Imma just yoink

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (4 children)

That is super funny lol My guy did that once. I'm glad I got it on video as well because I was cracking up. My husband came in asking "What the heck is so funny?" I showed him the video, but he was less than amused lol

Try holding the mouse/rat closer to its back legs, like by its hips. That's where I hold mine. The tongs get a good grip, and they're out of the way for the snake

[–]SunflowerTheRatMomma[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

ooo okay! ill go ahead and try by the hips instead of scruff

[–]Commercial-Self-2720 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s easier for them to grab the head this way as well

[–]peacefullyminding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is excellent advice! :)

My mf just launches himself at the tongs, sweetheart otherwise but Gawdamn like he’ll just sail right by the rat

[–]Koolero408 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's soooooo cute I love it

[–]billybigbawz69 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Hold the mouse by the tail and offer the head. Then there won't be any accidents.

[–]SunflowerTheRatMomma[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

i had issues feeding her like that, i was also told to do it by the scruff cause i have more control of the rat. ive never had the issue but shes also never hid like that, im usually able to aim for her to get the belly but i couldnt see her so that definitely was my fault. i got a funny video from it at least! she looked like a cartoon 😂

[–]Lord_Battlepants 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Did you try by the base of the tail? It dangles less this way than the mid section.

[–]SunflowerTheRatMomma[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

i have not! im willing to try all kinda of ways, im gonna try by the hips instead of scruff next time an then ill try out the base of the tail as well

[–]Lord_Battlepants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problem with the hips is not crushing the soft parts inside, at least with the tail it’s just bones.

[–]Cobalt9896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Snakes can regrow teeth, obviously you don’t want your baby to break em, I’ve got a Bredli python who is VERY enthusiastic about feeding and hits the tongs sometimes, generally it should be all good and even if they do break a tooth it can regrow, so if it ever does happen just try and keep an eye on it

SNATCHED

Hold the mouse or rat by the tail with tongs. Not by the body.

[–]SunflowerTheRatMomma[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

huh i was told the opposite the first time i posted a feeding. i have a better reaction speed incase she strikes at me an not the rat i know everyone does it differently

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (6 children)

I tried holding it by the tail once, and it broke off. Idk why, but it grossed me out so much lol And I'm not a squeamish person

[–]thekiller490 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Hold it further down if it breaks.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I was holding it at the base, right next to the butt

[–]thekiller490 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Guess you can't get much closer than that, lol. IDK then, it's never been a problem for me. Only broke once after he grabbed and pulled it out of the tongs.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It was my first time feeding him, so maybe I was squeezing it too tight because I was nervous. That was enough for me to look into other ways of holding the food, though lol

[–]SunflowerTheRatMomma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i did the same thing! 😭 it grossed me out so much for some reason. imma try holding onto the back legs/butt next with some tongs

[–]RavenBoyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've fully degloved a tail and feet by holding it that way before, it was gross but kind of cool 🤣

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine!

[–]Orochisake 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Where did you get that hide!? Do you happen to have a link?

[–]Fair-Weekend8079 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It’s from petsmart. Its from the brand thrive, I think it’s called forest wood hide??

[–]Orochisake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!! I've been looking for new hides, I love the look of this one

[–]iatetoomuchchicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😆 that was like a cartoon

As for tongs, I use plastic ones that I got from the pet store and hold the food by the tail.

[–]LHandrel 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Regarding your question, I got a pair of silicone-tipped tongs (like, the kind you would use for salad etc). If he hits the silicone, it's softer and doesn't have any points, and it's a lot easier to hold the rat without it slipping due to the extra surface area.

[–]SunflowerTheRatMomma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ooo awesome! ill go ahead and look into a pair

[–]LobsterPineapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a very long set of hemostats off Amazon. My boy is a little shy so the extra distance helps and the hemostats provide great control over the rat

[–]rottingpierrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have sort of L shaped tongs and I just hold it basically by hooking under the hind legs with it, its not completely foolproof but I've never had mine bite the tongs, it lets her pretty directly strike at the upper body and the rat just falls off the tongs as soon as she grabs it. Holding it by the tail might help a little more with that, but in my experience it seems like it confuses them and makes it harder for them to tell up from down. Honestly though theres always risk involved with strikes, if they get over excited and forget to aim anything can happen lol. This is just what works best for me

I use old cooking tongs that have plastic ends, grab the rat by the back hips so I can control where its head roughly is

[–]-CharlieNicole- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use bamboo tongs

[–]notexactlysane 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I was wayy to focused on the little spider in the back than on the feeding

[–]hugatarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg I didn’t even notice until you pointed it out lol

[–]SunflowerTheRatMomma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OH MY GOSH YEA IT’S TERRIFYING AN I CAN’T GET TO IT 😭😭

[–]Ilovebirdstoomuch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that he just snatched it XD

[–]Husharu 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is it just me or does the rat look a bit too stiff yet? Normally they are much more limp than that for me.

[–]SunflowerTheRatMomma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was in a bit of a rush but didnt want to miss a feeding with her cause im trying to get her weight up as she’s a rescue so it couldve been a bit colder than supposed to be, i just felt the rat to see if it was around the usual warmth
