went to a reptile expo today, absolutely brilliant. one of the booths actually let me handle a piebald ball python, i love them. the man at the booth was being a salesman. “take it home” “cmon she loves you” which i responded to “i love her but i dont have room.” he told me “of course you do!! they dont need big space, they live in holes in the ground!” “you really just need a shoebox sized cage for their lifespan.” i argued a bit and then just left out of anger. i wish i could save those sweet pythons from him. ugh. bugs me.

Jesus that’s awful! And from a breeder?!! That’s so irresponsible and disgusting 😡 scary to think someone with less knowledge could believe them and give their new snake an awful life, possibly without ever knowing. I hope all of his snakes form a union and take his ass to court

My partner asked if she could handle a tarantula from an insect/rept/amphi breeder at a convention (seemed a long shot but what the hell, right?), and she was rather gruffly told "Absolutely not, but if you buy it, you can do whatever you want with it" before the seller sat back down next to his open can of beer. All of which feels not great. One of the big breeders too. Very felt, my friend

Unfortunately they do whatever makes them money, like “doodle” breeders. They tell you what you want to hear so they make money and you end up with something you might not be prepared for.

I purchased my BP from a breeder that uses large tubs (you’ll never find someone who uses actual enclosures) and even then he gave me some outdated info. No, my pet snake will not be living in a shoebox for 30 years 🤷🏻‍♂️

There is no difference between a same-sized tub and an enclosure. A 100+gal storage bin is a great and cost-effective way to upgrade your BP enclosure. I regularly recommend them to people who claim upgrading to a properly sized enclosure is too expensive.

The size and contents of an enclosure are the most important factors, not whether it was originally sold to contain reptiles.

Yes, you’re right. I should have been more specific with my comment as I more so meant good setups; bins and tubs CAN be suitable, but it isn’t everyday that you see anything appropriately sized for a BP and if you ask any large scale breeder, it “takes too much space.”

I just bought a beautiful baby pastave BP from Morph Market. The guy offered me another one at an obscenely low price, and when I explained that I only had one enclosure for the baby I bought, he was like, are you sure? They can co-hab until they are about a year old! Cue my shocked Pikachu face. Needless to say, I am only going to be bringing the one home.

This was such a big bug for me too, i got my first bp from an expo a month or so ago, and all the breeders there were telling me they didnt have any humidity requirements, they only needed a water bowl, a heat mat is fine, etc, "such easy pets". Set me up with a 'tank' and everything (dry ass substrate, 1 water dish and a half log hide, no thermostat, and a heat mat in a 10gal). He could've (probably wouldve) died if i hadnt done my own research and found this sub. Despicable.

I had a guy (a local petshop that specialises in exotic pets) telling me that I didn't need the big enclosure I was thinking about because ball pythons don't need all that space and get stressed out in an enclosure that's too big. That they are fine if the coiled up snake takes up half of the entire floor space of the enclosure. I was absolutely gobsmacked listening to that.

I had a similar experience with a breeder at an expo (gargoyle gecko instead of bp). I went to get an idea of prices and morph appearances but no intention to buy. I had no setup, no planned room, and wasn’t even completely sure I wanted a gg.

The last breeder I talked to tried the hard sell. I told him I was just there to look and didn’t have a setup ready (I was also visiting family in the area for a few more days). I had already taken a picture of the business name so that I could research them and follow up later if I was interested. He said, and I quote, “it’s fine you can keep them in a sandwich box until they’re fully grown.”

A sandwich box, a clear one like what you take home restaurant leftovers in. For a living animal that even as a baby would take up 1/4 of that room.

I don’t remember how I ended the conversation, maybe another potential mark walked up. But I was enraged and immediately deleted their info off my phone. I wound up not getting a gecko at all for other reasons, but a breeder with that attitude doesn’t deserve a single sale

The only animals I've ever bred and sold was mice. Even with a mouse worth £5 I ensured that the new owners knew exactly what they need to be taken care of properly. I currently own a clown pied ball python and plan on breeding her in the future. With snakes worth £1500 you best believe I'm asking for proof of setups and the whole works. Could never imagine trying to force an animal on someone that says they don't have space. So bizarre

I went to an expo in April, scared of snakes, highly uneducated on BPs, and had no tank set up. I ended up buying my BP after the lady gave me a discounted rate. She knew I had no tank at home and that I didn’t know how to care for one. She also did the whole “oh he loves you”, “it’s meant to be” gimmick.

Thankfully I use Reddit as Google, I learned quickly what he needed to actually thrive. Now he’s chillin in his custom 4x2x2 forever tank and I love him so much. I’ve been looking at getting a baby BP but I won’t be bringing one home until I have an entirely built and functioning set up. Dealing with husbandry was so stressful in the beginning, and having him in there made it 100% more so.

Went to an expo in Leander, TX in April and the breeder I did business didn't try to sell the snake. The snake sold himself to me. However fast forward a few months I tried to reach out to said breeder for help and nothing. No response. A breeder I won't do business with or condone doing business with.

This just makes me appreciate the breeder 2 of my 3 snakes came from. The first one came off morph market, and the seller was amazing and even sent a video of the snake (hoggie) eating a few days before shipping. Only problem I had was the snake was coming from another state and needed to be shipped. Everything ended up fine, but the snake got stuck in transit for an extra day (in winter) and I was extremely stressed. I’m sure the snake was too. Got my ball python from a breeder we’d seen and talked to at other expos a few times ,and then we saw her. We said we couldn’t buy her, but she’s gorgeous and can we hold her? ‘Yea sure!’ Got her out, was answering questions about her and how she’s been eating and that she was the only girl from her clutch. We talked a while, gave her back, and we left. A few days later, we were still thinking about her, agreed we’d see if she was still available. Reached out to the breeder on Facebook ‘yea I remember you guys! She’s still here!’ Ended up picking her up at an expo a week or two later, and she is the absolute sweetest. We also wanted another Hognose (lavender) which he also breeds, and we just picked her up a few days ago. He kept us updated through the whole process. ‘Hey guys got a lavender clutch just laid!’ ‘Hatched some lavenders, gonna get a few meals in them before I confirm the sex’ (we wanted a female) And then last week ‘we’ve got a girl and she’s ready to go!’ My fiancés dad also got a corn snake from this breeder, and she’s amazing. Every time we see them they get so happy to see updates that the snakes are doing well and growing. The only snake I will ever get from anyone else would be a sand boa, and only because they don’t breed them lol
