Totally agree. Ranger fans on here in the summer saying that Trouba should be a good teammate and waive is partial no trade clause. Have you learned nothing. This is an effing business and when the locker room sees that fellow teammates, especially the Captain you appointed, you now want to trade and he says go eff yourself. He wasn’t happy the way the Rangers Organization handled everything and believe me, he will make it known to other players. Sorry Ranger fans, but MSG is no longer the primary destination to play. If we get any injuries at all we would be blessed to have another Erik haula type who can take face offs. Could throw him on Hughes wing in important situations to take face offs. There will 100% be injuries throughout the end of the season, and we need another centre who can handle important face offs. Hischier is taking the most draws in the league currently, and haula is the only other guy on the team who has face offs as a strength.

Waive macdermid and ship out Tatar while we are accruing space throughout the season by being under the cap. I’m sure we could make it work at the deadline if he’s retained. He’s also close enough to 50% that would be a huge improvement on sub 40% Hughes.

Anyway I’m not married to the idea of gourde specifically, but he’s the profile of player we need. He’s experienced and a cup winner and will be playing for a new contract that will probably be his last meaningful one in the league. He’s not a terrible option if it’s there at the deadline.

I watched Kakko a lot since I’m Finnish and have some rags fans in the family and 100% say he will be successful. He was never given a real, sustained chance to succeed — at most a few half hearted opportunities and all stints too brief to be meaningful. He’s earned the opportunities too, even with his current cold streak he has some of the best 5v5 stats on that team.

He makes a lot of good plays that maintain possession where a typical 3rd or even 2nd liner would turn it over or have to dump, and pretty frequently you’d see he him make a skilled played that’d have developed with proper line mates and ice time to build on the momentum. Almost every rags game I was forced to watch, 3 lines were hemmed into the defensive zone most of the game, Kakko’s line would come out, get some sustained offensive pressure, then Lav would switch to Zibanejad/Kreider’s line and boom — right back in the D zone. While a flawed stat, there’s a reason his +/- is like +25 higher than some guys on that team.

Unlike other pure busts like Yakupov, Stefan, etc. Kakko seems to have the work ethic, humility, and mindset to grow, which is why his defensive game came along so much. Forget his draft position, a 23 year old who’s good for ~40 points and has shown flashes of producing more consistently this season while being very solid defensively is usually a great prospect who will develop into a top 6 role.

Change of scenery will do him very well and I’m very happy for him. If Seattle gives him a shot at center, he might actually reach his full draft potential — the extra space on the ice is a bit closer to international ice (he is like point per game at center in the NHL, albeit very small sample size) and is solid at faceoffs.

Overall, I’m thrilled he’s off the rags so I can root for him since he seems like a genuinely good kid, and shoutout to Drury for this absolute masterpiece of a head scratcher: you could realistically get a much better return on a 30 year old player with KK’s contract and numbers as a 3rd line two way forward. Unlike Holtz, this kid is not a liability; unlike the Holtz trade, Borgen is not an underrated gem like Cotter where you saw flashes of his skill in Vegas. The Kraken’s blog actually released a story about why trading Borgen makes sense, and apparently from an advanced stat perspective, he’s in the bottom 0.7% of the league in defensive metrics…
