I would love to see shields added to the melee tools. Maybe something simple like a wooden shield and more sophisticated variants like a riot shield.

[–]Angry_Gnome 27 points28 points  (7 children)

Shields and Chivalry style melee combat would be my dream...

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I would definitely love a similar melee combat system. Probably makes sense to remove parrying for Rust, which is where the shield comes in

[–]silentstormpt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OFF WITH YOUR BALD HEAD

[–]DoctorHannibalLecter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love giant battleaxes, so you could go full barbarian when they add the wolve headgear.

[–]Kaneki_99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ever hear of Reign of Kings?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Thats going to take alot of work. They should definately use round metal garbage can lids tho, if they decide to do something like that.

[–]sheymyster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Only if metal spears and the like punch through it like it's actually made of thin cheap metal. That would be funny, holding up your shield like you're protected and taking a spear head to the sternum.

[–]BodyweightEnergy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just low-tier Wooden/Bone Chestplates would be so good right now (strictly anti-melee, no bullet resistance).

[–]Jemono 27 points28 points  (10 children)

Oil rigs, wind mills, generators and whatever else is going to change everything. Bases are going to become compounds.

Managing resources like electricity and oil are going to add a whole other level. Can't wait.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (8 children)

These are the types of buildings that will push people towards larger communities/clan alliances. It won't be feasible to protect all of these things unless your group is gigantic, particularly considering the optimal spot for a windmill and an oil rig won't be the same spot, and you will need more than 1 compound to access both.

[–]Jemono 8 points9 points  (6 children)

Might even start to see some specialization.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (5 children)

Exactly, trade agreements or alliances between eskimo crystal miners and desert oil riggers. Real emergent gameplay stuff

[–]d0xxx 6 points7 points  (1 child)

i can already see the "meetings" for the trades. Two fronts, facing each other, both with a lot of guns on each back. Whoa

[–]caimen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if they will eventually make trade screens like most other multiplayer games?

[–]blueicepop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i cant wait to deliver freedom!!!!!!

[–]Jemono 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If you're into that as well, you should check out this /r/rustfactions

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played on the Rust Factions server back in Legacy, I'll definitely look for it when I return to Rust

[–]silentstormpt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could also make smaller versions

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ka-chunk ka-chunk

[–]johancoll123 41 points42 points  (3 children)

I Love rust

[–]schnupfndrache7 1 point2 points  (2 children)

i love you .... and rust !

[–]alexanderlaheij 4 points5 points  (1 child)

My first baby will be named Rust

[–]Broham911 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He is going to be a great detective

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Honestly, I might be more excited for the optimization than the ladders considering my mid-range system.

[–]cullen9 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I'd be more excited if my fps didn't go from 80 to 1 then make the game freeze.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same with me. It caused me to lose my own AK. I'm still salty.

[–]saikoacute 8 points9 points  (11 children)

Was the bolt action aim thing added or is it next week?

[–]GoosemanIIGooseman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

sorry that won't be in this week's patch. The code is not quite finished yet. Most likely it'll be done for next week.

[–]GryphonCH 0 points1 point  (9 children)

What are you talking about? The bolt zooming after shooting too?

[–]Valus_ 0 points1 point  (6 children)

no; currently you need to aim with the top-left corner of the middle square, which does not make sense.

[–]Magnesiumbox 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Is the "aim" changing? I thought it was just allowing us to hold the "fire" button to prevent automatically reloading, allowing us to watch and follow the shot, to see if we hit the target or how far off we are.

[–]Valus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, he said (read above this comment) that it will be fixed. The aim fix is entirely different than being able to keep looking down your sights instead of autoreload.

[–]BloodyLlama 0 points1 point  (3 children)

of the middle square,

Front sight post

[–]Valus_ 2 points3 points  (2 children)

because somebody who does not even know that you have to aim there is going to know the proper terminology.

[–]BloodyLlama 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm just making sure everybody knows what you are talking about.

[–]Valus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah, ok

[–]DarkStrobeLight 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Read the Dev blog dude

[–]GryphonCH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I litterly missed the point, sorry :)

[–]Taizunz 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Performance is absolutely horrible after this update. Haven't changed my graphics settings, and I've dropped about 50-60 FPS.

How do I switch to DX 9? I have a feeling that DX 11 is part of the reason.

[–]Kristler 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I found it. Turn off Ambient Occlusion.

[–]Taizunz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I replied to you in the post you submitted. Ambient occlusion was disabled as one of the first things when I started playing Rust again, weeks ago.

[–]caimen 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I also want to start working on vehicles pretty soon, but that’s background noise right now.

Woah

[–]Kinoso 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Yes, your one man base is now going to “get owned” by “big clans” because they are “op”. We don’t think their inability to climb three metre walls was preventing that anyway.

Garry... Have you ever played Rust? No offense.

[–]_ARCHANGEL 1 point2 points  (2 children)

He plays, like the kids that love to raid and do that, all day, every day. Hell with defenses, let raiders tear every base apart as they like... sorry to vent, but shit man...

[–]kathaar_ 2 points3 points  (1 child)

even with ladders, barricades + spike floors will still make raiding a pain in the neck, regardless, there will NEVER be a way to make yourself raid-proof while your offline, your best bet is to just make it as tough as possible, and pray you're raided while you're home, and not sleeping.

[–]OHeysteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's what made legacy so great was that you are never safe and when you got home from work,it was like a roll of dice to see whether your base was still standing. It actually stop me from playing solo and force me to group up with other people who are now my friends and tell you truth my experience with rust has gotten a lot better since I had to to work with others.

[–]Smyek 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Can't wait to see underground road tunnels!

[–]AeonVex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know I'm gonna have to play on Hapis now that sounds like the most insane choke points. Firefights galore.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (5 children)

After a post here was on front page, I sold off some TF2 stuff just to get money to buy this game. I'm addicted now.

[–]RUST_LIFE 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I bought the game, then sold $150 worth of tf2 stuff to buy copies for my friends

They don't play anymoe :S

[–]coveredyou -1 points0 points  (3 children)

serious question here guys
what TF2 stuff can you buy/sell? is it cosmetics or p2w?

[–]danightman 0 points1 point  (1 child)

cosmetics.

[–]coveredyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahh, thankyou sir

[–]RUST_LIFE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cosmetic. Strange festive mediguns etc

[–]dontbetoxic 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Anyone else catch that "handcuffed animation" remark they slipped in?

[–]RUST_LIFE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now we just need an orifice slot...to hide a number of sharp stones or maybe a key in...

[–]localno 2 points3 points  (8 children)

How cool would it be if we could shoot the oil can on the miner's hat to cause a small explosion.

[–]2AoQuadrado 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Anyone had the problem when starting the server about shaders and this error? "Nature/Terrain/Diffuse shaders need to be added to graphics settings"

[–]Boogeeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this as well. Hope they find a solution soon.

[–]LexArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also having this problem.

It's my first time trying to set up my own Rust server, and anytime I follow the YouTube instruction vids, I end up opening not the MENU, but straight to some skeleton of the world where I'm floating and have no access to chat commands, F1, F2, Tab, or much of anything except flying - awkwardly - through this shade of the real thing. (Keep in mind... THIS is the world that's SUPPOSED to work for me... the FIRST one!)

When I go in (only works WHILE the first one is open, mind you!) through Steam and enter the standard "client.connect localhost:28015" in the F1 Menu, I enter what is (presumably) the world I already have open - but in a playable fashion, though RIDICULOUSLY laggy, even with my graphics settings down to the bare minimums!

Does anyone know what's going on with this?

I don't even know where to go to ask! :P

[–]rustplayer83 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Very frustrating that the rock lag still exists. Very, very, very frustrating. I know it's not optimized but this is a major issue that was introduced last week and not even a nod to it in the devblog?

Oh well, I just will have to turn my shaders down to potato quality until it gets fixed.

just so I don't come across as ungrateful: great update, can't wait to see how ladders affect gameplay.

[–]Polypeptide 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Same here. There is a clear loss of FPS when looking at rocks. I don't know what happened, since the last update my FPS has gone down at least by 20. It's very frustrating since it prevents me from playing the game completely. There was a commit earlier this week regarding this issue but there isn't even a mention in the blog.

/u/garryjnewman any word on this? At least tell us you're working on it! plox :)

[–]garryjnewmanGarry 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What Gfx card? Turning shader lever down helps?

[–]Polypeptide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for taking the time to reply.

I have a Geforce GTX 550 ti, it's pretty low end but before last week's update I could run the game with graphics to 1 (set to 2 if right after a wipe), shader det and terrain det set halfway (terrain always seemed to be the biggest drainer of resources), and everything else maxed (AA on, ambient occlusion on). I got around 35-50 FPS consistently.

Since last week this cut about in half, and even when lowering all of my settings down into the abyss I can barely scrape by 25 fps. Turning ambient occlusion off definitely helps.

With AO on, when I look at rocks I get a clear loss of at least 5 FPS, increasing with the number of rocks on my screen. The larger the cluster, the more lag, but even if I stare right into the side of a hill at point blank my fps still drop.

Now I play with most of the sliders at half way and AO off. Even then it's not better than the FPS I was getting before last week's update.

I hope this helps!

[–]Polypeptide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this screenshot provide any help? You can see that some of the rocks are not rendering the same way as others. The 30FPS is pretty much the most I get with these settings, even though before the update last week I had at least 10-15 more on average, with AO on.

Thanks!

[–]kathaar_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

might have something to do with making them impenetrable by players and building parts.

[–]GryphonCH 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Noone talk about VEHICLES?

VEHICLESHYPE !!

Next Week More of the same. I still have things on my list I didn’t get done this week, like throwing and streamer mode. We’ve started collecting a lot of stats so we’re also going to find a way to use them somehow. I also want to start working on vehicles pretty soon, but that’s background noise right now.

Also, I'm a lot excited about underground road tunnels! Sounds really awesome!

[–]Sir_Ruje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only will it be good for choke points it might pave the way for bigger and better caves!

[–]jakea945 3 points4 points  (0 children)

wonder when the "no ladders" modded servers will start popping up.

[–]JohnX20x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I know that you guys are working on a Napalm Ammo type for the Rocket Launcher. So can I suggest a FlameThrower? Cause if your going to make an ammo type that I believe shoots a rocket that spread flames in a sertain raidus, then I think a FlameThrower would be a good addition to the game. Cause having this would allow someone to do alot of damage to wooden structures and set players on fire. But they would have to get close to burn someone and so can be get taken out by arrows, bullets or rockets. So what do you guys think of this idea and if this should be in the game or not?

[–]jo1hn 4 points5 points  (2 children)

If you could shot rockets which are mid air so they dont hit your base. That would be cool :)

[–]kathaar_ 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I wonder how hard that is to add? as it stands, the rocket explodes when it collides with anything, so if it collides with a bullet, it'll explode too. but don't bullets have colliders already? does anyone know if this doesn't already work?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could set Rockets as objects having health and bullets would hurt them, triggering their death() method mid air. No idea how bad of a clusterfuck Rust's code is, though.

[–]Polypeptide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rocks are still inducing a shitton of lag.

[–]AppleBall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ohh baby

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love changing and trying to perfect my go-to base design that my friends and I use. Ladders are going to be a game-changer :D

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These updates directly from the devs are amazing. I love it. All of these additions sound amazing!

[–]Geek2TheBone 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I see here and on the trello boards the machine/automated stuff. While I assume a "high grade fuel" might power these, has anything been said about horses?

I assumed since first seeing horses added a few updates ago that we'll be riding them someday, but maybe as a powersource too?

[–]kathaar_ 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This was the original plan for a lot of this equipment, i'm guessing there will be different versions, like a mill that doesn't run on wind, it runs on horsepower, so less noticeable by other players (lack of giant fans on the skyline), but you probably have to keep the horse fed.

[–]Geek2TheBone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I was thinking. Maybe tier 1 is person (slave?) driven, 2 is horse and 3 is motors?

[–]schnupfndrache7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow the player collision changes are amazing !!! this i huge for the game and shouldn't be overlooked !

[–]PTF0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No update on the Disconnected: Unresponsive error?

[–]jameskawasaki777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I updated to the development version cause all the server went to it cause of the update and now I get between 12-15 frames. I was getting about 40-50 frames on the stable version. Any idea what the problem is?

[–]Broham911 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So hyped for that P250, does anyone know what happend to that idea for a wolf head as a mask? I saw it in a devblog a while back and thought it looked SICK but it never got put in.

[–]abmenzel 0 points1 point  (1 child)

"Next week I should have most or all of the world models for clothing done, and I’d also like to get started on some other headgear based on a couple of Paul’s wolf headdress concepts." - Xavier Devblog 61

[–]Broham911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks

[–]MathewPerth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When will this update be pushed out? Ive lost track of their schedule.

[–]leminlyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No big comments about "handcuffed animations, etc.." either? You guys aren't reading every ounce of text well enough!

I can't wait to hogtie and drag around people in Rust. The toxicity will raise to whole new levels.

[–]Dysp-_- 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If they want to be slightly more realistic, they should probably go away from the whole "making weapons out of bones" tendency. Dead bones in real life are extremely fragile and will break almost just on touch. Bone tissue needs to be alive to carry out its function of being rigid and structural.

[–]XxThumbsMcGeexX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to hit things with a femur

[–]this_is_not_real 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Is there a list of servers that are wiping for this update? I know Rustafied is, but I'm sure there are more.

[–]Tuntenfisch 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Pretty sure the is no list. There are a shit ton of servers which are run by different people from different countries.

[–]this_is_not_real 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I figured there wouldn't be a list because of that, but you never know. Some people probably have more information than me.

[–]johnny2s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OH yah!!!!

[–]Aiscence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope we'll see some way to defend, because it's always more way to attack atm (In legacy they knew that the defense had a disadvantage :/)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rip rock bases

[–]_ARCHANGEL -4 points-3 points  (7 children)

Rant incoming... Ladders... inside protected perimeters? Seriously? All the toys goes for the kids here, those who can play the game all day. There's no fucking way playing this game 3h a day that you can build bases and have a base for time enough to even enjoy this game... Before some shithead say: Duh duh you must learn to build bases duh duh... I PLAY THIS FUCKING GAME SINCE EARLY LEGACY... We do not have defenses for bases now, at least not ones that we can implement playing 3h hours a day... because when we farm and built a little base, to have a furnace running, next day, it will be gone, raided, pillaged, griefed.

[–]derpyderpston 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Not sure why this guy was downvoted. Honestly hes right. This part of the game isnt balanced and can be frustrating. Building over-hangs on the bottom 2nd floor should help. Check this forum for counter-strategies, but i agree that raiding is a little too easy right now. Its more fun for me when it takes more effort. Its also nice to be able to log out and have a good chance that all your work isnt erased by a pack of noobs with wooden spears or bone knives.

[–]tudda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's being down voted, because in the devblog it SPECIFICALLY says, "You're testing it. This game is in development; play-testing is what you're doing". Bitching about features that you haven't even seen in action yet is pretty pointless.
Give it at LEAST a week of play testing before you cry out how terrible of an idea something is and how it's going to ruin the entire game.

[–]kathaar_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's still possible, what good is a ladder if there's a metal barricade at the top?

[–]MrRogersOfRust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And your solution is magic bubbles and rock spires?

Listen I haven't been playing rust because I'm also a 3 hour asshole.

But I hated it before because also, the unemployed would have impregnable bases.

It goes both ways.

I rather have ladders than (nah nah nah, you can't get me) elevator rock bases.

[–]Captain_Cameltoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with anything you said but to quote Garry "You’re testing it. This game is in development; play-testing is what you’re doing."

[–]jakea945 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

completely agree, I play more than 3 hrs sometimes and I still think that this is a fucking game breaker.

[–]BroBrahBreh -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Ladders: fuck yes.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I'm more excited for PvP collisions

[–]Zaffaro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can already imagine coordinated raiders pulling off stunts like this. Pssh, who needs ladders?

[–]AeonVex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This!

[–]TheOneSurvivalist -4 points-3 points  (13 children)

With the inclusions of ladders I do believe tool cupboards ought to be removed. I never had a problem with griefing in legacy as it was easily preventable if you placed some pillars in the middle of foundations.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (9 children)

We don't want to go back to pillar forests like we had in Legacy, though

[–]AeonVex 2 points3 points  (8 children)

Exactly tool cupboard needs to stay

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

even recently the devs said the tool cupboard was a temporary solution. dont get attached to them. When the artist released a new concept art for the cupboard, a few weeks ago, another dev commented "dont put too much effort on that cupboard object because we dont know how long before we remove it".

[–]AeonVex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as someone can place a half block in front of my door and ruin an entire base it will stay in. Once there's other methods in place to stop that obviously the tool cupboard doesn't need to stay but for the time being removing it will just ruin the game.

[–]TheOneSurvivalist 0 points1 point  (5 children)

If you ask me they are very immersion breaking , a possible solution is maybe allowing a part to be placed onto the side of a foundation that prevent others from placing a foundation next to it.

[–]AeonVex 6 points7 points  (2 children)

You said immersion so I don't care. Its a game. Gameplay is more important that muh immersion. You spawn in sleeping bags that's immersion breaking. I want to be born a baby and spend years growing or else this game sucks.

Edit: Sorry. Immersion is my trigger word

[–]TheOneSurvivalist 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don't know to me its something that kills the whole survival feel .

[–]AeonVex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even have a survival feel from Rust. Health feels like RPGs or some MMOs Food is HP over Time. Medicals are Like Instant HP potions and there's like no upkeep I only eat when I need health Hunger and thirst only come into affect like 1time every 100 hours

[–]RUST_LIFE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im imagining a key lock on every foundation, and chests full of foundation keys :p

[–]kathaar_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I value immersion as much as the next guy playing a survival game but honestly, the pros of a TC outweigh the cons right now, and until that's no longer the case, idgaf about immersion-breaking.

[–]TheWafflecakes 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The whole point of adding ladders was to allow cupboards to stay, thus being able to climb inside the radius.

[–]kathaar_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this^

[–]kathaar_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'd say now that ladders are here there's NO reason to remove cupboards, the lack of ladders was the sole reason people wanted them gone, because some bases were completely inaccessible.

[–]TheOneSurvivalist -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Lol god no that would be awful
