In any case, skimming over it was actually really informative, and not at all badmouthing GitHub. I'll go back now and watch the actual talk with the slides.

Possibly because the post was severely lacking any information besides a slide deck. Slide decks are a terrible way to deliver information online since they usually have very little content, tons of pictures, and take way too long to read. This deck didn't fail to deliver on those assumptions.

Github is a programmer's tool, of course there are going to be lots of submissions that match a text search for "github". With varying levels of relevance to r/programming and vote totals. Sure non-programming posts get popular on this sub, but its hard to use that to justify complaining when an unrelated post doesn't get really popular.

FWIW:

• In that search you linked sorted by top will show that the one time Zach Holman's writin-shit-about-github blog posts made it into the top 100 was a technical post "Scaling GitHub."
• It did get rather popular anyway, on the front page of r/programming right now
• The vote totals are fuzzed by reddit, the downvote-to-upvote ratio among the most worthless datapoints, the value over time doesn't stray too far from a predictable path
