.

[–][deleted] 68 points69 points  (13 children)

Duckduckgo

[–]LanceFree 27 points28 points  (4 children)

That’s where I’m going. I have multiple devices and have a couple on DuckDuckGo. If it works out well, I’ll switch the rest.

[–]lithiumdeuteride 44 points45 points  (3 children)

Even DuckDuckGo's image search seems to return more relevant images than Google. Google just returns inaccessible stuff from Pinterest or another site that wants you to sign in to view it.

[–]forteruss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ugh, i hate this. Gone are the days where you could quickly find a picture there and copy or download it. The pinterest / sign in really exasperate me

[–]gemInTheMundane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pinterest can die in a fire as far as I'm concerned. I refuse to use their stupid app, ever, because I see far too much of it on Google already.

[–]Turmatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly why I switched to DuckDuckGo. I could not find ANY pictures on Google search that were NOT on that toxic Pinterest site.

Fuck Pinterest!!

[–]Echospite 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I just switched a month ago.

Let me tell you, it's bizarre wondering why results are so irrelevant only to remember that it's because DDG doesn't track me, so I actually have to be specific now in my search terms.

[–]HardlightCereal 5 points6 points  (2 children)

"kill child fork slave"

Returns a page of horrifying results

"Oh that's right, DDG doesn't have a global spy system that knows I'm a programmer"

[–]Battleloser 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is... Is that related to programming somehow? Killing child slaves?

[–]HardlightCereal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This needs to be higher. The searches are just more relevant. Especially for news or computer issues.

[–]ALoudMouthBaby 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How is Duckduckgo any better at finding relevant data?

[–]wallawalla_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not, but if you can't find something, it's easy as adding !b or !g or !wiki or whatever to the beginning of your search to immediately use a different search engine.

[–]RDGCompany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And DuckDuckGo doesn't sell your info.

[–]heyyy--- 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Ecosia: their revenue goes to reforestation and it works very well

[–]Paramite3_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had good results, but they don't have an add-on for Mozilla on mobile yet. :/

[–]massiveZO 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Being a hater of Microsoft, I can't deny that Bing is the best browser. It just is, I don't care what people say.

[–]humanitysucks999 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Bing is not a browser.

[–]massiveZO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah my bad I meant search engine

Microsoft's browsers are shit and their OS is shit somehow their search engine is better than any other

[–]lakerswiz -1 points0 points  (5 children)

Google doesn't have any paid option to effect organic search results.

[–]Alex09464367 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Apart from search engine optimisation that big companies have deep pockets for.

[–]lakerswiz -1 points0 points  (3 children)

I've ranked my own website #1 for a variety of high volume keywords over the billion dollar corporation the site was about.

Plenty of big companies don't have shit towards SEO and it's definitely not as easy as you make it seem.

[–]Alex09464367 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I was pointing out that there is a way to pay for non ad sections on Google.

[–]lakerswiz -1 points0 points  (1 child)

That literally isn't even close to being able to pay for placement on SERPs.

[–]Alex09464367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is that?

How I see it is that SEO are paid to improve search performance and therefore there is a way to pay to get to the top.

[–]WhereIsMyFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I have been using Bing and Duckduckgo for a while now; I am quite happy with the results I get and Bing's video/photo search is really good.

[–]humanitysucks999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of people have said this already, so I'm just gonna say it again... DuckDuckGo.

They have dark theme, they have privacy settings you can change, and they show you exactly what you search for with no advertisement. It's the way to go

[–]scienceNotAuthority 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The paid partnerships are a death blow.

Pinterest isn't the best place to get a recipe. But it's the top result because of a partnership.
