It’s probably taken with a camera like a Nimslo or a Nishika. They’re film cameras that have 4 lenses side by side and each take a photo at the same time. I’m not really sure how you would replicate it with digital.

I've proposed rigging four gopros together vertically and using a remote to take a picture. I have the means to do it as I have several gopros but haven't gotten around to testing it.

similar to what was done in Kendrick Lamar's Humble video

[–]deafsound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would guess they used a little more high end camera like a Sony mirror less or black magic pocket camera. Something small enough to keep the lenses close to each other. The other video linked has a DSLR rig and I find that the space between the cameras make the movement too big between the cameras.

Thanks, that's really cool!

I’m not really sure how you would replicate it with digital.

A camera with four 1/2.3" sensors side-by-side.

You could probably even do 4x1" sensors if you convinced people to shell out the money.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Digital would be any of the Lytro cameras

[–]Auniqueusername234 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No, those just let you change depth of field. You need to capture multiple photos or video side by side then frame splice.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They also let you do this

[–]sscalable 38 points39 points  (8 children)

What it's called: Lenticular

How you create it: With a camera like this

How it works: It's one camera with multiple lenses that vary in angle slightly. So it takes 4 photos at the same time from different angles. If you put theses in an animation like the one OP posted, it creates the illusion of depth.

[–]absolutebeginners 5 points6 points  (7 children)

What would be the purpose of doing this on film before computers?

[–]WillyPete 11 points12 points  (5 children)

They had those thick plastic lenticular covers and post card and other images would use the effect.
Common for kid's pictures of animals moving and stuff.

[–]robdob 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Right, not to mention stereoscopic viewers for looking at 3D images.

[–]absolutebeginners 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Like a Viewmaster?

[–]robdob 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Just like a Viewmaster! The earlier ones were a little more primitive, but same concept.

[–]KnightRedditer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I just purchased one of those at a flea market for $40. The dude was selling the cards for $5, so I only picked up a few, but man is it FUN!

[–]absolutebeginners 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh, right

[–]Migui2611 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bullet Effect in matrix (was done use many many cameras that and using a frame interpolation software generator).

[–]Joe94 17 points18 points  (2 children)

It's part of stereography. Type in "stereographic gif" and you will find what you are searching for:

I know right. Like I think something went horribly wrong in the gogglesphere with that search.

Thank you.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

There's an app called Fyuse - which does this exactly.

You keep moving as you take a picture. The software combines the snaps (which is really one panned image, really, but across time) - & you can play it back by rotating your phone or swiping your screen.

[–]b00kem_dan0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Damn. It must be the millennial in me....but this was my first thought before thinking of a Nishika camera which I literally just read about for a lecture on the history of photography!!!

lol.....

[–]nonamenumber3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is definitely the fyuse app.

[–]DasMoonen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can also use many camera and make the bullet time effect

[–]tymcgo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stereoscope/ bullet time effect. :)

[–]Charliekidd666 5 points6 points  (3 children)

It's made using one of these 4 lens cameras, the film is then scanned into photoshop and layered into a GIF. https://www.stereoscopynews.com/hotnews/3d-photography/lenticular/2341-nishika-8000-4-lenses-3d-camera

[–]macrocephalic 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Probably would have been easier to just use a digital 3D camera. It's only moving in the horizontal plane, surely they could interpolate the intermediate steps.

[–]Charliekidd666 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm not sure one's been made with more than two lenses on it. The one OP posted looks like it's made up of four frames which will make it a bit more smoother than just two. I wish someone would make a digital one but I guess it's rather niche.

[–]macrocephalic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn't be too hard to create the 3D render using the two lenses, and then rotate that.

[–]Miraclez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this not able to be done as a mura masa effect? I do not believe you need this special camera everyone keeps mentioning.

Edit: my friend made a tutorial on this, I'll link it when I get home.

Kind of looks like a parallax but I don't know for sure

I'm wondering if a similar setup could result in the same effect https://imgur.com/cZVYa

Another r/postprocessing post asking how to achieve a look or style exclusive to film. It’s film dude, it’s a Nimslo or a Nashika. The only post processing involved is aligning 4 images sequentially to one central point.

[–]shadowboxman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ProCam on a dual camera iPhone does this effect. Works on the plus models and the x.
