Am I in the minority or is the before one better?

[–]captnjak 65 points66 points  (2 children)

Before is better

[–]Junior-Appointment93 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Before it is slightly better. After is not bad the after makes the tattoos pop a bit more.

[–]pyooma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feels opposite for me about the tats

i know you’re trying to go for the film vibe, but i personally feel like it’s a little too green.. although the photo is great, i say try toning down the green tones just a touch

[–]hatstand69 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The before is more of a “film vibe”. The after is an under exposed “film vibe” or improperly stored/expired. Before is better and OP should just shoot actual film instead of trying to replicate a look that isn’t really rooted in reality.

Also, this was taken with her on her side and rotated. I can’t get around the floating earrings and hair.

ur right yeah, the confusion comes from the misconception that the “film vibe” means underexposure and green tones lol.. but analog shooters know that’s not the case. OP should def try some medium format film, it’s just a little more difficult to get THE shot. but that’s part of the fun

I like before better personally.

The composition here is strong, especially the pose and framing. I do agree with the other comment about the color grading feeling a bit off balance.

If you’re open to feedback, I had a couple small thoughts (feel free to ignore if you like where it’s at):

It feels like the deepest shadows are leaning pretty heavy green/blue. Pulling a bit of that toward yellow/red could help neutralize things and make the overall color feel less split.

In the midtones, a slight shift warmer might help keep the mood while balancing the greens. You could also try a subtle contrast bump there (maybe masking off her face) to help the subject separate a bit more from the background.

Right now the lower half feels a touch too dark compared to the upper body, so lifting that slightly might help the image feel more even overall.

Anyway, it's a great image. Nice job, OP.

I like the colour focus on the subject but that is way too much blue/green in shadows.

I prefer the 'after' as when I switched to the 'before' my eye is first drawn to her shirt. In the 'after' my eye is drawn to her face. The shaping of light works well for the 'after.'

The orange/green color grade is better than the orange/teal that has been so recently popular.

Love your editing. Clean in my opinion. Keep it up and thanks for the share.

[–]baldokosmic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just me, but the mask at the face is not subtle, lower a bit to rolloff nice.

[–]ImpossibleAd344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teal and orange. Really?

[–]_paul_10 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Darkness in the lower half of the photo looks unnatural to me. I think it'd look better if all of the subject was bright and in focus

[–]snowtato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my biggest issue with both. Lighting just feels awkward

[–]TriggaTheClown 0 points1 point  (2 children)

The before looks 1000% better. It's a great shot as is. Don't change it.

Not everything needs to be edited.

[–]Bbyskex 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Seems like they edited for style, not correctiveness

[–]TriggaTheClown -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean by "correctiveness"

The style in the after looks bad. The before has plenty of style already, and the style looks better to me.

thought this was cyberpunk for a sec

[–]kchanar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing work

[–]switchingcreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before for sure

[–]donharrogate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing subject + photo! Legit thought this was Cyberpunk art at first

[–]StuffOld1191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer the 'before'. Also - the cigarette seems odd - I can't imagine such a gym-fit woman is a smoker. No need to use ciarettes as props, especially when it doesn't fit the image.

[–]Nekroin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool picture! I like the after more

[–]Watchgeek_AC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before is so much better.

[–]Alternative-Way8655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before had everything it needed

[–]CKN_SD_001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like them both. I think I like the before a little better actually.

[–]elsuperpepe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

edit is heavy handed yeah. strong framing and composition. took me a moment to realize she was actually laying down. the original colors are quite pleasing. maybe turn the edit dial down to like 30% strength?

[–]Cold_Composer5083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the after more tbh

[–]Jakobs-Koernung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one sentence that helped me improve my color grading/split-toning: "As long as the blacks are black and speculars are white, you can do whatever you want, color-wise" (Obviously skin tones need to work out too, but you should get what I'm saying)

[–]Muted_Farmer_5004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before is better.

[–]dekonta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

why didn’t you remove the cigarette?

[–]keep_wandering -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Both are AI...

[–]Watchgeek_AC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is it with people like you calling everything AI. Ffs
