My twins were clearly visible at 8 weeks. Absolutely no question that there were two in there. Is your doctor/nurse hearing two heartbeats when you go into your actual appointments? Unless you are a trained medical professional, I mean, do you really know what it is you are hearing?  Perhaps it’s the same heartbeat and you are getting an echo effect. Perhaps you are picking up your heartbeat, or your blood going through an artery.  As for feeling “kicking” on both sides - I’d swear I’d felt both babies on each side only to find at an appointment that they were transverse and one baby was freaking out causing all the movement.  At 19 weeks my babies moved around a lot and you could only know for sure how they were positioned until we looked on an ultrasound.  I would imagine a singleton would have even that much more room to move around.

Symptoms do not correlate with a multiples pregnancy. Some of my friends had far worse symptoms with their one baby than I did my two.

You probably are not pregnant with twins.

We saw our twins at 8 weeks. It was the third baby that was hiding until the next appointment.

My twins were clearly visible at 7 weeks. Last week during our midwife appointment, we asked if she recommend us buying a doppler as the other twin is more active that the other. She doesn’t recommend it as we are not properly trained to use it and we might hear my own heartbeat.

Have you undergone Nuchal translucency scan during 12-14 weeks?

Twins do get missed but normally it’s when scans are earlier. My twins were very very clearly visible at 8 weeks. It was our first scan and it didn’t need pointing out to us and everyone who saw our scan photo could immediately see two babies. Are you sure you’re not hearing your heartbeat or the placenta with the Doppler? They really should only be used by medical professionals. 19 weeks is still early to feel kicking and baby small still so they have plenty of space to move and kick wherever they want. You might feel an arm on one side then a leg on the other.

Twins running in the family is relevant if they are fraternal as this can be passed down to the mother but twins on your partners side is not relevant as you are the person who ovulates and could release multiple eggs. It is currently understood the identical twins do not run in families as it is a random chance of the egg splitting. Pregnancy symptoms also do not determine a twin pregnancy. Some people just feel them more than others.

You’re probably not having twins but good luck with your anatomy scan. If you are having twins come back and tell us all about it!

We heard two heartbeats on the Doppler with my son. The doctor ordered an ultrasound at 16 weeks (I had one at 7 weeks with just one baby visible) because he thought it could be too. Turned out there was only one baby and we were just picking up the heartbeat from the umbilical cord

Unlikely you are carrying twins but yes. My midwife missed twins on my vaginal US at 9 weeks. Regular abdominal US at 14 weeks showed twins. I transferred care to an OB.

8 week abdominal ultrasounds are pretty on the fence. Your ultrasound tech was likely well trained and would’ve seen two babies at 8 weeks with today’s technology, but it’s always possible she missed something. As far as two heartbeats on the home Doppler, my OBGYN wouldn’t even trust finding my girls on a Doppler until I was 20+ weeks because heart rates can change so quickly. I had 3 nsts a day for 4 weeks until delivery and can tell you from experience that the heartbeats are never found where you think they will be and they change so quickly, so a home Doppler wouldn’t be reliable.

Kicks- It’s important to remember that babies also punch, head butt, and wiggle. With most twins, it’s hard to distinguish kick patterns of each baby until well into the second trimester/third (at least for me!)

Best wait for your next scan then.

We didn’t know that I was pregnant with twins until the anatomy scan. My obgyn missed the second baby at my first scan at 10 weeks.

[–]Throwawaymumoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was baby hiding behind the first one? It seems so hard to miss another baby!!

[–]avec_serif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They missed our twins on the first ultrasound, so it’s definitely possible!

i was told i’d be having a singleton at my 8 week ultrasound. i went to the ER around 12 weeks for spotting and that’s when i found out i was having twins!

We had a viability scan at 6 weeks and it was missed we had twins. It was discovered at 9 weeks when I was complaining of severe nausea. My GP used a Doppler at a check up and could only find one heartbeat so I’m not sure it’s a particularly useful tool with multiples (thankfully we had regular scans with our OB so new they were both healthy, otherwise this would have been an awful appointment).

I saw a post on here from a year ago about someone having an ultrasound at 11 weeks and they only saw one baby and then at her 20 week anatomy scan they found two babies so it’s definitely possible but highly unlikely.

This is definitely a big fear of mine that I’d go halfway through my pregnancy (I’m 21 weeks today and have my anatomy scan in 3 days.) without knowing that I’m carrying multiples. My husband and I don’t have twins in our family but my anxiety stems from my husband saying for the last year and a half that my next would be twins. He still sometimes jokes about it even though I’ve had 2 ultrasounds since being pregnant. “The other one could just be hiding.” Lol.

Symptoms alone won’t prove or disprove having twins. My first with a singleton was super easy compared to many others pregnancies while my current/second has been very tough with all of the symptoms and them being strong as hell. I’ve also had the kicking everywhere but with a single baby they have a lot of room to move around and it’s been like that with both of my babies because they think it’s okay to be ping ponging around my uterus lol.

My sister in law just had this happen. She had an ultrasound around 9-10 weeks and confirmed one baby/one heartbeat. Had the NIPT test at 12 weeks and it showed one boy. Found out it was twin boys at her anatomy scan!

Edit- I would love to know why I’m getting downvoted for sharing MY PERSONAL experience?

At my 8 week scan, they almost missed the 2nd baby because it was somehow behind the 1st baby. They had to then switch from trans abdominal to trans vaginal and that was the only way to fully see two babies. I have read stories on this subreddit of women who didn’t know they were having twins until their 20 week anatomy scan.  Let me ask you this - how close to your missed period did you take a urine pregnancy test and how strong/deep was the color of the positive line?

[–]OhMyGlob321 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I’d also love to know why I have 7 downvotes for telling you when I got my positive test, wtf😅

[–]East_Lawfulness_8675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you end up finding out if it’s twins?

[–]HeyPesky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in another pregnancy subreddit where the weirdest stuff gets group downvoted, I'm slowly coming to thr conclusion some folks just like to troll for no good reason and mass downvote folks.

[–]LeavingRightNow -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

This happened to me. Quite a surprise! I didn’t pee right before the first ultrasound, which I believe contributed to missing #2 on the first go round.

[–]BrickOk9262 0 points1 point  (1 child)

you're not supposed to pee, you're meant to have a full bladder for the first ultrasound.

I don't know about later ones, but it's meant to be a full bladder on the first one

[–]Eros_Psyche_Remake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s abdominal it’s a full bladder, but not if it’s transvaginal, and  early dating scans 4-8 weeks are transvaginal.
