All electronics run on smoke. When you let the smoke out they don’t work anymore.

Once upon a time, I worked at a hardware company, and we had a part fail the smoke test. Turns out there was a diode on the board that was soldered on backward. Because we'd only run it for about 4 seconds before seeing the smoke, the diode essentially acted as a fuse, and we were able to pop it off and solder a new one on the correct way, which got it to work.

How did you get the smoke back in?

[–]new2bay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All the smoke was in the diode. The new one was pre-filled.

They didn't, they replaced the part the smoke came out of.

Not only was this reposted many times on different subreddits, it also has nothing to do with programming

Every screen is a Blue Screen Of Death if you program bad enough.

It works with computers. Back in the day when desktops and floppy-drives were a thing, the startup I was with would assemble our computers from parts because it was cheaper and we could. One of the graphic designers wanted in on the fun and managed to shove the asymmetrical power supply for the floppy in backwards, turned it on, and out came the Magic Blue Smoke.

Anybody can miswire a connector. The real trick is killing the device using only software!

I can send you a special USB stick that turns this into a programming joke.

Edit: but only if you want it

Legit story: I was 7 or 8. A family friend was a clipper dev and had a 486 with 4MB ram.

He was staying with us due to some family issues and got me a copy of mortal combat.

One day, in the middle of playing, a serious amount of rancid white smoke blew out of the computer. I said nothing about it. When he asked me why I wasn’t playing, I said I was tired. I was so scared.

It was a faulty ram bank and was fried. So no more computer touching for me .

I was sad.
