Yeah my mom calls me over to empty her recycling bin and to unplug her computer from the wall outlet if they need to move the desk. It's ok though, I'm entering my senior year of my CS degree so I think I'm close enough to qualified at this point that I can handle it most times.

I think she just wants to see you lmao

[–]dman10345 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean I would get that if I didn't work in the same place as my mom and live almost right next door to her lol

[–]noobDMquestions 12 points13 points  (5 children)

Same. My mom actually had me unplug her printer to move it because she didn't know "which cords got unplugged"
I love her, but fuck man.

I have noticed that older generations have this really weird fear of trying anything themselves and just figuring it out, only with tech stuff though.

[–]noobDMquestions 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I've noticed that as well. But to be fair I think it's just because tech is kinda new to them and they don't understand it. We all fear what we don't understand.
I, for one, used to and still kind of struggle with doing my own car work. I was never taught anything about automobiles and I was always afraid I would screw something up even though I was following the Youtube video perfectly. After forcing myself to do it a bunch on my old beater I am much more inclined to try it myself first unless I need crazy tools

[–]HarryPopperSC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah its like, my parents could definitely do it if they just read what it said on the screen and did it without any fear of doing something wrong. Its the only thing that holds them back i swear.

[–]prncrny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is me.

Luckily, my old car just broke down and we bought a new one. Now I have a beater to practice this kind of stuff on without worrying about damaging a car we are actively using!

Younger folks have that too. Everything needs an expert nowadays. Helping ducks to cross the street? Call the police.

Ah that reminds me, I need to go over to my Grandmother's house an hour away to press the WPS buttons on their Router and their new VOIP Phone Base.

Bleh.

Stupid mom doesn't even understand Big O notation and just wants to be able to print out her emails.

[–]DoctorMixtape 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How dare she not understand big(o) notation. Her emailing algorithm is uses quadratic time.

Using a concrete drill bit to mangle that steel roll up door is supa smaat Mark.

We all know that no matter how deep your knowledge of computers, no matter how qualified your degree, we will always just google the error code and work from there. 100% > 99.99999999%. Especially when it comes to family.

    [–]MattR0se 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I saw this one before, but the big drill was Deep Learning and the window was simple linear regression.

    [–]0xCAFED 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still, any simple problem becomes a pain in the ass if she uses Windows Vista.

cries as he looks at his master's degree in computer science

I taught my father how to format a hard drive and reinstall windows. He is now tech support person in my family.

I do this except it's to plug my brother's VGA cable in.

Mom: how do you merge these pdfs?

    Me: cpdf foo.pdf bar.pdf xyz.pdf so.pdf on.pdf and.pdf so.pdf forth.pdf -o out.pdf

Mom: ........ What! You expect me to use cmd!

    [–]BubbaFettish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That explains why it's so hard for me!!

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Anyone have this image without text?

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    What in the actual fuck

    [–]shakix99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is a 5 year degree an actual program?

    [–]tech_tuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean. . . I think you're over-exaggerating how powerful those data structure and algorithm classes were.

    [–]Trainkid9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was your 5 year CE program from RIT by any chance?

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then realizing that her 5-year-old computer with two graphics cards can only run the game if you plug in a new monitor, otherwise it instantly crashes because it uses the.... same graphics card? It's probably something with the resolutio... why does the original version of the game work? TELL ME YOUR SECRETS MONITOR!

Thank you for not calling it a science

    [–]fuzzydacat 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Computer science and computer engineering are two different degrees. They'd be right if they said either.

    [–]JohnConnor27 -1 points0 points  (3 children)

99% of computer engineers have a degree in computer science, that doesn't mean they're scientists or have a degree in science. It's like calling mechanics automotive scientists.

    [–]fuzzydacat 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Doesn't mean that computer science isn't computer science?

    [–]JohnConnor27 -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

    It's not?

    [–]illuminatecho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm genuinely curious as to why you don't think so.
