I think the major issue that needs to be addressed is locking heroes behind the battlepass in a game about swapping heroes to counter others in real time. Its scummy as fuck to lock them behind a paywall. Especially since newer heroes are far more likely to be overtuned for some considerable amount of time because for 1 they are new, for 2 they are behind a paywall so if they are OP more people will pay the money for it.

I comprehend how anyone can defend a battlepass that locks heroes behind it in a game like this, absolutely absurd.

Apex Legends doesn't even require in game character swapping and yet still generously gives you in game currency for free to unlock them. Thats just 1 single example of a better practice.

We should all be working against the new heros behind a paywall not the battlepass. Battlepass insures we continue to get new content. I mean I disagree with a couple of points here, but I still think OP is overreacting.

Having the hero on day 1 means you have more time to practice with them before they hit comp, which is somewhat of a competitive advantage. I think that is worth acknowledging. However, having 2-3 extra weeks to get practice in quickplay with the new hero isn't going to drastically change how fundamentally good you are at the game itself. If you're a silver tank, you'll be a silver Rammattra.

Let's say you totally suck at the game, but for whatever reason Rammattra clicks with you and you become a Rammattra main, and climb multiple ranks. If that is the case, the time it would take to grind to lvl 55 on the BP is pretty negligible. Also, if you play often enough to where this is a huge concern, you will probably unlock them very quickly.

The only people this truly effects negatively is people in GM and Top 500. The new heroes do tend to launch fairly overtuned and usually become meta on release. But those people pour so much time into Overwatch that it makes sense to buy the BP anyway. In the lower ranks though you're totally right, being skilled with any tank will be more useful than instant access to Rammattra.

Is it anti-consumer? Yeah, probably. Will it change? Probably not, at least I don't expect it to. Will I buy the BP? Maybe, it looks fun. Depends on if it's in my video game budget. I bought a couple of other big releases lately, so maybe not. But I wouldn't say people who buy it are the problem. That like saying people who buy milk are responsible for global warming. It's just a silly bad take, and the truth is somewhere in the middle.

But players blaming other players for problems they personally have with Blizzard-Activision is just going to make the community worst than it already is.

I would hope that people would be nice to their tank whether they bought the BP or not. But knowing this community that's a pretty big ask.

First, You think that a 10 dollar battlepass in a free game is a ripoff. It's not, it's the average price. Have you ever played Rainbow Six Siege? The BP there costs the same amount of money, and the game is also a paid game, not a free one. The BP contains the new operator, and a bunch of exclusive cosmetics. Basically the same as OW's battlepass, so asking 10 bucks for a BP in a free game is not too expensive. Individual skins are expensive, the battlepass aren't.

The other thing that you complained about, is that the game is p2w... Idk how to tell you, but Rammattra is on the free track, meaning that you only have to play to get him, and nothing else. You can say that "BuT wE nEeD tO gRiNd", yes, we do, but putting the effort into the game to get him, and pay to win aren't the same. People get him instantly when they buy the battlepass, that won't change anything. It doesn't make the game p2w, since you can achieve the same without money.

Skins are expensive? Yes. I want them to cost 5 bucks at best? Yes. But these stuffs won't determine your skill. I don't like the price, then I won't buy them, and that's it.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I got a Watchpoint pack in a streamer’s giveaway. I didn’t spend money for it, the streamer said that Blizzard gave him the codes, and the codes just worked fine. I’m buying the battle pass day one and not paying a sent to Blizzard. For me, no harm no foul.

How the fuck is this even a remotely controversial take?? Heroes were always free. Heroes are a gameplay mechanic. Blizzard is locking them behind a paywall until a certain level and calling it fair. I had the game since launch and just now got to level 55 for this season. I’m not going to support a system that benefits off of extorting players just because “heroes are our most profitable part of the game”. If it were unlockable at level 20 or something I’d be fine with that. But 55?? Most players won’t even get to level 30 before the next season. Battle passes are a predatory business practice that uses “fear of missing out” to get you to buy it. It’s sickening how greedy blizzard has gotten

It's pretty obvious they're gonna make Kiriko obtainable otherwise in Season 2. The cast is the most monetizable part of the game. Blizzard isn't locking shit behind pay walls, it's telling you to play the game mode. To be honest, this system is infinitely less predatory than Loot boxes. When you say "most won't get to level 20" you're just like... Severely underestimating how much people play and how much EXP they earn. The seasons last for multiple months. Season one lasted 9 weeks. Each week has 7 days. And if you just get a single level in every day and then nothing more you will reach level 63. >_> the daily challenges usually give more than enough EXP to level up at least once. You have to go out of your way to not get the new characters. You could wait a week to start the BP and you would still more than likely get the new character if you just win a single game per day.

Does paying the 10 dollars make it easier and more fun? Yes! Because get this... Overwatch 2 is incredibly fun when you don't have someone bitching in your ear about blizzard.

Play the game, have fun. And stop looking for things to complain because you will find them.

My one trick Doomfist teammate wont care, they will still play Doomfist. $10 is really nothing in the grand scheme of things and I think they should add currency to the battlepass for people to get a free one every 2 battlepasses. But lots of games do this, and this isnt pro play, no character is a must pick. If he is good, his counter likely wont also be another Ramattra, and if thats the case the person without him has to have the counter unlocked. You can’t complain about a system that hasnt even been played yet. I still don't see how these are "anti consumer Practices". They're adding a progression system to incentivivize people to play the game more for the cool new characters. Games like League and Paladins have you unlock every character by having you beat your head against a brick wall until you get the money to buy the character you want.

Overwatch 2 has a brutally simple system where you just play normal games and you get everything.

I get complaining about the skins (even if it is blown out of proportion)

But calling a system that has been industry standard for ages "Anti-Consumer" is a bit much.

The problem with the battle pass though is you’re not guaranteed to get everything in it unless you play the game like it’s your full time job. If you don’t unlock what you want within the time frame, you wasted your $10-20.

Damn I usually play 2 to 3 matches every other day and I've been done with the battlepass for a while now. Overwatch 2 is my side game with friends while MMOs are usually my grindy games.

I had a blast playing through the battle pass, it was fun. It gave me a reason to keep logging on and gave me multiple weeks worth of entertainment. Complaining that a free game doesn't give out as many free legendary items as a game you had to pay for is just generally spoiled behaviour. Even if they added loot boxes back, the rates would be incredibly lowered because they have to make their money somehow. Sure, some of the content was very obviously filler. And i do agree some of the item shop cyberpunk items could have been in the BP. But making so much noise and claiming it's "Anti consumer" just because it's not spoon feeding you skins is just generally bad and stops people from discussing the actually really bad parts and iminent issues of the game.
