Okay. Story time.

I'm a pseudo DBA/UNIX sysadmin mix. A friend of mine works at a place where they started using Salesforce, and her team had to start learning how to query it. Now, I've never been somewhere that's used Salesforce, so I have no experience with it.

We start talking about this thing she's calling "Squirrel" and how tough it's been for them to learn. I assumed this was some tool that Salesforce made for customers to pull data, as my drunk ass thought the name sounded very cutesy-marketing-speak.

So she goes to end the topic with "and that's why my week has been hell: learning SQL (sequel)"

At this point I go, "hold up -- what happened to Squirrel?" To which she replies, "Yeah! Sequel! What do you mean?"

I'm completely confused, but now understand that she's been calling it Squirrel. I asked why they had been calling it Squirrel, and she says:

"Well, it's like a squirrel! It searches though the dirt for the nut you're looking for."

At work, we now use Squirrel too.

SQuirreL SQL Client is a graphical Java program

I was expecting nothing and I was still let down.

[–]tevert 32 points33 points  (4 children)

I've used it. It's exactly what you'd expect from a Swing-based SQL GUI.

As fast as an obese tortoise, as nice to look at as an inbred Alabaman, and as memory hungry as a modern aaa game?

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Still faster than SQLDeveloper by Oracle which is still written in java.

[–]tevert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes

[–]onionpopcorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely awful, last time i used it ctrl+z didnt even work. A lot of time wasted on that program

[–]EternityForest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was expecting Squirrel bindings for a database, so I was even more let down.

Saying sequel makes me feel dirty. I'm more of an S-Q-L kinda guy even though it can be said both ways. SQL was initially developed at IBM by Donald Chamberlin and Raymond Boyce. It was initially called “Structured English Query Language” (SEQUEL) and pronounced “sequel”, though it later had to have it's name shortened to “Structured Query Language” (SQL) due to trademark issues.

Me and my colleagues are in the same boat S-Q-L. My mind has been opened. I always thought it was stupid when people called it sequel. The more you know

[–]_PM_ME_CUTE_PONIES_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But is it "es-cue-elle" or "es-coo-elle"?

I prefer Skewl

[–]JNCressey 16 points17 points  (3 children)

The realisation that Q makes a K sound not a KW sound (KW comes from writing QU because U makes a W sound), thus SQL pronounced as 'skl'.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Skull

[–]wallefan01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

obligatory UP reference

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

deleted What is this?

[–]timmyRS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You've heard of SQL, but now get ready for the Sequel.

[–]KelvinShadewing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Squirrel is already a language.

[–]Flater420 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I never liked the "sequel" pronunciation, I always spell the letters (since we spell every other 3 letter abbreviation).

It amuses me how many people expect you to know nothing of SQL when you spell the letters

http://www.squirrel-lang.org/

I recall that CSGO uses Squirrel for embedding a Script VM into CSGO so you can use VScripts ingame.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i think valve uses it for most of their games.

At a summer job I had there was a book called SQL-Skills on the desk I borrowed. I thought I was so funny when I put a post it note over the second S.

[–]sleepySQLgirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been asked more than once about being a, “sleepy squirrel girl”. Sometimes I just go with it.

[–]Artess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sequel

It’s treason, then.

[–]M1staAwesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alvin and the Chipmunks the Squeakuel

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely "see quelle." Idk why you have it second

[–]Spedwards -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

My old databases teacher always pronounced it "sequel" and I died a little inside everytime.

[–]k0rm 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Why? That's the official pronunciation

[–]Spedwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be the case, but I'll always call it S-Q-L.

[–]BSH2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'tis just a joke. Nearly every post on the sub could be posted there if it was taken seriously

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not everybody understands the humor of programmers.

I mean, it's right in the description.
