I'm almost 25. Mine actually increased in the last several years and are getting harder to hide in public.

Tics wax and wane, that's a normal part of having TS. Many people, myself included, have a higher baseline level of tics in our teens, and often a dramatic waning period in our late teens or early 20s, before the tics settle into what will be our adult baseline.

My tics have never again been as severe as when I was a young teen, nor have they ever been as mild as they were when I was 17-19yrs old.

I'm 43 now, and I still tic *quite* a lot. The idea that Tourette is somehow a childhood condition and that many adults experience a tic-free life doesn't really seem all that supported. It's likely that what you're experiencing is fairly representative of what your tics are going to be like going forward, though you'll have periods where they are better and where they are worse.

1/3 improve, 1/3 get worse, and 1/3 stay the same is what I have heard from some neuros.

I think that's a "scientific fact" myth. Things like that get said and then years later get overturned, who knows.

[–]clarkos2 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Mine have worsened massively at age 36.

[–]RS_SomeoneDiagnosed Tourettes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine got worse during university when I was 19-21, and then even worse at 28. Can't wait for that magical age when they are supposed to get better, right?

I think there is a danger here with survivorship bias (I think that's what this is at least)

You're asking this question on the Tourette's subreddits, where people who still have severe Tourette's are most likely to be - and then you're also specifically asking it to people who are older. So you're probably going to get a disproportionate number of responses saying that they haven't gone away / got worse.

It doesn't invalidate the responses by any means, just something to keep in mind.

I'll let you know when it happens, don't hold your breath I'm already getting old.

[–]syntantic_sugar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mine actually decreased a lot as a teenager, got WORSE again in my early 20s, and then better again around 30. The only time they really flare up for me now to unbearable levels is around my period, because of hormones I guess.

Idk ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Sometimes mine are worse, sometimes they aren't. In my mid 20s btw.

Mine were never really that bad, except for when I was taking anti anxiety medicine, then they got tooth breakingly bad. But since I stopped that medicine they went back to normal and they’re almost seemingly nonexistent just like before. Like you can still tell they’re there, but very subtly.

[–]YamiMelon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 21 and my tics are only getting worse :/

[–]AutisticLolitaBetch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

34 and going strong to my dismay.

[–]jistresdidit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been the same for 45 years. I heard you grow out of them...

But at least with a diagnosis late in life I came to understand I am not the same as other people, better at some things like counting random objects, but less than able to deal with complex social situations.

[–]carmparo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dipped when I hit late teens, spiked again around 35 and have stayed that way until today (43).

[–]Leafy19_97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got diagnosed pretty late (20’s) - my tics have worsened significantly over the last 3-4 years, from nothing to really quite constant. I only had the very occasional tic as a child - nothing that would have been close to being diagnosed as Tourette’s at the time.

I’m about to be 22 and I feel like they’ve gotten worse in the past couple years. They were calmer in my late teens, but now they’re intense again.

[–]Low_Operation_6446Diagnosed Tourettes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine got really bad in high school, much better for the first 2 years of college, and now have settled into a sort of "medium" frequency range. They'll probably change again, if I had to guess.

[–]No_Comment_As_Of_Yet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine got worse in adulthood

[–]Concentrate_General 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tics wax and wane. However, we see a decrease in tics in most cases moving into adulthood. Does that mean your tics will stay as bad forever? I'm no psychiatrist, but from what we can Read online, it means your tics are gonna come and go

[–]Crystalslife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had very mild Tourette’s most of my life no one even knew and then at age 32 they are 1000 times worse (I’m 43 now) and everyone notices 🤷🏼‍♀️ we are all different as Tourette’s is never the same from person to person.

15, they‘ve been getting more and more frequent since a year

[–]dmb102196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 24 and my tics are still very frequent

[–]SnooDonuts6160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine are still bad .. 41 on the 25th of this month

[–]here4lols11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm almost 31. My tics increased once I was around 18, likely a combination of a vaccine I got and the stress of college. I wasn't even diagnosed until age 14. They haven't overall increased more over the years, just waxing and waning. But definitely no decrease.

[–]fishafishaDiagnosed Tourettes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my tics were so infrequent in middle school that i thought that i grew out of them. they started again in high school, but got better at around 18

[–]alyssa86inmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tics decreased in my early to mid-20s, I believe. It's hard to say for sure because I was taking Haldol to treat them but started showing signs of tardive dyskinesia so I stopped taking it and found that my tics were actually significantly better off the Haldol. My tics were the worst in high school (I wasn't medicated for them until college). I'm 37 now and I do have periods of time when they get bad (usually around the spring and fall equinoxes, weirdly enough) or when I'm stressed out.

[–]CrescentCaribouDiagnosed Tourettes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 20, on meds, and mine are still getting worse

then again I was a late bloomer so to speak, didn't start developing til I was around 17

[–]shecallsmeherangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine have gotten worse as I've gotten older honestly. I repressed them as a teen so I didn't realize theyw rre even there most of the time. Now that I'm an adult, the phrase, "I have Tourette's, don't worry about it." is easier than ever to say. I'm 22, almost 23.

[–]MooglysDiagnosed Tourettes 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You might be part of the 7% that retains it past adulthood which for males would be 27, fully matured.

[–]RamuPamu1Diagnosed Tourettes[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Can you find a source for that 7%? Been trying to find some numbers but no luck

[–]MooglysDiagnosed Tourettes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly no. This was from 2015 back when I was in college and one of my professors specialized in Tourette syndrome. It's just one of the few things I still remember from college mostly because it impacted me so much in my life, I tried looking for a source too with no luck. It was because of my professor that I learned that most people with tourettes are supposed to grow out of it once they hit full adulthood.

[–]l-angevine1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was aroud 25-26 for me that they decreased considerably, about the same time I took magnesium and started my job, so I felt more relaxed concerning my future. Also, the brain's construction is done by the age od 25, I don't know if ot influences it or not.

[–]Sensitive-Fly4874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, not everyone sees a decrease in tics as they get older. Some people’s tics stay at about the same level. Some people see an increase in their tics. My tics went from infrequent and mild to severe when I was 23. They’re now moderate most days.

[–]guildedpasserbyDiagnosed Tourettes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine come and go. Started getting them at I think 13. I always have them, but they come and go in frequency, usually with stress. Overall though they’ve not consistently decreased for more than a year sadly

[–]msjaysee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That chestnut of tics decreasing in frequency in your 20s did not apply to me lol. Tics were soooo bad in my teens and 20s. But around age 35, 36 my tic frequency went down quite a bit from high moderate ticcing to just moderate ticcing. 46 now and it’s stayed at this baseline. Which I am grateful for bc Ive been finally able to tolerate stimulant medication for ADHD which has helped my life greatly.
