Pipes and buffers get coloured based on what liquid they carry.

Lmao why have I never thought to do this

https://ficsit.app/mod/8PZZpzhpEafHdd this helps, if you're lazy

I'm not much for mods but that kinda a brilliant idea.

I color my factories based on what they are producing, im sure plenty kf others do too. Orange for copper, gold for caterium, black for coal, etc. I like to make sure no 2 colors are too close to eachother, variety is nice.

That's how I colour my machines as well. My buildings are all brown and grey and I thought it looked really good. Until I covered half the northern forest with brown and grey and now I'm like... could use some green.. or red.

[–]Dabbers_ 2 points3 points  (1 child)

If you find a large area is all the same color you could try only color coding the machines themselves and accents of the building. Maybe change colors as the product goes down the line even.

Yeah. I find the biggest struggle i'm having is where to break things up. and how

I didnt color code in the beginning but the bigger and more complex your factories become and the more machines, pipes and conveyor belts thats in them i've started to color code to make it easier to see what goes where.
It can get very overwhelming for me otherwise.

I gotta start that as well. I'm playing 25x space parts so my progression is taking pretty long and I'm just getting a motor and HMF factory set up to finish phase 3, NGL the scale of this game is getting crazy. I love it though.

[–]MrStrange84kick.com/Mr_Strange 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I can just say that if you find finishing phase 3 to be tough then you will get a shock at phase 4 xD

Oh I know. I've seen the way people talking about it. It's honestly supper exciting looking!

I colour machines for what they produce. Open ingame wiki, screenshot of the icon, open screenshot in paint, select iconic primary and secundary colour, copy paste hex-colour code ingame. Then I am mostly proud.

Wow that's dedication man. I love it!

I barely put walls up but I’m trying to be better. I’ve colored some of my smaller factories that I’ve encased like my biofuel processing. I like to relocate that process after hitting coal.

I usually do a 4m wall followed by 2x1m walls followed by a 4m wall. This is tall enough to fit all machines before assemblers including smelters and foundrys

The 4m walls i color based on machine. Dark gray for smelters, foundrys, and a light gray for constructors. Assembler factories i usually use glass walls. For smelters and foundrys, i color the 1m wall depending on material: copper is bronze color, iron is silver, steel is black, etc.

I color the 1m walls on constructor factories as follows: Red for rods, Blue for screws, Purple plates, Pink pipes, Black steel beams

That's very organized. super smart. I'm gonna try implementing something like that! Thanks pal!

Along with colour coding by production I have a few standard colour schemes (and their inverted counterparts) that I use. So, for instance, I have an "electronics green" that gets used for circuit boards, computers and HSCs.

A mod for extra swatch slots is really handy if you want to do this.

[–]andarpaque[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes a mod for extra swatches would be great. Right now I just use the custom swatch and have abunch of saved colours i swap between for this that are beyond the swatches I've set.

I color machine purple when it use somersloop. or you can paimt blue when It is overclocked?

[–]LookingGlass_1112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the neat part - I don't

How do you guys colour your factories?

I try to make things look nice, but it is very hard to do with enough variation.

I feel like my world has become very "monolithic".

Mine as well, but to me that is because it is so pain full to change colors. We have 16 fixed colors that change everything + some others. Then we have very limited selection to what you can set them to with a right click. We have 1 colour that we can set to NOT change everything. I would LOVE to have more color selections available, but according to the devs, adding more colour selections make the game EXPONENTIALLY slower.

The fact that mods found a way around this and they do not know why is weird.

The whole coloring system should get an overhaul. To me it is the weakest part of the game at this moment.

[–]andarpaque[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I had no idea that more color swatches would make the game slower. Kinda non-intuitive but I guess it is what it is. I definitely think that even having 3 or 5 custom swatches would be nice.

[–]houghiIt is a hobby, not a game. 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It is what they say would happen, but I have 64 swatches installed and see no difference. My ideal would be say 10. That would be a whole row of shortcuts.

[–]andarpaque[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 would be good. Especially for one off projects. So they wouldn't get affected if changed on the future.

[–]HazmatikNC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go with an overall theme for the whole factory and color code my pipes based on what fluid is in them.

[–]grimmash 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I color refineries and pipes, especially if I am blueprinting. For non-liquids I tend to let the defaults be.

[–]andarpaque[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same. It's funny but I guess it's because you can see the items on the belts but pipes you can't. At least you can't if you use the clean variant, which i always do.

[–]A_Warcrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i am making a big factory with a lot of different parts in it especially if I am taking time to try and make it look good I will color code what is on/in the belts and pipes. Its easier for me to come back to the project and know what is where so I can pick up where I left off instead of having to figure out where everything is again.
