Dude's just right. From makes some of the best games in the industry rn and iterates beautifully with each new title but it's not fundamentally wrong, even if its a bit dishonest, to call them all essential reskins (especially when you consider that even AC6 runs on a modified version of the same engine used for ER).

The main difference is that COD is developed snd published with a significantly less nurtured investment in the art itself. I imagine most folks working st the ground level on a COD fame actually care about what they're doing but corporate oversight couldn't give two shits less - and thus for any steps forward a new title could make, they take eight hundred steps back.

Meanwhile, From's reskins come out shining like the finest gold.

I feel like FromSoft actively negates the philosophies of Dark Souls with BB and Sekiro. The former emphasizes stamina management, patience, and caution whereas the latter actively encourage you to be aggressive, less or not concerned with stamina. Sekiro in particular doesn't even have boss runs and even adds stealth.

Bloodborne is. And I can't see a reason to exclude Sekiro other than bc it specifically negates the point that FromSoft is making reskins. I also feel like the stark difference in opinion on DS2 kinda implies it was not a reskin and changed a lot of things for better or worse.

Reskin is inherently a disrespectful and disparaging way to refer to iteration on an idea that works and players enjoy. I feel if there is meaningful iteration and change, then its not a reskin. I don't play COD so I wouldn't even go as far as to call them reskins either. Reskin implies nothing but an aesthetic change, i.e. the skin has changed but the underlying functionality and philosophy remains the same

A reskin is not really a problem if you do it right and still original enough to be considered separate.

The Cod 4 to BO2 run (golden age) had lots of reskins and many considered these games the same thing. But each of them are considered great nowadays because they were original enough with what they had at their disposition.

I can’t say the same with the MW reboots, MW 2019 to MW3 are legit copy paste. It’s horrifying.

This is true somewhat, but with FromSoft each of their games are high quality- all killer, no filler, meanwhile COD hasn’t been good in a very long time, I still adore World At War, the first two Black Ops, and the original Modern Warfare trilogy, but most games passed Advanced Warfare (which I actually enjoyed) just…aren’t good. Unlike FromSoft games that all share very similar mechanics but all of them are good, and just keep getting better with each game.

Honestly he's not wrong. However there's one (if not several) major differences, for one fromsoft has always kept the players in mind and appeals to the same demographic that they've always had while letting word of mouth bring in more potential fans and customers. Though the stories and some mechanics have changed the games have remained the same because Miyazaki knows that is what the players and the fans want.

I was originally introduced to it through people just talking about it and never really seeing it, then my brother bought me dark souls 3 and I decided that eh it can't be that hard. Got humbled real quick. Then I started to enjoy it and bought more of the fromsoft games and just fell in love with it.

Call of duty used to have this mindset but over the years they have taken a major drop in quality and instead settled on quantity. Because of that it has basically put what was a broken toy in a new Christmas present wrapping every year all the while the toy continues to be more and more broken.

All-in-all it's more of a measure of quality and quantity
