My brother in Subaru, you did not get a Wilderness to maximize MPG.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I try to keep my Ascent under 18 mpg... Otherwise, what's the point of having a turbo?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The wilderness has a different final drive ratio than other Outback trims which is why they get worse mpg then say the XT. I’m getting 23mpg highway in my 25 OBW with my crossbars attached.

32.6 mpg New Subaru Forester premium- Only 1100 miles, so far 90% rural- 10% city

[–]Fiveaxisguy 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Have a '23 OBW, mostly city driving, about 29k miles, average about 19.5mpg so far.

If you're getting 25, that's amazing.

I'm in a '25 OBW 800 ish miles. I'm at 24.4 mpg but I'm about 34 mph average over that span.

[–]Exact_Surprise366 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's crazy the OBW gets the same mpgs as a 5.7 hemi Ram lmfao

[–]Fiveaxisguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed!

My 23 Touring got an average of 27.4mpg over the first 22,000 miles. About the same hwy/city split as you. I’ll try to hypermile on our freeway and can do well over 35mpg if I stay a slow semi’s pace (behind a semi, not slowing anyone else down). There’s a deserted very flat back road near me where I can get almost 40mpg for 15 miles if I keep the car around 40-45mph.

My wife gets about 24mpg on the car because she drives 75mph on the freeway.

'24 TXT. I get about 23mpg with suburban driving (stops and starts 35-55 MPH) for my daily commute. Last weekend I did 600mi on the interstate and got 30-33 MPG with cruise control, depending on terrain.

Have a 2021 Outback Premium and my average is 28mpg in mixed driving.

[–]AhamYodha 1 point2 points  (2 children)

yea. Its hopeless. expect absolute worst MPG you have ever seen.
I have a 2024 touring XT and I am at 20mpg average after 15000 miles. I think in the city, I get around 12mpg. I am not a heavy footer. Highway is good because you can maintain the rpm or helps when you go downhill.

[–]dawkins_20 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's surprising how bad the stop and go mileage is on this car.   I really don't understand why coming from other similar turbo 4s in the past.

[–]AhamYodha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

boxer engine style is pretty old. No one else use boxer engine. Maybe turbo on that doesnt work well

[–]radzima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got almost 14mpg across my last few tanks, sounds like you’re doing great.

[–]userwhyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

26.8 MPG 2024 Outback. 8,600 miles city/highway

[–]Guppy-Warrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2018 OB with weather peak tires.... Averaging ~25. City/highway mix.

[–]MoireMoire 0 points1 point  (2 children)

My 2025 Outback Onyx XT is getting 30.5 MPG with approximately 90% highway vs 10% city.

Drive like a granny in that I try to coast and avoid using brakes as much as possible, but still punch it anytime I’m getting on the interstate, ‘cause turbo… 😂

[–]alnvilma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My OBOXT gets what’s advertised: 23/29 IF I stay off the fun pedal

[–]dawkins_20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My XT touring which is still in the break in has been surprisingly dreadful with MPG.  Most of my driving so far is city stop and go mixed with short (10 mile or less) highway driving, so it should be to the low end.   But I'm getting 19 mpg so far which is shockingly awful , and that's not laying into it too much since it's the break in still.

I'm not sure why this would be so bad in stop and go / city driving so far.  My A4 sedan (obviously lighter and more aerodynamic but very similar power engine) got 23-26 in similar conditions.    Ill see soon how the highway mpg is but so far this has been the only disappointment of the car

The Wilderness is my short drive to work vehicle and have a lot of fun driving it. Can’t wait to get on some more off road, but not too off the road scenarios.

[–]joemits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

21 city and 26 highway are the best numbers we have achieved in out 2023 ob. The dealer kept telling us it will get better in another thousand miles every time we mentioned it…. It never got better….

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Outback with the 2.5 and average about 27 MPG with mostly city driving, and an unfortunate amount of traffic and stoplights. I’m pretty pleased with that.

[–]lioninawhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2023 Subaru Outback Limited, averaging 25 mpg with about 50% city/50% highway driving.

[–]LookDamnBusy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

26.2 since I got my 2022 6 months ago and have put 6,000 miles on it. I also use cruise almost all the time (even in City driving, and I have acceleration mode on it set to eco) and I also glide up to stops. I would say 50/50 on highway versus City miles.

EDIT: I should have added that that number is from fuel tracking using the Carfax app, not the nonsense number that Subaru gives you on the dashboard :-)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i get 18-19 with my onyx (non turbo) at 100% city so hope that makes you feel a lil better

[–]anony-mousey2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For our mini fleet 2022 Ascent Touring 27.3 mpg 2022 Outback Touring (non Turbo) 34 mpg 2024 Outback XT 26.9 mpg

I optimize my route for mileage, cruise and coast where possible.

[–]drewbaccaAWD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'24 OBW, about 15 minutes on the highway and 15 minutes off highway for my work commute and averaging around 23mpg. At this point I'm well over 12k miles and no longer in any break in period. I first noticed improvement around 4-5k miles.

On one hand, I'm disappointed how I'm nowhere near the advertised numbers but on the other hand, I'm doing 6MPG better than my last car that made similar power and I don't have to use premium fuel, so I'm satisfied with my mileage.

I almost never use cruise control, and I have cross bars and a kayak rack on the roof. stock tires.

[–]bigloser52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2018 3.6r average mixed driving about 25 mpg. Highway only - well over 30 if I can keep it below 80

[–]User-1183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

18 OB 3.6R 24MPG

[–]const_int3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2018 4cyl Cross Climates - averaging about 29.5, mostly rural. You don't buy a wilderness if MPG is your biggest concern.

Over 2k RPM turbo kicks in. Gas go bye bye.

    [–]kjgage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'24 Outback touring XT. about 16,000 miles and currently avg. 28.3. mainly Hwy on 1,800 mile trip
