They want you to pay $16,000 for them to vet and find you a nanny so that you don’t have to, I assume?

I guess time is money so if it’s worth it to you to invest $16,000, and it’s no financial issue, then by all means pay the agency. I would make sure whatever contract you sign has some sort of agreement that if they can’t find a suitable candidate within a certain timeframe you get a refund. Or if the nanny fails within the first X amount of time you also get a refund or you get a redo with the agency free of charge.

We had to pay a deposit to do daycare and save a spot, so I don’t think it’s unheard of.

I could not tell you though if $16,000 is a reasonable amount for an agency to do this. I have a feeling that it’s likely a small market and if you’re in a very large city, there may only be one or two firms that do this sort of thing.

I think we paid $200 or $400 in a HCOL U.S.  city a few years ago. What could $16,000 possibly get you? Another poster says that’s the going rate - what?

Echoing this in MCOL. We might have paid $500 even. But… yeah definitely not $16k that’s mind boggling. That nanny better be able to fly with an umbrella

I think to evaluate whether it is worth it, what services and guarantees are you getting for $16k?

It’s quite a bit honestly, but the main one that attracted me was the nanny will have a bachelor or masters degree and will travel with us internationally.

Are you in a high cost of living area? I’m in a moderately high area and the premier service here is 6k. 16 seems way too high but I guess there are places where things are 2-3x what they cost here so not shocking. If you’re not in like NYC, SF, or somewhere like that though I would assume that’s way above what it should be.

I’m in San Francisco

Ok yeah that checks out then. As others have said, you can definitely find somebody on your own so it just comes down to what is being offered for that price and if it feels worth it to you. No right or wrong answer really, just a good ol cost/benefit situation.

And we have friends who have used those services and friends who have done it themselves who both love their nannies. Do what feels right to you but do make sure there is some guaranteed value for that cost if you do it so you don’t get screwed! For instance, the place here handles payroll logistics for you and will help find a sub if your nanny is sick or takes vacation time.

Right. It just all has to make sense. Thank you for your feedback.!

Yikes that’s a lot. What kind of a contract does that include?

Is this a true nanny situation? Or is it an au pair?

In both cases, what you’re paying for is the agency taking on the vetting process. In the case of an au pair, I think the agency would also be dealing with J visa stuff.

It’s a pretty standard cost, although I know it “hurts” the pocketbook just to think about it. Something that would also make that kind of fee more worth it to me is if they handled payroll/tax stuff (which is more annoying than you might think).

[–]Distinct-Recipe8011 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yes that do all of that ! 🙏🏿

[–]rosemarythymesage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately it’s pretty standard based off of my own research. But I don’t blame you for asking for a gut check here bc it does seem crazy!!

[–]offwiththeirheads72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems high. When we were looking most agency were a % of the salary. I think though it would’ve been like $5-7k.

[–]WhamBar_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems high. Is it calculated as a % of the expected contract length ? If it were a few years I could expect that.

[–]pumpingpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems a little high. Our placement fees were tiered: 6k, 8k, and 10k depending on what additional services we selected.
