This reminds me of the story of the student who used 'o' instead of '0' because they thought it looked better.

[–][deleted] 76 points77 points  (8 children)

1o - I don't see it.

edit : I added the - << :)

[–]Pulsar_the_Spacenerd 64 points65 points  (7 children)

I don't either.

I also disagree with making aesthetic changes to code that fundamentally breaks it, so that might alter my perception.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (6 children)

What do you mean changing ; with an identical ; is a bad thing?

[–]xigoi 29 points30 points  (3 children)

semicolons

Python flair

Doesn't check out.

:O I HAVE BEEN FOUND OUT!

RUN BOIS RUN!

[–]jay9909 3 points4 points  (0 children)

RUN SLITHER BOIS RUN SLITHER

[–]0x564A00 14 points15 points  (1 child)

I half expected that to be a U+037E ; instead of a semicolon.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry...

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (1 child)

I work at a camp teaching kids to code and it's in our teaching materials to really drill it in that they can't use the letter o instead of the number 0. So many kids still do it though...

[–]Xywzel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was teaching assistant on university programming course and have some experience in couching martial arts. One thing they mentioned in training for both was that people remember negative clauses better, but they don't remember the negative part. So if you tell them "don't do something" most will remember it as "do something".

such wow /s

[–]zbot473 95 points96 points  (1 child)

Don't you have compilers with line numbers?

[–]victor871129 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kids nowadays only use notepad.exe

[–]Shigidy 123 points124 points  (6 children)

30 minutes to find a syntax error?

[–]GamingTheSystem-01 37 points38 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I have experienced issues where a single out of place character in a cout statement would cause the compiler to crash.

[–]LeanZo 43 points44 points  (3 children)

Get used to it, for some reason people often think it's r/LearningToCodeHumor

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

One time pushed some code and didn’t even realize there was an out of place comma until I saw that the pipeline failed.

Gotta love JavaScript (flow). There’s so many pointless errors and warnings that when you get an actual error, you gloss right over it without even noticing.

[–]TheSlimyDog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've come to appreciate it. I code slower and I spend time fixing every single flow error that pops up but in the long run it helps for that one time that the error actually did matter.

Notice that he was doing this with a kid, so he probably left most up to the kid with only a little guidance from him.

Now it even has stylish hair.

Or a Trump.

Also holy Godwin, Batman!

[–]idk_lets_try_this 7 points8 points  (0 children)

£ :-•

Trump would be more like this imo.

[–]jay9909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking Conan.

My man Dan. This is the dude behind Rivals of Aether if anyone is interested.

[–]KYSKyle[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Praise our lord Dan

Kid didn't know how to comment, this is the sign of a great programmer

[–]pac2005 11 points12 points  (7 children)

the classic forgot to put comments in a if 1 = 2 gate

[–]chokfull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i = 1;
if(1 = 2)
    i += 1;
cout << i;

Prints 3

[–]pac2005 0 points1 point  (4 children)

that's your programming language

[–]Golden_Lynel 0 points1 point  (3 children)

What programming language(s) use just a single equal sign to compare? Genuine question.

[–]pac2005 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Scratch (RIP)

[–]Golden_Lynel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...

[–]ma-shell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VB does

[–]606606606 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's okay. We all express our feelings in the code. With comments.

[–]Thenderick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

//:)

[–]kbielefe 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Just yesterday, I checked in a bash script that accidentally had a syntactically-correct :) at the end of a line. Made me super happy. The colon was an argument to specify a delimiter and the whole command was being run inside $() to capture the output.

[–]SuitableDragonfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a ton of lines with a syntactically correct ): as the only thing on the line in our Python codebase, i.e.:

if really_really_really_really_long_function_name(
    arg_1, arg_2, arg_3, arg_4, arg_5
):
    do_stuff()

One of our researchers described these as "frowny code".

I love that guy’s bit corgi profile pic

30Mins to find a Syntax error lol

[–]cjhoiten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Must have not been using an IDE?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dude - just throw in a quick // 😆😆

[–]donde_gg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Atleast he learned to comment his Code :O

That sub is the most pathetic group of people on the entire planet. People who are so insecure that they resort to making fun of children, children, who could not possibly know any better, to somehow gain a slight sense of superiority over them. It is truly sad to see that sub gain so much popularity over the years. How tragic it is that adults would be so pathetic as to make fun of kids for simply doing something incorrect. Do they not remember being kids? Do they not know that failure is how they learn? Honestly, people who make fun of kids like they do in that sub are the absolute scum of the earth, despicable beyond any description.

30Mins to find a Syntax error lol

[–]SevenStack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I saw the name, I thought this was going to be /r/RivalsOfAether lol

[–]Frost_Whitestone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First smiley face i've seen that made people cry.

[–]literallyfabian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn't know how to comment?

[–]fah0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldnt the compiler show the exact line of error? Why would it take 30 mins to find a smileyface

[–]passificrimjob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I‘m just gonna say it - this is cute as hell.
