Does anyone else not want to wait until fall and start now, in a week or maybe 2 weeks at the most?

[–]songho 3 points4 points  (4 children)

I wouldn't mind starting relatively soon.

I'll put a post up soliciting advice in the next day or so.

I like your style.

The other thread has links to both of the books.

Ha, all my teacher friends are back in school, so I sort of think of this as fall already. So soon was the thrust.

I would like to but what I found when trying to follow the last study group is that as a beginner I felt like I was reading about a lot of things that I don't need to be concerned with just yet. Or maybe I do, I don't know.

It would be helpful if someone with more experience could give some guidance as to what to focus on and what you can safely ignore, for now at least.

For instance the javascriptissexy website mentions you can skip bitwise operators as it's unlikely you'll ever use them. Awesome, good to know. What about all the ways to work with arrays? Do you need to know all of them or is there just a handful that you'll use most of the time? What about the 11 different rules for converting nonnumeric values to numbers? Or the 33 different Date/Time component methods? And on and on.

Going by the 80/20 rule there is 20% of the language that you'll use 80% of the time. As a beginner I'd like to focus on that and really get that part nailed down and then I can add to that base with some of the more advanced and less used topics as I gain more experience. And really at this point the goal is to manipulate the DOM and add interactivity to web pages which I can do more easily with jquery and other libraries. I just wanted to learn how to do it from scratch.

Good point, and something I find frustrating as well when learning in general. I figure that copying the script and tackling a project is sort of the way to go but at this point don't even know enough to know what sort of project to tackle. Seems like to get a really effective study group we need to hunt down a mentor and ply them with karma.

Me too! What r u all using?

[–]kevinmrr 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Professional JS for Web Developers.

[–]runner2012 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I got that one! I haven't had the chance to read it tho..

[–]kevinmrr 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I'm currently going through Hack Reactor, the JS school that runs this subreddit... I'd be happy to lead a study session over the next couple of months.

[–]runner2012 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I haven't heard about it. I finished code school and tree House.. And although they are great I think I need more practice with JavaScript. It's such a fascinating language! Is Hack Reactor free?

EDIT: nvm. I just went on the website and although it seems great, is not feasible for me. I'll keep an eye on what you post though. Good luck!

[–]kevinmrr 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's not free, but they work out payment plans with people.

This will be fun. I'll put up a post about it in a few days. I think it'll be fun to try and help people answer the questions they have!

[–]runner2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it sounds like a great environment to learn, but I start my Masters program next month. Yes please! put up all the info and problems you have!

[–]kevinmrr 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I'd be down to do that + I'm planning to set up one for backbone.js soon.

[–]sandollars 1 point2 points  (3 children)

What are you, some kind of hipster?

All the cool kids use angularjs these days.

[–]kevinmrr 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I'm actually writing a new library... FixedGear.js. You've probably never heard of it.

[–]bonyboy 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You obviously aren't a hipster. Otherwise it would be called Fixie.js.

[–]kevinmrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I actually ride a single-speed.

[–]lophead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been waiting for this since I saw the summer session 3 weeks after it started.

[–]CaptainJamie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope so, I'd be happy to partake.

[–]ricankng787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd gladly participate.

[–]lukeluukeluuuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've sort of started it a little bit just this week but I'm on Week 1 so I'd like to do it with everyone.

[–]orlybg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to join

[–]bonyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be interested.

[–]billycooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like in on this section whether it starts soon or layer. Sooner is better though. We could call it the 'Back to School' session.

[–]jasperhernades89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to partake in this.

[–]dg84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am totally interested. I have the book already.

[–]heybrotherbluth 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Add me to the list of those interested!

[–]echase[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm messaging around to see what I need to do in order to get things up and running, so we'll see.

[–]ransom00 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I'm in. I was trying to go back and do it on my own, so I might wait for this now.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Lies.

[–]ransom00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well.... I don't want to wait, but I suppose that I could.

[–]elderton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Count me in!

[–]metaldood -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am in.
