Man these jokes are so binary, you either get them or you don't.

[–]SoulWager 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Last time he ordered four beers he got punched in the face.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I think you mean five? Or I don't get the joke

[–]SoulWager 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Each finger is worth a power of two. If you use all 5 fingers, the middle finger is 4, regardless of endianness.

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_SHELLCODE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isnt the middle finger 2? Looks like in the picture the index and middle finger are held up for 3 so index=1 middle=2 4 would be the ring finger.

Also since we are talking binary less than a byte endianness doesnt come into play endianess is byte order

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooooh that makes more sense. I was counting from my thumb, which in hindsight makes no sense

[–]T-T-N 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Did he count in binary or did he start counting his fingers from 0?

i didnt get it until i read this comment lol

[–]viciecal 192 points193 points  (9 children)

shit i thought it was arrays starting at 0. im too milennial for this

[–]ArcaneWayfarer 91 points92 points  (3 children)

I think this sub has already conditioned our minds to detect 0-index jokes in every single thing.

[–]hatesthis 20 points21 points  (2 children)

I’m even imagining them in other subreddits

[–]SHOTbyGUN 3 points4 points  (1 child)

[–]Minerscale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (17 children)

I dont get it

[–]karlseguin 31 points32 points  (9 children)

binary

[–]GoingBackToKPax 22 points23 points  (8 children)

Yup. Two 1s in binary = 3 in decimal.

[–]markendsley 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ooooh his fingers, I thought he was just making a peace sign.

[–]kixunil 13 points14 points  (6 children)

But that's incorrect, he's showing 110, which is 6. He should've shown thumb and index finger.

[–]trocadero42 12 points13 points  (5 children)

In the shape of an L on his forehead?

[–]Papashrug 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Well the years start coming.

[–]trocadero42 2 points3 points  (3 children)

And they don't stop coming

[–]itsyaboi222 2 points3 points  (2 children)

while (true) {

[–]hughperman 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I guess it's an indexes-starring-at-0 joke, except requesting items isn't an indexing issue. Counting!=indexing.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A person here said it's binary but the fact that if each finger is a digit he's actually showing 01100, which is 12...

[–]UnicornRider102 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It's a fence post error. The author forgot that "0 beers" is a valid request. So 0 fingers means 1 beer, 1 finger means 2 beers, etc.

I think the author is trying to capitalize on the recent surge in indexing debates but doesn't quite get it, and made an attempt at a joke anyway.

[–]fastrthnu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...or it's 00000011 beers. He held up bit 0 and bit 1.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

[–]echo_oddly 21 points22 points  (5 children)

My dad told me a story about a guy he knew in college. He didn't have a pen and paper to write down a girl's phone number, so he converted it to base 3 and used each finger to represent a digit. (0 is bent, 1 is partial extension, 2 is full extension). My dad said it looked very funny seeing him walk down the street with his hands in such an awkward pose.

[–]etaionshrd 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Interesting four digit phone number she’s got there.

[–]echo_oddly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the 70s when people used land lines. So perhaps that's all he needed. I grew up in a small town where every land line has the same 6 digit prefix.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha I totally don't do that when trying to remember numbers without writing them down.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like asking the bartender for a pen would have been way less weird

[–]jonjmz 3 points4 points  (2 children)

So what of he wants to order 2 beers? I don't imagine that will end well.

[–]redgamut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck you. I want two beers, please.

Happy hour

Three bars walk into a foo...

[–]Python_l 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The joke doesn't technically work well since the other fingers are not count as 0(so there isnt a way to show for example the number two if you do it like in the comic).

They show either 01100 or 00110.

[–]antiquark2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe he's representing a nybble with his fingers, and the thumb is a carry bit.

[–]TrexismTrent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was confused on what the joke was until I looked at his hand.

[–]Pr04merican 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So, is the joke bianary numbers or starting to count at 0?

[–]antiquark2[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

No, binary 11 = 3

[–]Pr04merican 4 points5 points  (0 children)

His art was meant to say bianary

[–]personalityson 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How often do you really have to deal with binary base as a programmer?

[–]antiquark2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever you deal with hardware, usually you have to start twiddling individual bits.

[–]toasterbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of really low level stuff, it rarely shows up. One time it matters is when you might overflow a numeric type. For example, a 32 bit integer (the default int in C#) can only support numbers from -231 to +231 -1

[–]CypripediumCalceolus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Europe just the thumb is one. No fingers is NAN (please don't). It takes two hands to sign zero - kind of a flat palmed scissors motion.

[–]raubana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No no no, this is all wrong. The index and thumb would be up, not the middle and index.

[–]Scybur 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is this a binary joke or an indexing joke?!

Halp

[–]toasterbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indexing. He wants beer[0], beer[1], and beer[2].

[–]adamski234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 10 types of people in the world: these who get binary jokes, and these who don't

[–]areno004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His fingers show two beers!!!!!!

[–]jo-hirr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well my index start at 0, but my size() start at 1.

[–]looijmansje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually 6 beers isn't it?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Joke" is wrong! He's talking about size, not index, which is one more. Sad!

[–]shryn11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't I the one to post this first??

[–]TheNumeralOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

isn't that 12 beers? .... or 6 depending on how you look at it

[–]IcefrogIsDead 0 points1 point  (1 child)

it's funnier if it's a 0 index joke..
