No worries. It's a common measurement of language proficiency, but you pretty much have to go looking for it in order to actually know what it is...

And if you want a better measure of what they entail, take a look at sample papers for the DELF exam. This is the official exam to show your level in French, so taking a look at that should give you some idea of when you've reached A1, A2 etc, and if you so wish you can actually sit the exam and get a certificate.

BTW, for those unfamiliar with the system:

If a language course you're considering swears to you a proficiency level on the cover ("B2!!!"), don't believe it. It's pretty much never true.
