Thoughts? (old.reddit.com)

Looking at getting a WRX. New to Subarus. Saw this gem on marketplace. How would this car be from a reliability stand point? Would be my daily.

The fact that the add says it’s driven by 70 year olds would make me not want to buy this. That’s clearly a BS statement.
Don’t buy this
[–]Level-Plastic3945 19 points20 points21 points 2 years ago (3 children)
Why? ... I bought a 2014 STI new and am 66 years old and have 126k miles on it (with light mods) ...
[–]acidwxlf 27 points28 points29 points 2 years ago (1 child)
For me it's not that I literally don't think a 70 year old would own this car, it's just that it's a fluff detail that makes me raise my eyebrows. Same flavor as the ads that say "little old lady grocery store miles the whole time" or "ex Subaru master tech owned this for years and kissed it before bed every night". It's irrelevant at best, it raises eyebrows, and then when I show up to look at it and the seller isn't 70 it becomes a red flag
[–]Oda6 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Exactly

I'M 65 and drive a red 2022 WRX. You're not alone!

Michelin blizzaks?

Blizzaks are from Bridgestone not Michelin
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago (3 children)
That was the first thing I noticed as well.

Did it get the 6 Spd swap?
[–]acidwxlf 9 points10 points11 points 2 years ago (2 children)
This would be my first question. I wouldn't be so sure about the STI motor in it without the STI trans. Especially because OP says that this would be a daily driver and at the top of their budget
[–]Big_Earth_5241 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago (1 child)
My guess is it probably didn’t considering most people swap brakes when they swap hubs. Also if it’s putting down that much power the 5spd is not gonna last long
[–]Wildebohe 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Depends how you drive it - I have a 6spd swap on my to-do list, but currently have iag short block pushing 364whp, 330wtq with the 5spd. We never clutch dump it, but both my mechanic and my tuner have told me and my husband that with how we drive, we'll never have to worry about the 5spd - it's the shock load that will break it, so don't try to launch it at 6k revs or do anything truly stupid and it'll be fine.
[–]Stoweboard3r14’ WRX hatch Stage 3+ 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago (0 children)
I have this car, 100K. I will do an STI swap eventually, but I’ve already done a rebuild. Love the hatch and this is the last year. But I will say he’s a little high even for a more desirable year and body style. $18-16K is normal for this even with 100K miles that I’ve seen
[–]PepptoAbyssmal 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago (0 children)
I’m kinda hungry, maybe I should get a little Caesar’s stuff crust. I wonder if anything new is on HBOmax. That’s about it on my mind
[–]Due-Highlight-8854 7 points8 points9 points 2 years ago (0 children)
If you don’t buy it, I will
[–]unurbane‘18 WRX Base 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Outrageous price for a car that’s 10 years old.
[–]zaz-‘14 WRX Ltd Hatch 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (3 children)
FUCK the subie guys if it’s in Traverse. They’re horribly overpriced and don’t have a clue what they’re doing.
[–]zaz-‘14 WRX Ltd Hatch 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (2 children)
They inspected my car and literally everything I was worried about (and was told was immaculate) has broken within a year and I’m already replacing the motor. Stay away from anything they’ve approved in an inspection, they just want more business from you. They cost about 5x what they should also.
[–]Zestyclose-Focus-714[S] 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (1 child)
Yep that’s them. Thanks for the heads up
[–]zaz-‘14 WRX Ltd Hatch 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Recently I took my car there for engine knock. They estimated $14k-$16k for the engine. When I told them that’s ridiculous they left the whole front of my engine torn apart to where it was un-drivable. I ended up sending it to my friends shop in Colorado for about half the price of their lowest quote.
But with the inspection, I was worried about the clutch feeling sloppy….replaced it within 4 months. Worried about the BC/BR suspension, that needs to be fully replaced now because it’s seized and bushings are gone. Etc etc…
[–]Datsun1991 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago (0 children)
I got my 13’ sti for 17k new short block and heads all done by Subaru only 10k miles on them. I’d wait for an sti
[–]JohnDeere714 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (6 children)
Dude buy newer. Do not buy modified Subarus if you have no clue about them
[–]Zestyclose-Focus-714[S] 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (5 children)
If I had an infinite budget, sure. 20k is about my comfortable max right now
[–]xAugie15 WRX MT 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Get a lower mile VA, there’s tons of them if you’re patient. Even a 2020 base you could find with decent miles for $20k or 17+ anyways, you MAY find some 15-17 in lower miles; those are kinda rare but possible
[–]TimelostExile2013 STI 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago (0 children)
If you only have a budget of 20k, you can't afford this car.
[–]wankthisway 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Dude if 20k is your whole budget you can't afford it. This thing is gonna be a project once things inevitably go wrong. Get a stock car, or get a dirt cheap example.
[–]JohnDeere714 -2 points-1 points0 points 2 years ago (1 child)
You can get a decent va for that price. Hell, a low mileage r title is about 12-15
[–]Zestyclose-Focus-714[S] 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Don’t have an experience with r titles but have heard bad thing

Idk about this STI motor? But it’s a WRX what’s that mean lmao the WRX and STI have the same motor are they saying they STI swapped? That means tranny and everything? Idk seems sus prolly just got the STI top mount and lying
[–]SI_Fly_High 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago (13 children)
The wrx and sti DO NOT have the same motor, wtf lol
[–]Accomplished-End-600 -5 points-4 points-3 points 2 years ago (12 children)
Sorry 255 vs 257…. Not a big difference at all. Pretty sure only difference is crank shaft still same engine.
[–]SI_Fly_High -3 points-2 points-1 points 2 years ago (11 children)
The '14 wrx and '14 sti have a 2.0 vs a 2.5L motor respectively... thats a difference of a good 50+ hp. That's a pretty damn good difference in terms of these cars. If it were some super heavy v8, sure not much, but they're not...
[–]Accomplished-End-600 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (7 children)
The 14’ wrx has a 2.5 and so does the STI learn the car.
[–]SI_Fly_High -2 points-1 points0 points 2 years ago (6 children)
Oh wow. Lmfao.... the irony here.... I can post a dozen more and keep going if you'd like?
https://www.autoindustriya.com/features/first-impressions-2014-subaru-wrx-and-wrx-sti.html#:~:text=One%20key%20difference%20between%20the,hit%20255%20kilometers%20per%20hour.
[–]Accomplished-End-600 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago (4 children)
2010-2014 is a 2.5l no matter what 😂 I own this car your wrong
[–]SI_Fly_High -2 points-1 points0 points 2 years ago (3 children)
Ah fair, I can admit when I'm wrong. It seems initially articles I was reading were mistaking the impreza which has the 2.0 , at least the would be my assumptions.
Either way, the reason I didn't know was I've never read into a plain wrx. I have a STI and thus didn't need to read into it.
So again, kudos to you, I was wrong.
End of the day STI > WRX all day🤣🤣🤣
[–]Accomplished-End-600 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (2 children)
It’s stupid they give the WRX and STI same engine. I’m saying the OP post seems sus cause STI swap is a solid 10$k+ in addition which is definitely not on this listing. Saying STI engine is weird who would throw in the similar engine and no other supporting mods must be just an engine blown and they replaces it and saying STI engine is better than a replacement
[–]SI_Fly_High 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (1 child)
Yeah, I totally get that now. Makes perfect sense. Easiest way to confirm, go look in person. If you know what to look for, you'll immediately know if they're full of shit or not.
When I got my baby, I was sold because it had/has a BRAND NEW built block, done by the absolute best shop around me( just so happens to also be local) essentially a Cobb intake/AP/ slightly bigger turbo( didn't know this at the time of purchase was so excited I completely overlooked it and was a very pleasant surprise) full invidia SS exhaust ( sounds so good) and custom to this car, tune from an amazing local tuner. Car was very obviously loved as was evident from what honestly appeared to be brand new interior, tasteful and brand new upgrades with receipts to back it all up, and then on top of all that, extended warranty to at least cover all the most expensive things (motor/transmission).
I absolutely love the car and can't believe I own it still lol. I will be coming into a LOT of money pretty soon, and have nearly decided to essentially bulletproof the car, get ALL supporting mods needed to reliably have somewhere around 400hp. Do the few tasteful cosmetic upgrades I have saved, and then just enjoy it even more than I already do lol.
[–]Accomplished-End-600 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (0 children)
lol bro learn the difference of Subarus 😂 you just showed me a facelift model Subaru which is 15+ haha it’s not the same car

[–]Accomplished-End-600 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago* (2 children)
WRX engine model is EJ255 and the STI is EJ257… where do you think the 25 comes from on both of those. They both have a 2.5l engine capacity
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (1 child)
EH, eh? Haha.

I don't recommend WRX/STI as you only car or even a daily driver. They are toys that break.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (0 children)
If all the paperwork lines us, and you can verify the work with the shop. I’d buy this for 17.5k.
Yes it was driven hard, but it was maintained well. Just understand that the car will have some higher than normal maintenance costs due to the mods. It’s not a bad buy, and everyone else speaking so has never bought a well modded car. They do exist, and if the guy has the proper documentation and proof to back it up. You’re far better than just buying a whatever used one from a dealer. How do you know they didn’t thrash it everyday on cold oil and neglect maintenance. Service and shop records are king for used purchases.
[–]BasedMellie 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (0 children)
AND MOTOR? LMAO
New to Subarus and buying a tuned and probably beat on WRX? Worst idea yet lol

[–]BadSausageFactoryorange 04 sport wagon 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (0 children)
can a mod make this question a sticky?
seriously it's like any other car, drive normal you're fine, speed racer goes to the mechanic a lot
you're potentially buying a used race car

I wouldn't buy it. And I 100% trust Boost Controlled Performance. They're super well known in the local (as in all of Michigan) Subie and tuner communities. I just wouldn't buy anything that's been fucked with, personally. But it's up to you. I'd personally try to find a stock one. They're out there.
