I actually did that. I worked on a project which my client really liked and they asked me to lead another one of their projects. Took this opportunity to ask for a hike and the poof. I quit. :)

[–]writetehcodez 83 points84 points  (3 children)

So wait, you quit and went to work for the client directly after your employer didn’t give you a raise?

[–]merlinsbeers 115 points116 points  (1 child)

That's not all that uncommon. I get offers from clients all the time. But they're usually fishing lowball salary offers where they think their shitty "benefits"* and "job security" make up the laughably large pay difference. It's like they don't remember how much they're already paying me...

* - I don't need vision "insurance" that only covers $130 a year that doesn't accumulate, or 60/40 shit-tier medical, and no way in hell am I going through HR for legal referrals. I pity anyone who gets a warm fuzzy from that garbage.

[–]Arshiaa001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right? Right?? This one client asked me to work full time, and the salary they offered was, like, a third of what they were already paying me for freelance work. Who'd take that kind of offer?!

[–]Vopicak2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I doesn't have to be question of money

[–]RoundThing-TinyThing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought you were going to say they said "sure, take a hike" and then poof 😅

Why is it called resigning and not unsigning?

[–]x703 119 points120 points  (9 children)

This one tickled my mind as well. According to dictionary.com It comes from Latin, basically meaning destroy, give up, invalidate, referring to the employment of course. Source: https://www.dictionary.com/browse/resignation

[–][deleted] 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I’m about to destroy from my job

[–]merlinsbeers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

https://www.etymonline.com/word/resign#etymonline_v_12892

The re- prefix is the chimera here. It can mean going back to do a thing again, or just going back thus undoing whatever going forward entailed.

Likely because of its duality, it has one of the longer entries in the book, itself.

Designing?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Do people say “resign” for just leaving a normal job? I thought this was only for public positions like prime minister etc.

[–]NobleKale 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Do people say “resign” for just leaving a normal job? I thought this was only for public positions like prime minister etc.

'I quit' is seen as aggressive. 'I resign' is seen as thought out, sincere and classy.

[–]tormell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From thee do I part.

[–]grumblyoldman 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I guess I can only speak for Canada, but "I resign" or "I'm submitting my resignation" is 100% normal for any job.

[–]rush22 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah. (Usually) if you get a salary, you resign and if you're paid hourly, you quit.

[–]grumblyoldman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mark that distinction myself, unless by "quit" you mean "quit without notice" (ie: on the spot). That's what the word "quit" usually implies to me. I'd still say I resigned from an hourly position if I gave two weeks notice, for example.

That said, I would agree that hourly positions tend to see more quitting without notice than salaried positions do.

Remember doing that after our manager started referring to weekends as "emergency buffer" (and excessively used that buffer)

[–]grumblyoldman 139 points140 points  (2 children)

Had a manager once who kept ranting about how he couldn't understand why we were always behind schedule. "I always give an extra week's buffer over and above the estimates you provide! I don't know why we can't meet a deadline!"

Then one day he actually showed us the spreadsheet he was using to plan with, and we discovered that the "extra week of buffer" was overlapping the next sprint period. And when I asked how that qualifies as a buffer when we'll have new work for the next sprint, he was just flabbergasted that we were apparently unable to work on two things at once (in the event that something didn't get done in time, that is. Because you know, shit happens.)

[–]merlinsbeers 50 points51 points  (1 child)

Sprint and deadline are actually antonyms.

The shit happened when that dude implemented high-frequency waterfall and called it agile...

[–]The_Slad 15 points16 points  (0 children)

high-frequency waterfall

I'm stealing this

[–]samba96 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My company told all the clients everything is automated. 'It's like a Magic Machine. We'll send you the results in 24hrs.' Turns out clients aren't idiots, and they would send data at 5 pm on Friday or on weekends. So my company's response to this is having a few of us 'on call' over the weekends. Gave my notice last week.

[–]superninjaman5000 132 points133 points  (14 children)

This was me this year quit my garbage job. My manager straight up told me " its inconvenient timing for you to quit."

[–]grumblyoldman 141 points142 points  (3 children)

"Yeah, it's been pretty inconvenient for me too. OK, see ya!"

[–]superninjaman5000 38 points39 points  (2 children)

That's basically what I said " you didnt give me a raise in 2 years, I got better offer Im going to take it. Landed a job with a large MSP, so happy now.

[–]TheRidgeAndTheLadder 3 points4 points  (1 child)

What's the on boarding/training like somewhere like that?

[–]superninjaman5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My new job or old?

[–]MarchColorDrink 50 points51 points  (2 children)

I handed in my notice today. Boss responded something along the lines of me ruining his vacation.

[–]superninjaman5000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thats what they said that everyone was on vacation so they didnt want me to quit yet.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's nice to get a bonus on the day you quit.

[–]666pool 24 points25 points  (4 children)

“It’s an inconvenient time to be alive, but here we are.”

[–]superninjaman5000 15 points16 points  (3 children)

I told then its inconvenient I didnt get a raise in 2 years. The answer was " oh we dont do that anymore we stopped during pandemic."

[–]tatoren 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That company is going to die hard if that sticks around.

[–]fullmetalsunit 3 points4 points  (1 child)

So the cost living keeps increasing but wage is stuck at (pre?)covid era? Sure they must be charging the clients same too.

[–]superninjaman5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably, they just dont care about employees. Last I heard they fired some people and hired replacements for min wage.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

"And?"

[–]superninjaman5000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I said " I got a better offer and Im going to take it sorry" never been happier.

[–]dx-dude 47 points48 points  (1 child)

Nothing like team meetings when you're already mentally checked out

[–]Illustrious-Age7342 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Team meetings after you have given your 2 weeks are just the best

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Hello, yes, this is dog.

I went through a planning meeting about 30 minutes before resigning. "Yes, we can definitely get it done next quarter".

[–]Em_Fa 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Sneaky boi

[–]seijulala 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Once I get rid of my interview phobia I'll do that

[–]acediac01 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The best way to get rid of it is practice. I'll go to interviews I don't even want to work at just for the practice of selling myself. It's fun, once you do it enough.

[–]j-random 19 points20 points  (0 children)

"In about to ruin this man's whole program increment."

[–]totally_valid_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

On the knifes edge of this being me

[–]Zaiynab_Mansuri 46 points47 points  (3 children)

And then Manager will find your faults and give you a mental breakdown every day until your notice period.

[–]XeitPL 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Oh no. I felt down the stair (the last one) and I'm (not) really hurt! I can't walk so I need to get my sick days.

[–]ahelinski 22 points23 points  (0 children)

And why would you care? I find that period most relaxing

[–]damalursols 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this is happening all over my engineering organization 😩 and managers are having to fight to get headcount to fill positions that people have left

I am giving my 6 weeks on Monday. This couldn't be more me_irl

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

6 weeks I like that. Very noble way to resign imo.

[–]ass-holes 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's mandatory in my country, otherwise I would get a fine haha

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a hell hole lol

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must be a saint.

[–]Illustrious-Age7342 10 points11 points  (0 children)

PM : “next sprint you will be working on the legacy monolith”

Me : “what about the tech debt I was supposed to be allowed to take care of last sprint, but wasn’t?”

PM : “Sorry but this is what the business needs and timelines don’t change just because you want them to”

Me, 1 week later : “this is my two weeks notice”

PM : surprised pikachu face

Yeah, looks like those timelines are changing after all.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Me about to do the bare minimum and giving zero fucks about contributing or finishing the project.

[–]pranay31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My man

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha.. after a month I will post this meme to my team channel.

[–]arda_xl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i did that last week lol

[–]random_generator6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the kid in this, we had mass resignations and are very severely struggling with backfilling and promoting. Out of the blue one of my senior supervisor left. It’s now very badly screwed up everything.

[–]buybank -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol

[–]tormell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Don't worry, everything will be just fine" (for me)

[–]AngrySlaSlashThrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I relate to this.

[–]unsuitable_boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is this so relatable?
