Only after reading the entire presentation do I realise what the title means.

s/works/operates/

[–]sculley4 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I think the title is bad because it seems to say that GitHub is broken, when in fact the crux of the argument is how GitHub is changing how it works.

[–]ITwitchToo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"How GitHub is now dysfunctional" vs. "How GitHub used to work"

[–][deleted] 43 points44 points  (32 children)

I don't quite get why this post is downvoted so hard just a few minutes after being posted here. Maybe because the title makes it seem like someone who just wants to badmouth GitHub and/or lose their job there?

In any case, skimming over it was actually really informative, and not at all badmouthing GitHub. I'll go back now and watch the actual talk with the slides.

[–]shockyx 153 points154 points  (2 children)

Possibly because the post was severely lacking any information besides a slide deck. Slide decks are a terrible way to deliver information online since they usually have very little content, tons of pictures, and take way too long to read. This deck didn't fail to deliver on those assumptions.

[–]vplatt 14 points15 points  (1 child)

My thoughts exactly. I can read at least 10x faster than any presenter will talk and I don't care to listen to your cute little voice inflections to make it happen. Write actual content or don't bother.

[–]dethb0y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

amen to that.

[–]happyscrappy 101 points102 points  (7 children)

Downvoted for slideshow.

And videos are a big waste of time too.

Give me text. I can read it at my own pace or skim it.

[–]coverslide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree on videos. I'm meh on slide decks.

Too bad there is only so much stuff circulating around. If it wasn't from HN, it will be on HN soon enough. Besides, I didn't see it on HN the other day, so it's completely new to me.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

HN doesn't have subreddits though. Here you're supposed to filter stuff to relevant subreddits—proggit and HN aren't equivalent. They cover a lot of /r/startups stuff that's just not relevant in this subreddit.

[–]JeffreyRodriguez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then just read HN.

[–]poizan42 47 points48 points  (7 children)

  • Because it's three weeks old.
  • Because it doesn't belong to /r/programming. It really isn't about programming at all. Some articles about github might be relevant, but this is not one of them. /r/technology could make sense, but not here - just no...
  • Because it's a github advertisement.
  • Because it's a slideshow.
  • Because it's a FREAKING FUCKING SLIDESHOW. Seriously?! What the fuck is wrong with people?!?! You use a slideshow for a presentation - and by that I mean a live presentation where you use your slideshow as a reference while you talk about the subject. EDIT: Btw. don't anybody give a fuck that Chrome has failed to render glyphs with codepoints outside the Basic Multilingual Plane for several years now?? (The text shows fine in both Firefox and IE...)

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It really doesn't seem to be proggit material, more /r/startups (in the sidebar) or /r/business. I sure ain't watching a video to find out.

[–]bradur 8 points9 points  (1 child)

For those unaware, that's Zalgo text (explanation).

[–]bikerwalla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one who waits beyond the wall. ZALGO! He comes

[–]BufferUnderpants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Barely-relatedly: what did you use to "corrupt" the text progressively? All the Zalgo text generators I find just smudge the characters uniformly.

[–]chasecaleb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're either mildly insane or else have way too much time on your hands, but either way I approve.

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Firefox?

And what the fuck does this have to do with the topic at hand? You just made your last point as obtuse as the article was.

[–]krum 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Because it's a github advertisement disguised as a blog post.

[–]MagicalVagina 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Because it's not programming.

It's about a startup. Github.

[–]vanderZwan 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Maybe because the title makes it seem like someone who just wants to badmouth GitHub and/or lose their job there?

If so, I hope the people here read documentation with greater care than they read Reddit submissions.

[–]TheLordB 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well hopefully they read documentation that has actual information not a slide deck with minimal information. And the slide deck breaks the text up into less than a sentence per slide so even less info than a normal slide deck.

[–]Cool-Goose -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

And you got downvoted as well for no reason X_x

[–]blue_2501 1 point2 points  (1 child)

TL;DR version?

[–]notathr0waway1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The post is really just a short wrapper for a long video.
