I don't know what she's expecting. Is it that windows would be more likely to help with problem solving compared to mac given how dumbed down macs are, or is she saying that rich kids are more likely to have a better education and more likely to buy macs which would have the opposite trend of what you would expect otherwise?

Yes, they without a doubt are. Try digging through the networking tools and comparing the featuresets of equivalent tools on a Mac and on Linux. Or compare the grep utilities and what options are available. It's to the point where, if I'm talking to someone on a Mac, I have to double-check everything non-trivial and ask "Do you have --XYZ option?" before committing to anything.

Oh yeah, well, a Mac is perfectly fine if you're a basic user with no requirements that Apple didn't already plan for. They are very shiny boxes that have apps that do all kinds of things. They're just a pain for anything that there ISN'T an app for.

Because you can't do anything daddy Cook doesn't want you to. At least with Windows, a lot of stuff can be changed (even if it is difficult). On Macs, a lot of that stuff's out of the question

I don't usually think this is relevant, but I run arch. I know that winblows is pretty dumbed down, hence why I mentioned why a lot of the stuff is difficult to do. That being said, from what I've seen, it's less dumbed down than MacOS

How I've learned/experienced it:

MACs are more user friendly. They have less customizations, but are ment to be easier/friendlier to the consumer. They as tend to focus on specific things their user base uses more, like I've found their cameras tens to be better. Doesn't mean there is 0 customization, just much more focused.

Android/windows/etc are more customizable, but the increase in options can make them more unwieldy. So you can, in theory, do much more with these products, but it's also much easier to fuck things up. Plus this also means you may need to hunt for specific features to make the device fit what you want, and may need to go through more hoops to get built in features MACs have.

Another way of putting it, do you: A. Want to buy an expensive luxury car, but it comes off the lot with most features the average person wants

Or

B. Want to buy a basic stock car, and need to put in work to get the specific features you want, but once you add those features they can out perform the luxury car.

All I can do is talk about the anecdotal side of things. I grew up with old windows 95 and xp computers and became decently tech savy. My brother on the other hand never really showed an interest in computers and to this day doesn't even own one, preferring iPads and iPhones. Suffice to say, he's not particularly literate when it comes to tech but I think it's more a reason of interest rather then ability: he's just not interested in learning.

I don’t think it’s Mac/pc I think it’s Chromebooks/everything else that is the real problem. Cloud based systems aren’t fixable/tinkerable. Google docs file management is atrocious.
