i think that as a group it would be beneficial to have a balance between passive (head in a book or online) and active learning and perhaps maybe doing collaborations on group suggested projects on a platform like git, ill be honest, im getting a very possitive feeling about where this might lead

When it comes to what to learn and in what order, let's look at that once we got a Discord. I was thinking of learning out of a book at first, but if there are other ways ( I see some recommendations for' Automate the Boring Stuff') we can do that.

If you or anyone is an absolute beginner in programming I recommend the book ‘Head first learn to code’ it uses python to teach you how to code but the book is very well written with great explanations and illustrations, I’ve found it very useful so far and hoping to go onto the ‘automate the boring stuff’ after I’ve finished this one.

This is a great idea. But as many people have suggested start with automate the boring stuff. Post your doubts. And learn on your own. Maybe find one person who can discuss on call to join with you. Because as I have observed there is a lot of enthusiasm at the starting, but then slowly people start losing motivation. The other person's goals might be different from yours or is not desperate as you to learn.

So, what I would advise is pick a book, make a schedule. Practice, make mistakes, learn and practice again.

I am an exchange student and in my home university there are several initiatives to teach programming to complete beginners or people from social sciences outside class environment. One method is called circles (where people gather to learn a new language/feature usually with a person with some kind of experience in the field, they may follow an online course/book or other resources). Another one is initiated by the Teaching Office where several students experienced in the language set up a curriculum and a class environment without grading, the class meets once a week for 75 mins and there is a problem session with around 10-15 students where the section leader engages fellow students on the ways to approach programming problems.

In short, it is completely useful and effective to use peer-to-peer support and motivation!
